Handmade Keychains are a Fun Craft to Make with Teens
I am always looking for fun crafts to make with my kids, especially as they’ve gotten older. This is one that my daughter loved to make. It’s fun because there are so many different kinds and shapes of keychains that you can make. I love seeing her using her imagination!
Supplies to Make Boho Beaded Keychains
There are so many different shapes and configurations of beaded keychains! I bought a few different supplies and used some things I already had. Here are the things we used to make these different keychain ideas:
- Beads (I used several different sizes of round beads as well as a geometric large bead and also a long cylindrical bead shape)
- Twine (you can use regular twine or string. I also used leather twine)
- Ribbon (instead of twine, consider using ribbon. You can also add ribbon as bows onto keychains)
- Keychain Fobs (I used two different sizes of fobs. The fobs will have a mechanism that can be opened on one end which can be clipped to a bag. The other end has a closed ring that you use to tie your string or twine on and create the keychain)
Creating Boho Beaded Keychains
Tie your string or twine to the closed ring on the keychain fob. Then string the beads you want to use on the string. Loop the bottom of the string around a bead, bell or create a tassel a the bottom of the keychain and loop the string back up to the top of the keychain and tie a knot.
How to Create a Tassel
A tassel is a cute way to end your beaded keychain. Simply string the beads through the string you are using. Cut 5- 6 pieces of string or ribbon that is twice as long as the length of tassel you want to create. Lay the strings across the string at the bottom of the last bead, then loop the string through the pile of strings and either tie a knot there or thread the string back up through the beads to the keyfob and tie it off.
Then fold the strings over so they are all the same length and use another piece of string or ribbon to wrap around the loop at the top of the tassel and tie it off. Trim the string to the length of the rest of the tassels.
Make a Round Keychain
To create a round beaded keychain, Decide how many beads you want to use total on the keychain. Then thread half of those beads and then thread the closed loop of the keyfob on the string and thread the remaining beads. This puts the keyfob in the middle of the keychain. Make a knot at the last bead. Use superglue to hold the knot well. Once the superglue dries, cut the strings in the knot very short. Then make a tassel where the knot is to cover it up. Do the same thing to create a tassel as above. Cut 6-8 pieces of ribbon or twine twice as long as you want the tassel to be. Loop the strings over the top of the knot and down to join at the bottom. Take another piece of string or twine and wrap it around the base of the knot and tie it off. Trim the ends of the string the same length a the rest of the tassel strings.

How do you tie off the bells?
These are so cute! What a great idea!
Thank you!
Jen says
Hi! You can tie the bells off in a few different ways. I strung the string down through the beads, around the loop at the top of the bell and then up through the beads again and tie the two strings in a knot at the top of the chain. But you can also just tie the knot at the loop at the top of the bell too 🙂
