I love a fireplace and mantel for Fall – they are so cozy and fun to decorate for the holidays!!

Update — Here’s what that fireplace ended up looking like. In case you have a corner fireplace you want to install!

We added a step which is nice if you want to sit in front of the fire. We also added subway tile over the entire wall and simple wood trim on the sides.

And some custom built-ins:

Fireplace After with Built-Ins @ Sarah Macklem Interiors

This is a really great example of how you can put a television over your mantel and still decorate for seasons. I love the shelves to both sides and the way they framed out the entire wall with trim at the top.

Painted Bricks and Built-Ins @ Better Homes and Gardens

Another great example of how paint can transform a fireplace. I also love how they added a bookcase to the one side to offset the size of the fireplace on the other side. The mantel is beautiful with classic lines.

Look at how updated this fireplace makeover is. All they did was paint and change out the mantel. Also the cabinets have doors added as well as trim to the top. It really updates this space!

Another gorgeous fireplace makeover. Paint works wonder and a new wood fireplace mantel brings a pop to the whole space. I love that they added trim to the mantel but left some of the original bricks and painted them black.

To add a whole different look, consider paneling over a huge brick fireplace and adding a beautiful thick mantel. I love the lights that are built in at the top of the all too.

Hmm it seems like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll
just sum it up what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to the whole thing.

Do you have any tips and hints for newbie blog
    writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.

I really like the idea of White Brick Fireplace but I am not sure about the kind of maintenance it would take on routine basis. One need to think about it especially in my case where we have kids who hate cleanliness 😀
But there is no denial in fact that they just look lovely. Mind blowing work! Thanks for sharing great wisdom 🙂

Very nice…looking to redo my old red fireplace…leaning toward the fresh look of white. Sad to see the makeover that painted over that besutiful wood wall…what a waste..

    Hi Jen,

Just a fan giving some hopefully helpful and non-mean-spirited criticism. I love reading your blog in google reader, but I had to unsubscribe today. I went out of town for a bit and when I got back there were over 50 posts. And they aren’t truncated (some people complain about them, but I loooove truncated posts so I can click on to the things I really want) like they are on your blog. So I have to scroll for forever and there’s all these ads and things at the bottom that just makes it too difficult to get through all the mess of posts. I will hopefully remember to just come and check out the blog regularly, but will miss the ease of google reader. I don’t know if and what you’d have to do to fix it (assuming you’d even want to), but the other blogs I follow are a snap in GR. Just throwing it out there. Keep up the great blog. Love, Stephanie

Stephanie Dix » Hi Stephanie — Thanks for your comment! I have been thinking of truncating the feed posts — and now I just might! Thank you!

I appreciate you comment so much Stephanie!! I tried switching over my feed to a different provider and they had a technical problem where all of my tweets were coming through as posts. I think it is all fixed now though. I am so sorry for the annoyance and I hope you might consider resubscribing. I love connecting with people, that’s why I blog. You are so sweet to take the time to leave a comment!

I think these look great, but it would be nice to have something other than white painted brick to compare in the top ten.

      Hi Sandy!!

Thanks for your comment. I picked that style of fireplace just because it’s the look I am looking for on my current project. I also love the look of unpainted brick. I think I will make another gallery with beautiful unpainted brick fireplaces. I think both styles are beautiful!

We recently restored our fireplace, too. I love the painted brick, but we went the other way and stripped away loads of layers of paint to reveal the original cast iron. Hi Christine!! Wow- your fireplace looks awesome. I love the original cast iron that you uncovered. Amazing job!! I left a comment but I’m not sure if you received it. Great job!!

I am obsessed with fireplaces right now! My husband isn’t interested in working on another project right now but thanks for fueling my fire… I’ll start nagging about it again!

I’m seeing painted brick all. over. the. place. Am I the only one that hates it? My fireplace is HUGE and very dominating. It’s made from gorgeous reclaimed brick and I will never paint it, even though it is a light suck.

However, I do love all the additions of built ins, and mantels, barn beams, and whatever else. Really makes them show stoppers.

Hi! I love all these ideas and it makes me wish I had a fireplace in my house to redo! I clicked over to this post from my reader so that I could pin it. I usually read your posts in my reader… I was just curious if you knew that your blog has a lot of (negative) political ads on it right now? Of course I’m not sure, but I have a feeling they might not represent your views at all. Maybe something to check into.

    Stephanie —

Your fireplace redo is awesome. I love that you took a fireplace that you didn’t use and made it usable. I bet you love it now!! It’s so pretty.

I love adding built-ins around the fireplace. It’s a bigger visual impact and you get practical storage space as well.

I agree!! And built ins are so fun to accessorize 🙂

Great ideas…my own fireplace remodel was more than just paint (giant surround, off-center location, swap from wood to gas). I do love my painted surround–it turned out so nice that even my dad, who always prefers natural wood, did a painted mantel in their new home. Ha! http://theprojectspot.blogspot.com/2011/01/fireplace-redo.html

Thanks so much for including my fireplace!! These are all gorgeous…but I really love the HUGE improvement from Homemade Ginger. This probably sounds silly, but I love how she has a picture frame sitting on a candle holder (I have never seen that). Genius! Going to steal that idea!

    • Jen says

      September 26, 2012 at 9:48 AM

You are welcome!! I love your fireplace makeover. And thanks for pointing out the frame on a candlestick – I didn’t see that at first, but what a fun idea!!

I liked a lot of those, but very few left the natural brick color. Is a painted brick fireplace the norm in design?

    • Jen says

      September 26, 2012 at 9:47 AM

I love the look of natural brick. I think it’s classic. I think I chose painted brick fireplaces subconsciously because it’s the look I’m going for in the project that I am working on. But I also think natural brick is timeless 🙂
