Neutral Sweater Pumpkins are Perfect for ANY Decor

One of my first projects I made when we moved into our historic 1891 cottage were these neutral pumpkins with lots of fabric. While we were moving we got rid of so much stuff. I went through my daughters’ donation bag and found some white sweaters that had a great texture. They were snagged in the middle, but the sleeves were perfect for this project! I had seen a sweater pumpkin made out of sweater sleeves from DIY Beautify but I thought it might be easier to cover foam pumpkins instead of filling the sleeves with beans

Use Dollar Store Foam Pumpkins to Make Fall Sweater Pumpkins

I love using Dollar Store pumpkins for fall. A couple of years ago I painted Dollar Store Pumpkins all kinds of bright colors to create a really bright and happy fall porch. I also created a bright and colorful fall mantel. This year I thought it would be fun to create a neutral, more textured pumpkin display.

Upcycle Items You Already Have Into New Fall Decor

I loved that I was able to use materials I already owned to create this project. I love upcycling supplies and turning them into something new. You can use items you already have and create something new! This project just takes a few supplies!

What Supplies Do You Need to Make Dollar Store Sweater Pumpkins?

The supplies you need to create Dollar Store Sweater Pumpkins:

Small Foam Pumpkins

Sweater Sleeves (I used thrifted sweaters)

Twine or Ribbon

Scissors

2 Small Rubber Bands per Pumpkin

Hot Glue and Glue Gun

How Do You Make Fall Sweater Pumpkins

It only takes a few minutes to create Fall Sweater Pumpkins!

Use scissors to cut a hole in the bottom of your foam pumpkins

Cut Sweater Sleeve

Cut the sleeve of your sweater. Determine how wide you need the sleeve to be to fit your pumpkin. You can put the pumpkin inside of the sleeve and cut the other end, leaving an extra 4 inches on the top of the pumpkin and an extra 2 inches on the bottom of the pumpkin.

Turn Sweater Sleeve Inside Out

Turn the sleeve inside out. You want to do this so that the seamed side will be inside the pumpkin, not visible.

Add a rubber band to one end of the sweater sleeve.

Hot Glue One End of the Sweater Sleeve

Put a good amount of hot glue inside the hole at the bottom of your pumpkin. Immediately push the end of the sweater sleeve with the rubber band into the opening and hold until the glue cools. I used the end of a pencil to do this so I didn’t burn my fingers.

Pull the Sweater Sleeve Over the Pumpkin

Gather the sweater material at the top of the pumpkin. Pull it very taut with your hand.

Tie the Other End of the Sweater Sleeve

Use the other rubber band and tie it to the top of the pumpkin, pulling the sweater material very tight as you wrap the rubber band around the top of the pumpkin

Wrap The Pumpkin Stem

Use the rest of the sweater sleeve material to create a stem. You can make your stem as long as you want. Wrap the twin or ribbon around the material. Start at the base of the pumpkin where the rubber band is. Tie an initial loop in a knot and then wrap the twine around the rubber band, covering it and continue up the rest of the material. Tie off the twine at the top.

Trim Left Over Sweater Material

Once you have the stem the length you want, use scissors to cut remaining sweater material.

What if You Want a Really Long Pumpkin Stem

On one of my pumpkins I created a long stem that kind of falls to the side. I created this look by taking a little extra sweater material and I rolled it into a cylinder shape. I tucked it into the middle of the fabric that was gathered at the top of the pumpkin. Then when I wrapped the twine around the pumpkin, I wrapped it around the remaining material as I did with the other pumpkins, but at the center was the rolled material. Then once I got past the remaining sweater material, I continued wrapping it just around the rolled sweater material. The stem gets skinnier as you wrap but I love the way it mirrors the way actual pumpkin stems get skinnier as they get past the stem and transition to a vine.

Add Ribbon to the Stem

This is optional. I found some ribbon that looks like leaves and wrapped it around some of the pumpkins. I love the way it looks like green leaves that grow with pumpkins

Making the Most of the Original 1932 Pantry

One of the things I love most about our 1932 Tudor is working with the original spaces instead of trying to make this little house something it was never meant to be. This tiny pantry is original to the home, and while it definitely wasn’t designed for the way we store food and kitchen appliances today, I knew I wanted to preserve it.

Instead of wishing for a giant walk-in pantry, I decided to see just how much storage I could fit into this little space. My goal for this small pantry makeover was to maximize every inch while making it feel charming, organized, and appropriate for our 1932 home.

The result might be one of my favorite little spaces in the house! It almost feels like a miniature butler’s pantry tucked right off the kitchen.

Tiny Pantry Storage Ideas That Use Every Inch

When you’re working with a tiny pantry, every inch matters. I started by thinking vertically and looking at all of the areas that weren’t being used to their full potential.

Instead of simply lining groceries up on the existing shelves, I created different zones for baking supplies, snacks, pasta, pantry staples, small appliances, cutting boards, and everyday ingredients.

Creating specific zones has made this small pantry so much easier to use. Everything has a place, and I can immediately see what we have before buying more.

Matching Pantry Containers Make a Small Space Feel Organized

One of the biggest changes was transferring pantry staples into matching clear storage containers.

I found airtight containers that click closed on all four sides to help keep everything fresh. I used different sizes for pasta, cereal, snacks, baking ingredients, dried fruit, and other pantry staples.

For some of the ingredients I reach for often, I added clear glass containers with beautiful bamboo lids. Mixing the glass and clear storage containers adds a little warmth while still keeping everything cohesive.

Use Matching Pantry Labels for a Cohesive Look

In a small pantry, visual clutter can make the entire space feel even smaller. Using matching labels on all of my pantry containers was such a simple way to make the shelves feel calmer and more intentional.

I love that I can see exactly what is inside each container, while the coordinating labels give everything a uniform look.

It’s a small detail, but I think details like this make small pantry organization feel pretty as well as practical.

Create a Baking Station in a Small Pantry

I turned the middle section of the pantry into a little baking station.

Large white ceramic canisters hold some of my most-used baking staples, and I added a two-tier wood lazy Susan nearby for extracts and smaller baking ingredients. I also keep colorful measuring cups and spoons in this area so everything I need for baking is right together.

The white ceramic containers feel substantial enough to anchor the space, while the wood accessories add warmth. This might be my favorite shelf in the whole pantry!

Add a Lazy Susan to Maximize Pantry Storage

One of my favorite tiny pantry storage ideas is using a lazy Susan for small items that would otherwise get lost at the back of a shelf.

Instead of moving five things every time I need an extract or baking ingredient, I can simply turn the lazy Susan to find what I need. Going vertical with a two-tier version gives me even more storage without taking up additional shelf space.

It’s such a simple solution, but in a pantry this small, those few extra inches make a big difference.

Add Wallpaper to Make a Tiny Pantry Feel Special

Just because a pantry is practical doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty!

I added a soft, vintage-inspired wallpaper to the walls and the back of the pantry. I love the subtle pattern and the way it gives this tiny space so much personality without overwhelming it.

The wallpaper also makes the pantry feel more like a little room of its own instead of simply a storage closet. It’s one of those details that makes me happy every time I open the door.

Update Pantry Shelves with Simple Wood Trim

I wanted to give the existing shelves a little more character, so I added small wood trim along the front edges.

This was a relatively simple update, but it made such a difference. The rounded wood detail gives the basic shelves a more custom, vintage-inspired look and brings another natural wood element into the space.

Little architectural details like this are especially fun in an older home because they help newer updates feel as though they belong.

Turn the Bottom of a Small Pantry Into Appliance Storage

Small appliances take up so much kitchen counter space, so I wanted to get as many of mine off the counters as possible.

I added a shelf at the bottom of the pantry to create a dedicated small appliance storage area. Now I have a convenient spot for appliances that I want nearby but don’t necessarily want sitting out in the kitchen all the time.

Using the bottom of the pantry this way also allowed me to reserve the easier-to-reach shelves for food and ingredients we use every day.

Hide Small Appliances with Pinch-Pleated Café Curtains

One of my favorite details in this pantry makeover is the pair of little pinch-pleated café curtains I added in front of the appliance storage.

The curtains hide the bulkier appliances and make the pantry feel more like a tiny butler’s pantry. I love the softness that the fabric adds against all of the shelving and containers.

It’s also an easy solution because I can simply slide the curtains aside whenever I need an appliance.

Store Cutting Boards Vertically in a Tiny Pantry

Cutting boards can be awkward to store, so I used the narrow spaces along the sides and bottom of the pantry instead of taking up valuable shelf space.

Some of my larger wood cutting boards simply lean against the wall near the floor. I also added nails higher up so I can hang other cutting boards vertically.

This is one of my favorite tricks for maximizing storage in a small pantry because it uses wall space that otherwise would have been wasted. Plus, I love seeing the warm vintage wood against the wallpaper.

Use the Pantry Door for Even More Storage

When your pantry is tiny, don’t forget about the door!

The inside of the pantry door is valuable storage space, so I used narrow door-mounted baskets for bottles, jars, packets, and other smaller pantry items.

Getting those items off the main shelves left more room for my larger containers while keeping frequently used ingredients easy to grab.

Add Lighting to a Small Pantry

Good lighting makes such a difference in a tiny pantry, especially when shelves are deep or close together.

I added slim lights underneath the shelves to illuminate each storage area. Now I can actually see what’s at the back of the shelves, and the warm glow makes the wallpaper and little details stand out.

Lighting is one of those small pantry makeover ideas that is both practical and pretty.

Small Pantry Organization Can Be Beautiful Too

I think sometimes we assume that if we don’t have a big walk-in pantry, we can’t have one of those beautiful organized spaces we see online. But working on this little 1932 pantry reminded me that small spaces can be incredibly functional.

Matching containers, airtight storage, labels, vertical storage, a lazy Susan, appliance storage, door organizers, and designated zones helped me fit so much more into this tiny pantry.

Then I added the things that make it feel like home: wallpaper, wood trim, vintage cutting boards, pretty ceramic canisters, bamboo lids, colorful measuring cups, and those sweet little café curtains.

Tiny Pantry, Big Storage

I’m learning over and over again in this 1932 Tudor that smaller doesn’t have to mean less functional. Sometimes having less space actually encourages me to be more thoughtful about what we own and how we use our home.

This original pantry may be tiny, but now nearly every inch is working for us. And instead of trying to turn it into a modern walk-in pantry, I love that we were able to keep this little piece of the home’s original layout while adapting it for the way we live today.

It’s practical, organized, charming, and just a little unexpected—which is exactly what I wanted for our tiny 1932 pantry.

Looking for an easy Halloween party game that kids will actually want to play? This Pin the Face on the Pumpkin game is a silly Halloween twist on the classic Pin the Tail on the Donkey—and you can download the pumpkin and face pieces for free!

This printable Halloween game is simple to prepare, easy to play, and so funny when everyone removes their blindfolds and sees the faces they created. Use it for a Halloween party, pumpkin-carving night, classroom celebration, fall festival, playdate, or family Halloween night.

Best of all, you only need a few basic supplies, and you can print the game at home on standard 8.5-by-11-inch paper or make an extra-large version using 13-by-19-inch paper.

A Fun and Easy Halloween Game for Kids

We originally made this game for our pumpkin party, and it was such a fun activity to add to the celebration. The idea is just like Pin the Tail on the Donkey, but instead of trying to pin on a tail, each player adds facial features to a big printable pumpkin.

The kids can choose from different eyes, noses, and mouths, so every pumpkin face turns out a little different. Once the blindfold comes off, the crooked eyes and upside-down smiles usually get the biggest laughs!

It’s an especially nice party activity because it doesn’t require a complicated setup or a lot of space. Hang the pumpkin on a wall, door, bulletin board, or piece of foam board, and you’re ready to play.

How to Play Pin the Face on the Pumpkin

1. Hang the printable pumpkin at a comfortable height for the children playing.
2. Place a small piece of removable adhesive on the back of each face piece.
3. Let the first player choose an eye, nose, or mouth.
4. Cover the player’s eyes with a blindfold.
5. Gently turn the player around one or two times. For younger children, you can skip the spinning.
6. Point the player toward the pumpkin and let them attach the face piece.
7. Continue until the pumpkin has a complete face—or several wonderfully silly faces!
8. Take off the blindfold and enjoy everyone’s funny creation.

You can play just for laughs or turn it into a friendly contest. Give small prizes for the face that is closest to the right spot, the silliest face, the most creative face, or the most surprised-looking pumpkin.

And we are so excited about this fun party game! It’s a spin on Pin the Tail on the Donkey, for Halloween.

We have also created some different faces that kids can choose when playing this game.

What’s fun is that the kids are blindfolded and the kids find the results hilarious when the blindfolds come off!

As a party favor, we are going to take pictures of the kids with their funny pumpkin faces and send them home so they can remember the fun pumpkin party!!

How to Print the Halloween Game

1. Download the pumpkin game board and face-piece files in your preferred size.
2. Open each file and select your printer.
3. Choose “Actual Size” or a 100-percent scale if you want to preserve the original dimensions.
4. Print the pumpkin on white paper or cardstock.
5. Print the face pieces on cardstock for extra durability.
6. Cut out each face piece along its outer edge.

Make It Easier for Preschoolers

Skip the blindfold and let younger children build their own jack-o’-lantern faces. Set the pieces on a table and use the activity as a Halloween matching game or quiet-time craft.

How to Make $2 Pottery Barn-Inspired Bats

Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to start thinking about some fun DIY décor! If you love Pottery Barn’s stylish Halloween decorations but want a more budget-friendly option, I have the perfect solution for you: Pottery Barn-inspired bats that cost just two dollars to make. Not only are these bats chic and spooky, but they’re also super fun to make, and your kids will love joining in on the crafting fun!

I found these large glitter bats at Dollar Tree, and while they come in bright colors like orange and purple, we’ll be transforming them into something that looks high-end and stylish. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to strip the bats of their glittery exteriors and give them a fresh new look using just a bit of twine. The best part? The materials are incredibly affordable, so you can create a whole swarm of bats for just a few bucks. Let’s dive in!

$2 Pottery Barn-Inspired Bats Supplies

Supplies to make $2 Pottery Barn-Inspired Bats:

1. Glitter bats from Dollar Tree (any color, since we’ll be removing the glitter)
2. Heavy-duty scissors or small, sharp pliers
3. Twine (natural jute or any color of your choice)
4. Hot glue gun and glue sticks
5. Command hooks (for hanging)
6. Optional: Micro lights (to wrap around the bats for added sparkle)

Step-by-Step Directions

1. Remove the Inner Bat Wings

First, let’s prep the bats. You’ll want to start by removing the wings. To do this, hold the bat upright and gently push the wings toward the back of the bat’s body. The wings should pop off easily. Go ahead and take off both wings and set them aside. You won’t need these glittery wings for the final look, so you can discard them or save them for another project.

2. Strip the Glitter Off

Now that you have just the bat’s body, it’s time to take off all the glitter strips. Start by pulling on the body of the bat, and you’ll notice that the glitter ribbon comes off quite easily. Pull the glitter ribbon from the edges and body until the bat is completely bare. It may take a few minutes, but it’s very satisfying to peel it all off!

3. Trim the Tabs

You’ll notice that there are small tabs around the bat’s body where the glitter strips were attached. Using a pair of heavy-duty scissors or sharp pliers, trim off these tabs to create a smooth surface. This will make it easier to wrap the bat with twine later and give the final product a cleaner look.

4. Start Wrapping the Bat’s Ears

Now for the fun part—wrapping the bat in twine! Start with one of the bat’s ears. Place a dab of hot glue behind the ear and press the end of the twine into the glue. Let it set for a moment. Once the glue has cooled and set, begin wrapping the twine around the ear until it’s completely covered. Repeat this step for the other ear.

5. Wrap the Bat’s Head and Body

Next, you’ll move on to wrapping the bat’s head. Start at the top of the head and run a line of hot glue along the edge. Press the twine onto the glue, making sure to create a neat, clean edge. After you’ve secured the twine at the edge, continue wrapping it back and forth to fill in the top of the head. Use your fingers to press the twine into place to make sure everything is nice and snug.

Once the head is done, it’s time to wrap the rest of the body. Apply a line of hot glue to hold the twine as you wrap it around the bat. Keep wrapping the twine evenly and tightly around the body until it’s fully covered. If you notice any gaps, add small dabs of glue to hold the twine in place. When the body is completely wrapped, cut the twine and secure the end to the back of the bat with a bit of hot glue.

6. Wrap the Bat’s Wings

Now let’s move on to the wings! Start at the base of one wing, near where it attaches to the body, and begin wrapping the twine outward. As you wrap, add dabs of hot glue to ensure the twine stays in place. When you reach the scalloped edges of the wing, run a line of hot glue along the edge and wrap the twine a little more loosely until you get to the tip. Once the tip is wrapped, work your way back toward the body, this time wrapping the twine tightly.

Repeat the process for the other wing. You can wrap the wings as tightly or loosely as you prefer. Wrapping the wings loosely will create a more airy, decorative effect, while tighter wrapping will use more twine but give a cleaner, more polished look.

7. Hang Up Your Bats

Now that your bat is fully wrapped in twine, it’s time to display it! I recommend using Command hooks for easy hanging without damaging your walls. You can also get creative and hang these bats from your porch ceiling or trees for an outdoor Halloween display. If you plan to hang them where they’ll be seen from both sides, consider wrapping both the front and back of the bats to make them look good from every angle.

8. Add Micro Lights for a Magical Touch

To take your Pottery Barn-inspired bats to the next level, consider adding some micro lights. How to Hide a Wall Switch Plate

Our small 1932 Tudor kitchen had one decorating challenge that I could not ignore: a huge five-gang light switch right in the center of the wall.

Five switches take up a surprising amount of space, and the wall plate immediately drew your eye when you walked into the room. I wanted to create a beautiful gallery wall there, but I did not want the oversized switch plate to become the center of it. I decided the easiest way to hide the wall switch plate was with a painting that could open whenever we needed to use the lights.

Why We Did Not Move the Five-Gang Wall Switch

Our Tudor has original lath-and-plaster walls. Moving the switches could have meant opening the plaster, rerouting five electrical connections, repairing the wall, and repainting everything.

That would have been difficult, messy, and expensive. Instead, I decided to leave the switches exactly where they were and hide them behind a painting that could open whenever we needed to use them.

Turn a Painting into a Hinged Wall Switch Plate Cover

I already owned a framed painting that was the perfect size to cover the five-gang wall plate. I built a shallow wood support frame behind it and connected the painting to the new frame with two small hinges.

The support frame stays on the wall while the painting lifts open like a tiny door. All five switches remain easy to reach, and when the painting is closed, it blends beautifully into the surrounding gallery wall.

I designed the entire gallery wall around this hinged painting and used a full-size butcher paper template to perfect the spacing before adding any nails.

Important Safety Notes Before Covering a Wall Plate

This project is a decorative cover, not an electrical modification. The wall plate, switches, and electrical box should remain properly installed and fully accessible.

Do not attach wood, hinges, adhesive, or hardware to the wall plate itself. Never cover exposed wiring or an uncovered electrical box. Make sure the painting has enough depth and clearance that it does not press against the switches when closed.

If you are unsure about the condition of the wiring, wall plate, or electrical box, ask a licensed electrician before beginning the project.

Supplies to Hide a Wall Switch Plate with a Painting

• A framed painting large enough to cover the complete wall plate
• Wood molding that coordinates with the size and depth of the painting frame
• Measuring tape
• Pencil
• Miter saw or miter box kit
• Wood glue
• Nail gun and appropriately sized brad nails
• Two small hinges and screws
• Wood stain that coordinates with the painting frame
• Paintbrush or staining cloth
• Strong double-sided mounting tape rated for the combined weight and your wall surface
• Level
• Safety glasses

Step 1: Measure the Wall Plate and Painting

Measure the complete width and height of the wall plate. Then make sure your framed artwork covers it with extra room on every side.

Hold the painting over the switches and check that it can open without hitting a cabinet, corner, light fixture, or neighboring artwork. You also need enough clearance behind the painting so it does not press the switches when it is closed.

Step 2: Plan the Wood Support Frame

The new support frame will attach to the wall and sit directly behind the painting. I chose molding that was similar in size to the existing painting frame so the new wood would disappear behind it when viewed from the front.

The support frame needs to be deep enough to clear the wall plate and switches while still allowing the painting to sit close to the wall.

Step 3: Cut the Molding with Mitered Corners

I measured four pieces of molding to create a rectangular frame the same size as the back of the painting. Then I used a miter saw kit to cut each end at a 45-degree angle.

Dry-fit all four pieces before gluing them together. This is the best time to make small adjustments and confirm that the corners meet neatly.

Step 4: Glue the Wood Frame Together

I applied wood glue to each mitered edge and pressed the four corners together. Check that the frame is square and wipe away any excess glue before it dries.

Let the wood glue dry according to the manufacturer’s directions before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Reinforce the Frame with a Nail Gun

Once the glue was dry, I used my nail gun to reinforce the corners. I added small brad nails through the outside edges to hold each mitered joint together.

Choose nails that are long enough to secure the joint but short enough that they will not come through the face of the molding. Always wear eye protection and keep your hands clear of the nail path.

Step 6: Stain the Support Frame to Match the Painting

I stained the new wood frame to coordinate with the existing frame around the painting. I also stained it on the wall – which I do NOT recommend. Stain it before you hang it up LOL! The stain colors do not need to be absolutely identical, but a similar finish helps the two frames look like one piece from the side.

Allow the stain to dry completely before attaching the hinges or hanging the frame.

Step 7: Attach the Painting with Two Small Hinges

I positioned two small hinges along one side of the support frame and attached the other side of each hinge to the painting frame.

Before adding all the screws, test the movement and make sure the painting is straight. The hinges should allow the artwork to lift easily without binding or scraping against the support frame.

Step 8: Test the Hinged Painting Before Hanging It

Open and close the painting several times. Make sure the hinges feel secure and the frame does not twist.

Hold the complete piece over the wall plate and confirm that all of the switches are easy to reach. Check again that the back of the painting does not touch or activate any switch when the artwork is closed.

Step 9: Attach the Support Frame to the Wall

I used very strong double-sided mounting tape to attach my lightweight support frame to the wall. The tape has worked so well for this project and allowed me to avoid additional holes in our original plaster.

Follow the tape manufacturer’s directions carefully and make sure it is rated for the total weight of the wood frame, painting, and hardware as well as your wall finish. Clean and prepare the surface exactly as directed before installing the tape.

For a heavier painting, use mechanical picture-hanging hardware suited to the frame, your wall type, and the combined weight. Do not rely on adhesive if the manufacturer does not specifically approve it for your materials or load.

Step 10: Center the Painting Over the Wall Plate

Use a level to position the support frame so the closed painting completely disguises the wall plate. Press or secure the frame according to the directions for your selected mounting method.

Once the frame is secure, open the painting and test every switch again. The finished cover should remain stable while opening and closing and should never interfere with the operation of the switches.

Easy Access to All Five Light Switches

Now it takes only a second to lift the painting, turn the kitchen lights on or off, and close it again. The giant switch plate is still completely accessible, but it has disappeared into the design of the room.

This solution gave me the look I wanted without relocating electrical wiring or opening our original plaster walls.

Incorporating the Hinged Painting into a Gallery Wall

Instead of making the painting look like a stand-alone cover, I surrounded it with collected art and a ceramic candle sconce. Once it became part of a larger arrangement, the hidden function felt even more seamless.

A Hinged Painting Can Hide Other Wall Controls

The same basic idea could be adapted to disguise a thermostat, alarm panel, doorbell chime, media panel, or another wall control, as long as the device remains accessible and has the ventilation and clearance required by its manufacturer.

I am planning a smaller gallery wall on the opposite side of the kitchen to disguise our thermostat next.

How to Create a Beautiful Gallery Wall Using a Butcher Paper Template

A Gallery Wall Made for My Small 1932 Tudor Kitchen

One of my favorite things about living in an older home is finding creative ways to work with all of its little quirks. My 1932 Tudor is filled with beautiful original details, but it also has a few things that can be challenging to decorate around.

The wall in our small kitchen is a perfect example. A huge five-gang light switch sits right in the center of it. Because we have original lath-and-plaster walls, moving five switches would have been difficult, messy, and expensive. Instead of fighting the placement, I decided to turn the entire wall into something beautiful.

Reusing Art from My Previous Home

I brought out a collection of paintings that I had displayed in my last home and started experimenting with different arrangements. I love reusing meaningful pieces because they instantly make a new home feel familiar, layered, and collected.

Gallery walls are also a wonderful way to mix art that might not work anywhere else on its own. The paintings do not need to match perfectly. Repeating a few colors, wood tones, or frame finishes will help a varied collection feel intentional.

Hiding a Five-Gang Light Switch Behind a Painting

One of my paintings happened to be the perfect size to cover the entire five-gang switch plate. I created a simple hinged frame behind the painting so it could sit flat with the rest of the gallery wall and lift open whenever we need to use the switches.

It is so easy to flip up the painting, turn the lights on or off, and close it again. The switches remain completely accessible, but no one would ever guess they are hiding behind the art.

Planning the Gallery Wall Around the Hinged Painting

Because the hinged painting needed to remain centered over the switches, I used it as the anchor for the gallery wall and arranged everything else around it.

I wanted the finished wall to look collected rather than overly symmetrical, but I still wanted the spacing to feel balanced. With original plaster walls, I also did not want to make a dozen unnecessary nail holes while figuring out the arrangement.

That is where the butcher paper template made the entire project so much easier.

How to Make a Butcher Paper Template for a Gallery Wall

This full-size paper template lets you experiment with the placement of every painting and decorative object before putting any nails in the wall. You can erase, rearrange, and step back as many times as you need until the gallery wall feels just right.

Supplies for a Gallery Wall Paper Template

• Butcher paper, kraft paper, or wide wrapping paper
• Painter’s tape
• Pencil and eraser
• Black permanent marker
• Measuring tape
• Level
• Your framed paintings, art, sconces, and decorative objects
• Nails or picture hangers appropriate for the weight of each item and your wall type

Step 1: Cover the Gallery Wall Area with Butcher Paper

I cut a piece of butcher paper large enough to cover the entire area where I wanted the gallery wall. I attached it to the wall with painter’s tape and made sure the paper was straight and smooth.

If your paper is not wide enough, overlap several pieces and tape the seams together. The finished template only needs to be sturdy enough to take down and put back up once your layout is complete.

Step 2: Position and Trace Each Piece of Art

I held each painting and decorative item against the paper where I thought it might go and lightly traced around it with a pencil.

Using pencil is important during this stage because it lets you erase any placement you do not like. I moved several pieces more than once before I found an arrangement that felt balanced.

Step 3: Build the Arrangement Around an Anchor Piece

Every gallery wall benefits from an anchor. It might be the largest painting, a mirror, a favorite family photograph, or another meaningful object.

For my wall, the hinged painting hiding the light switch had to remain in one exact location. I treated it as my anchor and built outward, mixing horizontal and vertical paintings with smaller pieces to fill the spaces around it.

Step 4: Check the Gallery Wall Spacing

Step back often and look at the template from across the room. I tried to keep the amount of space between the pieces consistent without making the arrangement feel too rigid.

It also helps to look at the overall outer shape of the gallery wall. The individual pieces can be different sizes and shapes while the complete arrangement still feels visually balanced.

Step 5: Trace the Final Arrangement with a Marker

Once I loved the placement, I went over the final pencil outlines with a black permanent marker. This made the finished arrangement easy to see and kept any earlier pencil marks from confusing me during installation.

You can also write the name or a quick description of each item inside its outline so you remember exactly where everything belongs.

Step 6: Mark the Nail Placement for Every Frame

Before adding any nails, I measured the hanger location on the back of each painting and transferred that point to the corresponding outline.

This step is especially important because the nail does not always sit at the very top of the frame. If your artwork hangs from a wire, pull the wire upward the way it will rest on the nail and measure from that point.

Step 7: Install the Picture Hangers Through the Paper

When I was ready to hang everything, I put the butcher paper template back on the wall and installed the nails or picture hangers directly through the marked points.

Then I carefully removed the paper and hung each piece. Everything landed exactly where I had planned it, and I did not have to measure the same spaces over and over.

Add Dimension with a Ceramic Candle Sconce

I love mixing dimensional objects into a gallery wall because they keep the arrangement from feeling flat or too formal. Along with my paintings, I included one of my favorite ceramic beaded candle sconces and a battery-operated taper candle.

The creamy ceramic sconce has beautiful beaded detailing and looks like a much more expensive designer piece. You can see all the details in my $30 ceramic candle wall sconces post.

A Battery-Operated Candle Adds a Cozy Glow

The brown fluted taper candle has a shimmering flame that looks so much like a real candle. It comes with a remote, adjustable brightness, and two-, four-, and six-hour timer settings.

I can turn it on from across the kitchen or set the timer and let it turn off automatically. It gives this little corner such a cozy evening glow without adding electrical wiring to our original plaster walls.

Where to Find Affordable Gallery Wall Art

If you are starting from scratch, thrift stores, estate sales, antique shops, Facebook Marketplace, and printable art are all wonderful sources. Look for a mix of horizontal and vertical pieces, different frame widths, and one or two dimensional accents.

Do not overlook art you already own. A painting that feels too small or awkward by itself can look completely different when it becomes part of a larger arrangement.

DIY No-Carve Monogram Pumpkin is the Easiest Pumpkin Craft

Fall is all about pumpkins! Whether you’re decorating your front porch, adding a touch of fall to your mantel, or looking for a fun crafting activity, pumpkins are the ultimate fall decor item. Over the past 17 years that I’ve been blogging and creating content, I’ve crafted literally hundreds of pumpkin projects. From painted pumpkins to fabric-covered pumpkins, I’ve tried it all. But this project? It’s one of my favorites! Not only is it super simple and quick to make, but it’s also a perfect craft to do with family or friends. I recently made these DIY no-carve monogram pumpkins with my mom and sisters, and we had the best time together. If you’re looking for a fun, personalized fall craft that requires minimal supplies, this is it!

Six Best DIY Pumpkin Crafts

And today I am joining five friends who are sharing the prettiest pumpkin to make! Be sure to scroll down and PIN the tutorials to make later!

Supplies You Will Need

One of the best parts about this DIY project is how few supplies are needed. Here’s what you’ll need:

• Faux pumpkin
• A napkin with a design you love
• Matte Mod Podge
• Gold thumbtacks
• Pencil

That’s it! These are probably items you already have around the house or can pick up at your local craft store. It’s budget-friendly, which makes it even better.

Step 1: Trace Your Monogram

The first step is to trace the letter you want to monogram on your pumpkin. You can either freehand it or print out an example of the letter to trace. I like to use a straight edge for any straight parts of the letter and something round, like a cup or small plate, for the curves. Here’s a helpful tip: don’t center the letter! When you place your pumpkin on the floor or a surface, the top part of the pumpkin is the most visible. To ensure your monogram is seen, trace the letter slightly higher than the center of the pumpkin.

Step 2: Apply the Thumbtacks

Once your letter is traced, it’s time to start applying the thumbtacks! This step is incredibly satisfying. I’ve found that it’s easiest to center the thumbtack on the lines instead of trying to line up the edge of the thumbtack with the line. This technique makes the lines appear much straighter. Another tip – to make it easier to control, you can put the pumpkin between your knees to steady it while you insert the thumbtacks (see my cute mom below).

Start at the top of your letter and work your way down and across. You can choose between two different methods for applying the thumbtacks:

• Uniform Rows: Follow the traced line and apply the thumbtacks in straight, even rows. Place the second row so that the edges of the thumbtacks just meet.
• Mermaid Scale Rows: Start with one row of thumbtacks along the traced line. Then, for the second row, slightly overlap the first row, giving a layered “mermaid scale” effect.

Both methods look beautiful, and you can decide which one you prefer! In the photos of my pumpkins, you’ll see that one of the “J” monograms has straight, uniform rows while the other “J” features the mermaid scale look. Both give a unique touch!

Step 3: Cut and Prepare the Napkin Design

Now that your monogram is done, it’s time to move on to the decorative part of the pumpkin. Pick a napkin design that you love. Florals work beautifully for this project, but any design will do. Before you cut out your design, be sure to peel off the backing of the napkin so you’re left with the top, printed layer.

Once you have peeled the napkin, carefully cut around the design. If you’re working with florals, cutting around the individual flowers and leaves gives the pumpkin a more intricate and delicate look.

Step 4: Apply the Napkin with Mod Podge

With your cut-out napkin design ready, it’s time to adhere it to your pumpkin using Mod Podge. Here’s a key tip: use matte Mod Podge instead of glossy. Matte Mod Podge dries clear, while glossy can leave a shiny residue if any goes outside the edges of your napkin.

Start by applying a thin, even layer of Mod Podge slightly smaller than the napkin cutout. Press the napkin onto the pumpkin, smoothing it out as you go. Then, fold back the edges of the napkin, apply more Mod Podge to the pumpkin’s surface, and press the edges down. This ensures that the entire napkin is securely adhered and lies flat on the pumpkin.

Repeat this process for all of the napkin designs you want to apply, whether it’s one large design or a few smaller ones placed around the pumpkin.

Step 5: Let It Dry and Enjoy!

Once you’ve finished applying the thumbtacks and napkin designs, let your pumpkin dry completely. It usually takes a few hours for the Mod Podge to dry, but once it’s set, you’re left with a beautiful, personalized pumpkin that’s perfect for fall.

I love how versatile this project is! You can create a monogram for each family member or experiment with different napkin designs for a truly unique look. The combination of the gold thumbtacks and the delicate napkin art adds a touch of elegance to your fall decor.

A Fun Craft for Kids and Friends

One of the things I love most about this project is that it’s perfect for a group craft. Whether you’re doing it with your kids, friends, or family, it’s an easy, fun, and mess-free activity. Imagine hosting a fall girls’ night and everyone going home with their own personalized pumpkin! 18 DIY Pumpkin Ideas for Fall

I love this time of year. The weather is beginning to cool down and fall is just around the corner. One easy way to bring fall into your home is by creating some pretty pumpkins! Over the years I’ve shared so many DIY pumpkin tutorials. I thought it would be fun to round them all up into one post so you can see the different ideas and pick your favorite pumpkin to make!

Here are a few of my favorite pumpkin tutorials I’ve shared!

Yarn Pumpkin Garland

I shared our fall mantel last week and I love the way it looks! The DIY Yarn Pumpkin Garland was so easy and fun to make! You can use it in so many ways for early fall — on a mantel like I did, on a shelf, over a doorway, etc!

Colorful Pumpkin DIY Ideas

When we lived at daybreak I created a colorful pumpkin porch and it’s still my favorite! I spray painted pumpkins, created a DIY pumpkin garland for over the door and a DIY ombre pumpkin rainbow wreath. I have the details on those pumpkin projects on the post that is linked above!

DIY houndstooth pumpkin wreath

Take houndstooth material and create little houndstooth pumpkins! You can make them in any size you want. I made some small ones and created a warm and cozy pumpkin wreath!

DIY gold geometric pumpkins

Turn carvable pumpkins into gold geometric pumpkins. They look so pretty at night!

Embroidery Hoop and Paper Pumpkins

Turn embroidery hoops and pretty paper into the most adorable pumpkins. I used paper from my American Crafts line and I love the little house paper in that line!

Gilded Leaf Pumpkins

Gild fall leaves and decoupage them onto pumpkins for a fresh and beautiful take on fall!

3-D Pumpkin Art Wall

For this easy craft, I used dollar store frames which I spray painted, then cut foam pumpkins in half and mounted them inside the frames on scrapbook paper. I used command hooks so I didn’t have to put any nails in my wall!

Stacked Pumpkin Topiary

This is one of my favorite pumpkin tutorials. I painted pumpkins white and black, then stacked them to create this fun topiary!

Polka Dot Pumpkin Tutorial

Turn plush minky material into the softest pumpkins with this tutorial. I even made a giant one to use as a pumpkin pillow!

Gold Glitter and Grout Pumpkins

I covered foam pumpkins with a layer of plaster and then added gold glitter to create a concrete-looking pumpkin. I loved the contrast between the matte plaster an the sparkle!

Plaid Pumpkin and Ruffle Wreath

One of my favorite wreaths I’ve ever made! I used raw silk material to make the ruffles, then cut a foam pumpkin in half and decoupaged grey and white gingham fabric on top and ended with a silk bow! I might have to make a new one this year!

Ruffled Pumpkins

You don’t have to use traditional halloween colors when you are creating pumpkins! I used some of my favorite bright material to create these ruffled pumpkins and I love how bright and happy they all look together!

Dollar Store Crackled Pumpkins

This is an oldie but a goodie. Turn dollar store pumpkins into crackled pumpkins. You can paint the pumpkins white and put a color over the top so that the white comes through.

Fresh Sweater Pumpkins

Use inexpensive dollar store pumpkins and transform them into beautiful decor with thrifted sweaters! I need to make some PINK ones this year!

Painted Autumn Pumpkin Mantel

Another favorite! I took craft pumpkins, spray painted them white and painted wood letters that spell AUTUMN. I loved how simple it was on our fall mantel.

Easy Scrap Wood Pumpkins

Take scrap pieces of wood and turn them into cute pumpkins! n easy and inexpensive idea.

Elevated Toilet Paper Pumpkins

Transform toilet paper into the cutest pumpkins for fall in FOUR different shapes and customize them for YOUR decor!
