How to make a DIY recirculating fountain out of a pot

This is a project I did for my home a few years ago.  I love the sound of water and I wanted to create a fountain so I could hear the sound of falling water in my home! I added a colorful pot and create a recirculating fountain to our home.

This is a  recirculating fountain idea that is easy to create AND really cost efficient!!

DIY Recirculation Fountain. Create a soothing fountain for your yard with just a few simple items from the hardware store. Make a soothing recirculating fountain for your home this summer!

I saw  a great tutorial on The Hip House Girl a few years ago and was inspired to create a DIY fountain you can make with a pot!

You can put it in your front yard, patio or side yard!!

It took a few revisions but it turned out to be an amazing project for our yard and one that would work for ANY home!

DIY Recirculating Ceramic Pot Fountain

DIY Recirculation Fountain. Create a soothing fountain for your yard with just a few simple items from the hardware store. Make a soothing recirculating fountain for your home this summer!

Online Supply List:

  • Ceramic pot.
  • 5-gallon bucket.
  • Aluminum L-brackets
  • Metal screen material
  • Submersible pump, hose and if you want — an attachment for fountain spray.
  • Outdoor plug with GFCI

Here’s a printable sketch and description of what I did (click on the link for more information):

DIY Recirculation Fountain. Create a soothing fountain for your yard with just a few simple items from the hardware store. Make a soothing recirculating fountain for your home this summer!

Here’s what you do to create a DIY Recirculating Fountain:

  • Dig a hole to bury a 5-gallon bucket in your yard.
DIY Recirculation Fountain. Create a soothing fountain for your yard with just a few simple items from the hardware store. Make a soothing recirculating fountain for your home this summer!

  • Cut aluminum L-brackets  to fit over the bucket (these will carry the weight of your pot and water for the fountain).

  • Use wire cutters to make a square of wire mesh material to fit over the pot with a hole in the middle for the pump hose to go through. I also covered the mesh with some smaller window screen material to keep debris from falling inside of the bucket.

  • Put the pump on the bottom of the bucket. I rested the pump on a plastic tupperware container filled with rocks. This keeps the debris that is collected at the bottom of the pot from getting in the pump.

  • Run the tubing up through the mesh and through the ceramic pot above and attach it to the Nozzle kit to the top. Use rocks to hold the tubing in place at the bottom of the pot. I also ran the tubing through a length of PVC pipe to keep it straight. I painted the PVC pipe black to match the tubing. More details on this in the printable sketch.

  • I had to experiment to find the right kind of caulk to use for this project. You need silicone caulk that is made to withstand water. Apply the caulk and allow it to dry according to the directions before you get it wet.

  • Then add water, add power and you are ready to go!!

A quick weekend project for YOUR home!

Be sure to see The Hip House Girl for her tutorial. And, Lowe’s also has a great tutorial on how to make a fountain with a pot on their Creative ideas website. This is a quick, weekend project that can bring you so much satisfaction! It’s perfect for a backyard project too!

This post is one of my great finds this week! Thank you, Thomas Ortiz. You’ve done an amazing job for me and the people who count on our favorite vapormax. Can you please create another more comprehensive resource on RECIRCULATING? I would be very delighted.

I love the final outcome of your guys’ fountain! It does seem pretty easy to do so I might see about doing that come next year or even have it as a winter project. Now what I might do is buy some and make some, that way I would have a good variety of fountains in my yard. I do like how you outlined the whole process and provided pictures with each step along the way.

Love this idea…. just what I’m looking for! What size pump did you buy, and could you give me the approximate cost of the total project? Like you, I don’t want something really expensive, and I do want something recirculating, as water is very expensive here.

Thank you for the great pattern for out door water fountains. I have one in my front yard. I used a faux grey-taupe pot , a friend from my husband’s work welded the copper fountain where the water comes out and into the pot. Our neighbor had one and she let me copy the design from hers. We made ours a little different. We get cold weather here so if a person was to make your design they would have to get a frost /freeze ceramic pot. Costcos carries them here very reasonable. The only thing you would have to do is get a plumbers putty and plug drain hole.

My pot ( resin) has no bottom hole, it has a design and looks nice, not cheap looking.

My daughter just bought a new home and outside her formal lv rm window they put in one of those expensive rocks that water bubbles out and goes into a resevoir pan 🙂 The rock type I have always dreamed for my front yard. I could not believe it when she told me her and hubby moved it into the spot. they do heavy projects. Then the joke was on me , it was a faux rock fountain and it was so real you would never known even when you touch it. It was beautiful. I really lilke your design, thank you for sharing. You are going to make many readers very excited to make this project for their Curb Appeal 🙂

Did my husband and boys put you up to this? Just this weekend I received the hard sell on an outdoor fountain, but I put the hammer down on it. But THIS pot/fountain I would approve of! It doesn’t steal too much space from our already small backyard and can be done quickly and with little investment. I love the pot!! Thanks for the idea!! I’d definitely use the gift card to buy the materials for that exact fountain!!!

Looks awesome! I love how you drew up the diagram in a much more readable format than my chicken scratch, haha. Let me know how it works over time… we actually found that the bucket started to buckle a bit under the weight so we had to do some readjusting. I love the sound they make… beautiful work!
