Happy weekend, friends! How was your week? My son is in town so I’m having fun visiting with him. He and his friend are driving from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon and it’s so fun to have them stay with us! Today I am sharing some pretty summer and Father’s Day ideas. I hope you enjoy them!

Summer Rainbow Pallet Mantel

It’s the first week of summer at our house and to celebrate I changed up our mantel with a summery rainbow theme! I made this flower display mantel pallet lat year and stored it outside so now it has a more weathered look which I actually love! I pulled out the pallet and added some yellow, pink and orange flowers to match our rainbow rug!

Use Things You Have

It’s been a busy couple of weeks with the end of school, graduations and memorial day. So I decided to use what I already had! As I mentioned, I brought out the upcycled pallet, added some vintage bottles that I already had and went through my extra craft supplies to find some rainbow flowers. I kept the rainbow butterfly paper banner that I had up on my spring mantel. I think it is great for summer too!

Three Different Coordinating Centerpieces

I wanted to create a little centerpiece for our family room table to coordinate with our summer mantel. An elevated the vignette with a little wood pedestal that I have had for a few years. I love peony season and these fresh peonies make me so happy! I experimented with this vignette. Which do you like better?

The first centerpiece I created was with the peonies, this yummy Trader Joe’s candle and a colander full of lemons.

The second idea also used the peonies and candle but I switched out the colander of lemons for a little sign I made with my American Crafts paper line.

The third centerpiece I switched out the sign for my favorite big disco ball! I love the way it sparkles and creates prisms in the light. It’s so happy! So let me know which centerpiece looks best with my Summer pallet rainbow mantel!

Here are a few summer mantels that I have created and loved over the past few years!

Flower Pallet Display Mantel

Here’s my flower display pallet from last year. I added a couple plant themed signs. I love how it uses the vertical space and draws your eye upwards.

Boho Cottage Summer Mantel

This idea is so easy to create! We had just finished our NEW planked electric fireplace and I wanted to showcase it. So I kept things very simple. I added my favorite scallop mirror and some fresh flowers in bud vases. I elevated some of the vases on pedestals. Then I added in a big tropical fern and some flowers. I think it looks fresh and simple.

Summer Flower Market Mantel

This mantel is still one of my very favorites. I went with a flower market theme. Luckily I had collected flower market themed items for a few years. So I gathered the baskets, pots, signs and faux flowers together and created this mantel.

Bee Kind Summer Beaded Beehive Wreath

I love seeing the bees in our yard during summer. I know that they are pollinating the plants and flowers so they bloom! I’ve been really fascinated with beehives, also called skepts, this year. I think beehives are the perfect theme for summer! I’ve made a few different sized beehives out of old pots and paper containers this year. I thought It would be fun to create a summer wreath with a beehive theme!

Make Beehives Out of Old Coffee Pods

As I was creating the beehives for this wreath I searched around for a very small container that I could wrap in twine that is beehive shaped. I discovered that coffee and hot chocolate pods are the perfect size and shape! I love recycling things to use as I craft.

How Do You Make a Twine Beehive?

I shared the process of making the beehives in my post about our backyard with DIY Beehive Instructions. So head over there if you want more detailed instructions. But basically you flip the pod over so the bigger size is down. Now add a line of hot glue to the base of the pod and wrap it with twine. Then continue wrapping the pod and glueing it as you go until you get to the top of the pod. Now wrap it along the top, cut the end and glue the end into the center of the circle you have created. To get a more rounded look at the top I folded up half a sheet of paper towel and taped it to the top of the pod.

Supplies to Make a Beaded Beehive Wreath

Here are the supplies needed to create this pretty summer wreath. I have links to the supplies to make it even easier!

• 14-inch Beaded Wreath Form
• Twine
• Coffee or Hot Chocolate Pods (I figure you can find these and don’t need links LOL)
• Greenery (I used 1 bunch of fern leaves)
• Yellow Flowers
• Pink Flowers
• Scrapbook Paper (I used paper from my new Pebbles Peaceful Heart line – now in JoAnn Stores!)
• Thicker Letters to Spell Out Bee Kind (I used the thicker letters from my Peaceful Heart line)
• Heart Embellishment (this is also from my Peaceful Heart line – at JoAnn Stores)
• Ribbon

How to Make a Summer Beaded Beehive Wreath

Here are the easy instructions on how to make this summer beaded wreath in under an hour!

Make Beehives

Wrap coffee pods with twine, Check out my Beehive Outdoor Post for more detailed instructions on how to do this.

Cut Fern Leaves Apart

Take the fern bundle and use heavy scissors or wire cutters to cut the leaves apart.

Glue Fern Leaves to Beaded Wreath Form

Take 5-6 fern leaves and glue them to one side of the wreath form, the ends will be at the center of the wreath, with the leaves spread outward. Glue the ends of the leaves to the center of the beaded wreath. Then glue the leaves along the beads so the leaves fan out along the wreath. Use as much glue as you need to get them to hold. Do this on both sides of the wreath.

Glue the Beehives onto the Wreath Form

Now place the beehives where you want them to go on the wreath. Use glue to glue them onto the wreath. I centered the beehives on the wreach so the base of the beehive was in the center of the beads to give it more stability.

Use Ferns to Secure Beehives

The beehives are pretty heavy so I also glued the beehive to the fern leaves to give it a little more stability. You can also place flowers under the beehives to give them more stability and help them stay centered. Use a lot of glue. You can also flip the wreath over and glue from the back to get everything to stay.

Add Flowers

Now fill in the wreath with your flowers. You can use the bigger flowers to attach them to the beehives and to the ferns and beads so that everything is secure.

Make Banner

Since my wreath form was 14 inches wide at the biggest point, I flipped my paper sideways to cut the banner wider than 12 inches. I cut the paper into a banner with the widest point at the middle – 3 inches high. Then trimmed the edges square. I placed the banner at the top of the wreath where it was 10 inches in diameter and folded the edges over the beads. But first I added the thickers and heart brad.

Add BEE KIND Thickers and Heart Brad

Then I measured the middle of the banner and added the heart brad. I then added the BEE on the left side of the brad and the KIND on the other side.

Attach Banner to Wreath

Then I put the banner at the top third of my wreath, folded the edges over the beads and glued both side of the banner to the beads on both sides of the wreath so the banner was taught across the wreath.

Add Ribbon

I added some happy yellow ribbon to the top of the wreath, tied it in a knot and hung it up! So Simple!

Hang It Up

Now you can hang it up on your mantel, on a wall or on your front door! I am going to hang it on my front door this week. I plan on creating a Bee-Themed Summer Porch. So stop by in a few days to see how it turns out!

Three Free Vintage Peony Prints

Raise your hand if you love peonies!! I sure do! So when I was deciding how to decorate our #1891AvenuesCottage fireplace for summer I immediately knew I wanted to showcase my favorite flower!

I’m on a botanical kick lately! Last week I created a botanical shelf display in our family. I created SIX botanical and butterfly printables and it was so fun to layer them all up in that room.

This week I am sharing THREE free peony botanical images.

Peony Summer Mantel

I printed the peony images in three different sizes. But you can decide what size you want to print off for your space. The pink pink peony is framed in a 16×20 frame, the purple peony in an 11×14 frame and the peony book plate printable in an 8×10 frame. I also put some faux peonies in a vase at the base of the fireplace. I love seeing all of the peony goodness in one place!

How Do I Print in Large Scale?

Printing in large sizes is easier than you might think! I sent the prints over to my local Walgreens and had them printed out THE SAME DAY! You might think that printing poster-sized prints is expensive, but I printed out BOTH the pink and purple peony 16×20 sizes, plus the smaller images for under $15. It’s super easy to do.

Finding Vintage Botanical Images

I recently discovered a really cool resource for vintage botanical and animal drawings and images. It’s the Biodiversity Heritage Library and Raw Pixel. There are seriously millions of beautiful images preserved that you can access and print off. You might need to do a little cleaning up of the images to make them really pop out. I love pink so these botanical prints are really fun!

Print These Peony Prints Off in Any Size

These images are made to be printed in almost any size. From 20×30 down to 4×6 sizes. You can even down load them and create cards. The possibilities are endless! I hope you enjoy them as much as I have!

Butterfly Paper Specimen Art and Mantel

I am LOVING butterflies and moths this year for summer! There’s something so magical about the colors and the idea of flying in the summer skies. I decided to create a summer Butterfly-theme mantel for our family room!

Butterfly Summer Mantel

I think butterflies and moths are the perfect theme for a summer mantel. I kept it pretty simple by adding three main elements on the mantel and then a sign and fresh plants on the hearth, plus a couple colorful boho garlands!

Make Butterfly Paper Specimen Art

I’ve been creating specimen art for over 10 years. I had my bat specimen art featured in Better Homes and Gardens back in the day, which was fun! I haven’t created specimen art for awhile and I decided that it was time it made a comeback!

Choose Colorful Paper

I used my new Pebbles Reaching Out papers to create this specimen art! I am SUPER excited that the line is being sold online and in person at JoAnn Stores! This line is SO usable and fun. It’s full of bright colors, pretty icons and the sweetest embellishments. For this project I picked seven papers from my smaller paper pad.

Use a Die Cut to Create Paper Butterflies

I love using die cuts. It’s an easy way to cut out small things without having to hook up to a computer and makes crafting on the go easy! Sizzix’s Vagabond machine. Cut each sheet into four pieces, laid the smaller moth shape on top of the paper with the ridges down and then ran it through the machine. I had all four pieces done in one swipe! I used Sizzix’s Butterfly Dies.

Line a Frame with Paper

I decided to use black cardstock to make my butterflies/moths really POP! I cut out paper in the shape of the frame insert and then put the paper inside of the frame (without the glass). My frame was longer in length than my 12×12 paper so I had to piece a little at the top and bottom but once you get the butterflies on you can’t see the seams.

Measure Where to Place the Butterflies

The measurements on this will depend on the size frame you use. You want to make the center of each butterfly. I put 1 inch around the sides of the butterflies for open space. Then I marked 2.5 inches between each butterfly. This leaves about .5 inch of open space between the butterflies because the die cut butterflies are 1.5 inches in width and I fold the wings up as well. You can also eyeball it too.

Fold the Butterfly Wings Up

I folded the wings up on the butterflies to make it seem like they are flying. You can either fold them in half, or I used a straight edge to fold one side and then left the middle flat, folding the other side up. This looks more realistic.

Glue Each Butterfly on The Grid

Once you have marked the grid, glue each butterfly onto the paper. I used a pattern by laying each pattern butterfly in a row lengthwise and then repeated the pattern as I filled in the grid.

Display Your Butterfly Specimen Art

I laid my specimen art on my mantel along with my other items but you can also hang it on a wall or display it on a shelf!

Frame Butterfly Wallpaper

Take a poster-sized frame that I had on hand and framed a section of wallpaper that I had leftover from my new bathroom I just wallpapered. The butterfly wallpaper is from Spoonflower and I absolutely love it! I love seeing it on my mantel along with my butterfly specimen art and a beautiful Lindsay Letters frame my sister Wendy Vonsosen Photography gave me for Christmas last year!

Bright and Simple Summer Mantel Makeover Using What You Have

I have been so busy with our remodel and projects related to that I didn’t have time to get new things for my summer mantel. And that’s ok! I love using things I already have in new ways!

Flower Market Summer Mantel and Decorating Ideas

FIVE easy ways to bring the feeling of Summer into YOUR home!

Decorate a Shelf or Mantel for Summer

I love decorating my mantel for the different holidays and seasons. Of course I wanted to decorate for Summer. I found a few easy ways to decorate our mantel with a Flower Market theme!

A Big Summer Sign

I found this enamel sign at JoAnn Stores. It has an enamel look which I love. I also loved that it was on sale for 70% off – so it was a great deal. If you can’t find a big sign that you love, you can always make a GIANT DIY Sign. I have a tutorial on my site. I love making GIANT signs.

Plant Flowers in Galvanized Pots

Plant real or “faux” flowers in big pots. I also found these galvanized pots at JoAnn Stores. They were also 70% off. But almost any store has galvanized pots, including Walmart. If you can’y find galvanized pots you like, you can also DIY some pots by using silver spray paint and then rubbing a little stain over the top to make them look galvanized.

Add A Summer Pillow

Bring the summer theme into your home with a cute pillow. This is a pillow I also found at JoAnn Stores. But you can DIY this pillow with a plain pillow cover and then either stencil a pattern or saying on with fabric paint, or you can print off the saying on fabric transfer vinyl and IRON it on!

Add a Smaller Flower Sign

Carry the flower idea through with a smaller sign that goes with the larger one. The idea is the same with this idea as the GIANT sign. You can paint the frame with black paint and then use white vinyl to create the saying. You can also paint the saying by printing off the vinyl and using it as a stencil! Stencil Sign Tutorial.

Stencil Dollar Store Crates

I added some faux and real plants to some crates I found at the dollar store a few years ago. You can also find crates like these in the dollar spot section at Target. JoAnn Stores also has crates like these that you can stencil and JoAnn Stores has stencils too. You can also use “thicker” scrapbook letters to stencil – here’s a tutorial to do that — DIY Stencil Crate.

I am so happy with our new Flower Market mantel! I am also going to add a few paper banners under the mantel for some more color! You can make an easy Burlap and Paper banner in just a few minutes. I have the Burlap and Paper Banner Tutorial on my site!

Decorate a Shelf for Summer instead of a Mantel

No worries if you don’t have a mantel in your home! You can use these same ideas to decorate a shelf or table! I created a nook in my kitchen with shelves and this is an area I love to decorate for the different seasons and holidays too! DIY Burlpap and Paper Banner.

And another project was this Hello Wood Art! I used paper from my new My Bright Life line. It’s so easy to make, I thought I would share it with you!

Hello Wood Art Tutorial

Supplies:

Wood Sign (from The Wood Connection)

Paper (I used paper from my new My Bright Life line)

Glue

Hot glue

Paint

Directions:

Paint the frame

Use whatever paint you want to paint the plank frame and let it dry

Trace the word

Trace the wood word onto the backside of your craft paper and cut it out

Glue the paper to the wood word

Use craft glue to attach the scrapbook paper onto the wood sign

Glue the wood word to the sign

Use hot glue or wood glue to attach the wood word onto the middle of the wood sign

So easy!

You can hang the sign on the wall or put it on a shelf or on your mantel!

I am so excited about my new My Bright Life line!! It’s funn of bright and happy colors and images. including vintage pyrex, cake plates, even LAMAS!!

Simple Summer Mantel using found items in your home. The older I get the more I appreciate the idea of a simple life. I love finding joy in small things. As I have been decorating our new home I found things around the house that are meaningful and I made a little Summer mantlescape with them.

In the new house there isn’t much wall space, so I had the mirror from my living room at the cottage sitting in a storage room.

I brought it upstairs and used it on the mantel. I love the way the mirror reflects light and makes the room seem brighter.

Another item that I used in the mantel is this whale painting that Hannah created the other day. She wasn’t happy with the way it turned but but I love it. I found it on the floor of her bedroom about to be thrown away. Can you believe that?? I love displaying it and I am so proud that she created it. I considered framing it and displaying it that way but I decided to put it on a little wood stool I have and display it that way.

The sailboats are something that I couldn’t pass up when they went on clearance at Target. I had them in our mudroom, but as I was scavenging around the house I thought they would be perfect on the mantel for Summer.

I took a pitcher from the pantry and put some fresh flowers in it. I also found a plant from Hannah’s room and added it to the mantel to add a little height. The candlesticks are from my mom’s house and were in my dining room at the cottage. The marquee was in the family room at the cottage.

The mantel is simple and it really represents this new phase of our lives in our home – simplicity and serenity. I love that the items are meaningful to me and also it was free to create!

I finally got around to taking my Spring Mantel down. I loved it, but I wanted something new. I took the vintage door I used for my Spring Mantel and flipped it to the other side to decorate my Summer Mantel. Super easy!!

And I am loving the {Styled By Tori} DIY jewelry line. I thought it would be fun to frame some of the beautiful brooches and hang them on my vintage door. I also wrapped some burlap around a couple of blue canning jars and pinned a brooch on each. I am planning on putting fresh flowers in the jars each week during the summer. I love fresh flowers!!

I love the brooches in Tori’s {Styled By Tori} line because they are  all so unique and beautiful, but they are also so affordable!! Last summer when we went to London I spent HOURS scouring the antique markets for vintage brooches — and let me tell you, they are expensive. As they should be. But if you are looking for the same kind of look at a fraction of the price, the {Styled By Tori} brooches are awesome. And this would also be a great idea if you have some family heirloom brooches that you wanted to showcase.

Here’s how I made the framed brooches:

• I used frames from Cut It Out Frames. These are the same frames I used in my Family Gallery Wall. I love the scrolly shapes!!

• I painted the frames and then sanded them down and applied some scrapbooking dye to the sides to make them look old. I just rubbed the ink pad all around the edges and wiped off the excess.

• I wrapped the inside cardboard with brown material and then wrapped that in burlap (the burlap’s open weave made it so that I needed to use something underneath).

• Then I put the fabric-wrapped cardboard inside of the frame.

• Then I pinned the brooches on the burlap. Some of the brooches come with a pin on the back, and some are made to be pendants and they have a ring on the back. If the brooch had a ring on the back, I pinned a plain pin to the burlap and pulled it through the loop, attaching it to the other side of the burlap. That way I can easily take the brooches off and make jewelry with them later without ruining them!

• I hung the frames up on my vintage door with Command Picture Hanging Strips. I love those strips!!

I accessorized the mantel with an oxidized “H” I found at Hobby Lobby (50% off!!), a starfish and some lanterns I use year-round.

I really love my new Beachy/Vintage Mantel!!
