We’re having so much fun renovating our #1891avenuescottage in the heart of salt lake! We started on the main floor and updated the kitchen, adding planked statement walls to that room and bringing them over into the family room. We built a new fireplace to anchor the space. Behind the kitchen we divided a room to create a new pantry and laundry room. Then we headed downstairs to carve out a separate airbnb apartment with it’s own entrance. Now we are heading upstairs to work on the outdated bathrooms!

Small Bathrooms Require Imaginative Design

Historic California Home Remodel via Remodelista

Since our home is so old, the bathrooms are small. So I knew I needed to use my imagination and plan them out really well to make them as functional as possible! We are lucky that the biggest bedroom has it’s own bath which makes it the perfect choice for a master suite. Unlike newer built homes that have created space for a big master suite bathroom with a separate toilet room and his-and-hers-sinks, this bathroom doesn’t have the space for all of that.

Add Essential Amenities

The Well Nested Home via Southern Hospitality

As I was planning out the space I considered not having a tub. But as I was thinking it through I decided a tub seems essential for a master bathroom. So in adding a tub I will make the sacrifice of having a small vanity with only one sink. TO make up for this smaller vanity I am going to open a couple spaces in the walls and add some storage between the studs!

Shelves in between studs in a half wall via Domino

Since I’ve been researching my own between the studs storage ideas, I thought I would share some bathroom storage ideas that I love! Some use only the space in between the studs, while others were able to carve out deeper spaces by utilizing dead space behind the walls or in rooms behind.

Cottage Bathroom with Wall Shelving at Tidbits

An in-between-the-studs project doesn’t have to be big to make a big impact. This little niche is only a couple of feet tall but holds some essential items in this darling cottage bathroom remodel. Be sure to click over to see the whole room. It’s so pretty!!

Bathroom Storage Shelves at Not Just a Housewife

My friend Stacy created this beautiful wall niche in her basement bathroom! She carved out a little extra space from the laundry room behind it to make the shelves deeper. I love the space she built at the bottom of the shelves to hold a laundry hamper. Such a great DIY project!

Small Between The Studs Bathroom Niche trimmed with white molding and with floral wallpaper.

1905 Home Bathroom with In the Wall Storage at The Family Handyman

This is the perfect example of building a wall unit within the width of standard wall studs. Many of these ideas I’m sharing are several wall studs wide which is a little trickier to construct that building shelves that are one wall stud in width. If you are looking for the easiest way to create this project, this is the perfect example. I love the way the renovator used molding to trim the space out! The addition of pretty wallpaper against the white trim makes this wall niche functional and beautiful!

Between the Studs open shelves with bleu and white mosaic tile on the back.

Bathroom Remodel with Tiled Niche at Miranda Schroeder

Why not tile the back of the shelf niche? What a beautiful design statement. I love the way the tile ties the vanity into the design of the room without overwhelming it.

Above the bath niche with wood shelves at CTA Builds

A beautiful niche is cut created inside of the studs in this wall. I love the wood shelves and the way the nose of the shelves is wider than the opening, emphasizing the craftsmanship of the design.

Shiplap bathroom with open shelves built into the wall next to the shower.

Shiplap Bathroom Shelves at Joyful Derivative

This i s one of my favorite bathroom remodels. This bathroom also doesn’t have space for a separate toilet room. The home owner put in a smaller width shower and that gave room to build these beautiful shelves in the wall. I love how the shiplap continues inside the shelves and really ties this nook into the overall design of the bathroom.

Marble subway tile wall with built in white shelves built in between the studs at the end lf the tub.

Between the Stud Nook at Ivory Lane

I love the idea of creating useful shelves by a tub. It’s the perfect spot to hold all of the toiletries you need for a leisurely soak.

Bathroom Remodel with Built In Linen Closet Nook at Decoholic

This bathroom is a great example of thoughtful design. The shelves that were created within the studs are deeper by carving out dead space behind the wall.

Vintage bathroom remodel with mosaic black and white floor, subway tile surround in the shower and a large niche with three shelves.

Shower with Storage Niche at Espacio en Blanco

I love a shower niche! When designing a shower think big. Instead of a small niche with only one shelf, this remodel utilized a bigger space with three shelves by carving out space between the wall studs.

Beautiful bathroom remodel with steam shower and deep open shelving next to the shower.

Bathroom Remodel with Open Shelving at Home Stories A2Z

My friend Beth designed this bathroom. Be sure to check out all of the beautiful details she incorporated in her bathroom remodel. By making the shower a little bit less wide, she was able to carve out storage space that is easily accessible.

Make the bathtub a few inches shorter to make room for a row of open shelves for storage.

Small Storage Niche Next to a Bathtub at Katie Monkhouse Design

This little nook is only a few inches wide but think of how much storage they were able to carve out by making the tub enclosure a tiny bit smaller!

Beautiful marble bathroom remodel with a niche carved out behind the shower for shelves and a laundry hamper.

French Country Bathroom with Storage at French Country Cottage

I know this bathroom technically doesn’t have shelving between the studs. But I love the look of these shelves that were created by making the shower a little less wide. I also love the way the tile continues inside of the nook and really ties it into the design of the room!

Bathroom Renovation with asymmetrical nook at Sweeten

This room is an example of utilizing space at awkward angles. The bathroom we are going to renovate is full of angles like this and I love the way they opened up the space. Now instead of being a design detriment, the angles are what make this room more interesting!

Bathroom Remodel with shaped niche at The Zhush

This is one of my favorite bathrooms that has a wall niche. I love the shape of this niche. It really makes a statement in this room and adds a beautiful design element.

That’s so clever, creating a storage in the sides, right near the mirror. I’m definitely going to consult my husband if I can make alterations just like that.
