Farmhouse Decor with a Colorful Twist
When we moved into our home three years ago I evaluated what really makes e happy and decided that it’s COLOR! I love the farmhouse/cottage style but I also love bright, happy colors. I think it’s possible to have a simple cottage-style home with a colorful twist.
So now when I think of DIY ideas that I want to make I really try to bring COLOR into the equation because it must makes me happy and that is who I am.
Summer is the Perfect Time to Decorate with COLOR
For Summer especially I think it’s fun to decorate with bright hues. This year I brought color into our home with some simple DIY projects — on our front porch, in our family room and mantel plus our back porch and yard!
Easy Ways to Bringing Color onto Your Front Porch
Summer Succulent Farmhouse Wreath
To bring color to our porch, I created a farmhouse wreath with a colorful twist using bright flowers and papers from my new Chasing Adventures line that is at JoAnn Stores. The summer vibe is continued with cute faux succulents that I added to the wreath. You can find out how to make the wreath here — Summer Succulent Farmhouse Wreath.
Giant HOME DIY Wood Sign
One of the ways I brought color and a farmhouse/cottage feeling to our porch was through this easy giant sign. I love making GIANT signs. GIANT signs are so easy to create since I use inexpensive pine shelving. I spray painted some simple letters and added a wreath for the “O” in HOME. You can find out how to make this sign here — GIANT Farmhouse Home Sign.
Stenciled Flower Crates
I love fresh flowers for Summer. Flowers are an awesome way to bring nature into your home or porch PLUS I love the colors. Stenciling crates is easy. All you do is create vinyl stencils using your craft cutting machine.
If you don’t have a craft cutting machine you can buy stencils at your craft store. And sometimes the dollar store has stencils too. Another idea is to use scrapbook letters to create stencils! You can find out how to do this here — Stenciled Herb Garden Crates.
Layer Porch Rugs
One final way to bring color to your front door or porch is layering rugs. I do this all the time. Find two rugs that coordinate with each other and layer them together to create interest and textures!
Bringing Color into Your Family Room
Create a Colorful Summer Mantel
Just because I love color doesn’t mean that I don’t love a farmhouse/cottage style as well. It’s easy to create a very cottage-y mantel but add color with flowers. The enamel sign, pillow, and signs at JoAnn stores when they were all 70% off (I love a good deal). I used mostly faux flowers which makes it super easy and I love that I can use them next year too! You can find the whole mantel here — Flower Garden Mantel.
Add Fresh Flowers
I love fresh flowers — especially at Summertime. I usually have fresh flowers in this milk pitcher and I switch them out each week. Such an easy way to bring color into any room. And you can use grocery store flowers! These are from Trader Joes.
Rugs and Pillows are a Easy Way to Add Color
I love rugs and pillows. We have a few different rugs for our family room. For example, we have an off-white shag rug that I used a Christmas and Valentine’s Day because it’s neutral. But for Summer I got my HOT PINK rug back out and I LOVE it!! I have some matching hot pink pillows and every time I walk into that room the color makes me smile. For storage, I just roll the rugs up and store them upright!
Bringing Color to Your Back Porch or Sun Room
We are lucky to have a back porch. It’s a really fun room to decorate. The room is enclosed on three of the four sides, so we are able to use it most of the year!! A few years ago I created a little napping space with a day bed and pillows — Make an Outdoor Room. This year I added a new rug, some bright faux and real flowers and a GIANT solar lantern chandelier!! It really makes the back porch POP!!
