Getting Organized For School Mornings

Getting Organized for School Morning

Good morning Tatertots & Jello readers! Guess what, I have big news, my baby girl starts school tomorrow!

I am so excited for her, and I know she’s going to love, it but I am not looking forward to all those early, and rushed, school mornings for the next 13 years! Because I’m usually up late working on my blog, my goal is to be able to sleep in as long as possible, which means I have to be super organized to have the mornings run smoothly. Since I know that many of your kids will also be going back to school in the days, and weeks, to come I thought I’d share my trick for having an organized school morning: planning ahead. Here are three ways I’m planning ahead this year!

Pre-made Breakfasts

To help ease the rush, but still be able to have a hearty and nutritional breakfast, I pre-made a few things and put them in the freezer. The first thing I made were English muffin sandwiches. I toasted English muffins and then added a slice of cheese, turkey bacon, and an egg. The next thing I made were Hash Brown Stacks {I made up that name}. All I did to make them was purchase a package of pre-made hash browns from Trader Joe’s, added a slice of cheese, a couple slices of avocado and an egg on top. Let’s just say I made a lot of eggs that day!

Once they were all toasted, baked and assembled, I packed them up and threw them in the freezer for those busy school mornings!

I also plan on making a few hearty breakfast breads and some healthy breakfast burritos, to give us some variety in the mornings.

Planning Outfits Ahead of Time

I don’t know if your daughters are like this, but my daughter is very picky about what she wears. I expected that from her when she’s older but I never thought she’d care that much at 3 1/2!!! To avoid lot’s of “I don’t want to wear that” arguments early in the morning, I got these Organizables that will allow us to plan out all her outfits for the week ahead of time.

Organizables are great for organizing school clothes because there are pockets in the front, which allows us to be able to plan out everything, including underwear, socks, barrettes, etc.!

Because my daughter is so particular about what she wears I brought out all the Organizables at once and we filled them together. She picked out all the outfits, and put a pair of underwear in each of the pockets. Then I let her zip them all up herself, which she really enjoyed!

Organize Hair Accessories

The next thing I know will be a hassle in the mornings is doing her hair. She decided a few months ago that she wanted to grow her hair out but I don’t think she realized that mean I was going to actually make her “do” her hair. Over the last couple of months we have collected lots of hair accessories and now that the school year is here I needed to get them all organized and easily accessible.

To get all her hair accessories organized I grabbed a few things around the house and placed them in this basket on her bathroom counter, along with a spray bottle full of water, detangler and some hair spray.

I found this small glass for her larger barrettes,

and then I used these glass spice jars, from IKEA, to organize her large hair ties and small barrettes.

Next I purchased a daily pill box to store all of her tiny, colorful rubber band hair ties. I found this one at Target and I love it because it has a lock on it so she can’t open it and dump them all out!

These are just a few of the ways I am preparing for those busy school mornings! Since this will be our first year of school I would also love to hear how you organize your kids and those busy school mornings! Thanks for letting me be here today and wish me luck!!!

Wow – I love that idea Anna!

I have a child who has the hardest time getting ready for school. We picked out her outfits ahead of time — I need those clothes organizers — so cool. And the accessories organizer is amazing!

Can you guess what I’m doing?

  1. Wendy B., NJ says:

Hi there…just found this great idea for the make ahead sandwiches…however, the link for instructions is no longer valid…any chance you can re-share your instructinos??

  2. Hi Chantell, I’m not Anna or Jen, but didn’t know where to start either…. I found them on Amazon (after only one other site search) Not sure of the cost comparatively, but here’s the link: http://www.amazon.com/Organizables-Childrens-Hanging-Organizer-Standard/dp/B0054R890M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346588591&sr=8-1&keywords=Organizables
    Good Luck!!!!

  3. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many times did my daughter go to school with messed up hair- Im not proud but that is due to her fighting me every step from waking up, down to eating. SO not only will getting her clothes out be great, but the bin with hairstuff! i will let you know how it goes down in a week. Thank you! where did you get the clothes organizer? i went to ask anna’s blog and didn’t know where to start.

  4. If you add some lavender oil to the water bottle her hair will not need detangler (at least my daughter’s curls don’t). Plus, I hate to admit this, but I think the lavender oil might be the reason she didn’t get lice when her brother and I did recently……

  5. Your egg breakfast sandwich link isn’t working (tried both)

  6. The link doesn’t work? Am I the only one having problems?

  7. Those sandwiches look yummy! I’ve never made eggs in muffin tins like that. How long do you bake them?

  8. How do you cook the eggs? Obviously in a muffin tin, but at what temperature and for how long? Greased or ungreased? I have never thought of cooking them this way, but it seems brilliant for premade frozen breakfast sandwiches!

  9. wow, talk about organization! I especially love the planned-ahead outfits, those would save a lot of time. do the Organizables come in adult sized? haha

  10. Thank you for the great breakfast ideas! These easy freeze-ahead sandwiches will be perfect to heat, then eat on my commute to school!

  11. What a great post – thanks for sharing!
