fixer upper waco hot spots

Last weekend I went on a FUN girls’ trip to Waco Texas. Do you know what else is in Waco?? That’s right – Magnolia Market and Fixer Upper!!! We were lucky enough to stay at Chip and Jo’s Magnolia House too. It was so fun! This was my first time in Waco and it more than lived up to my expectations! I am going to tell you all about my thoughts on Waco, Texas, the Magnolia House, Magnolia Market and everything in between. I have tried to keep it as concise as possible but there is so much to tell!! And at the end I have a little Fixer Upper #Shiplap giveaway. So make sure to enter at the bottom of the post!! Magnolia House Fixer Upper Weekend Waco Texas Review

magnolia market trip

We ate A LOT of yummy food on the trip. So if you are heading to Austin and/or Waco, Texas – be sure to check out these restaurants!

lick ice cream in texas

Lick Ice Cream in Austin. All of the ice cream and ingredients the use comes from a local dairy and local sourcing. The flavors were delightful – like Dark chocolate with olive oil and sea salt and Roasted beets and fresh mint. So good!

(photo from Capturing Joy)

The first night we stayed overnight at Kristen at Kristen Duke Capturing Joy’s home. She was such a wonderful hostess. She had a basket of toiletries, water bottles and snacks and matching towels for us. And in the morning her sweet hubby made us sweet and savory crepes. It was amazing!

Harp Design Co Shop in Waco Texas

Magnolia House Fixer Upper Weekend Waco Review. The next morning we headed to Waco. Our first stop was Harp Design Co. We were so lucky to meet Clint and his wife and we even got a personalized tour of their workshop. He also told us the story behind getting to work on Fixer Upper and it is amazing. Clint is the most humble and down-to-earth guy. I am so thrilled for them.

harp design co workshop tour waco texas

Be sure to check out their shop online and also to see the AMAZING custom hand-made furniture that they can create. I tried to get my Periscope to work during the trip and it was being wonky – I really wanted to do some live video from the trip.

waco hot spots torchys

For lunch we ate at Torchy’s Tacos. Talk about amazing. They were just my style. I had the ahi tacos and the jamaican jerk tacos. Plus they have the most amazing queso and for dessert deep fried chocolate chip cookie dough. WOW!!!

magnolia market visit

After lunch, we headed over to Magnolia Market. I don’t know what I was expecting, maybe a normal store? No. It’s an experience all on it’s own. There were so many people there!! We were able to get a tour of the market as well as the office’s and we found out that the week before 35,000 people had been to the market. crazy!!!

magnolia market

We also got to go on top of the market where there is a rooftop terrace. So fun!!!

magnolia market offices tour

We also got a sneak peek of the new Garden Shop that is almost ready to open. So cute!

magnolia market garden shop

After the market we tracked down Pockey-o’s ice cream truck – they make homemade ice cream sandwiches. The cookies are made fresh each day so they are super fresh and the ice cream is amazing. I tried the coconut chocolate chip cookies and butterfinger ice cream = heavenly!!

pokey-o ice cream

That night we stayed at the Magnolia House. And I just have to say – it is SO much more beautiful in person, if that is even possible.

It is so amazing. Every single detail is done to perfection.

It’s so light and bright. And the small details like the cement tile in the upstairs coffee/cards room and the bathrooms. The kitchen is beautiful with those gorgeous shelves. And I loved all of the small details like the dishes and the cutting boards. They even had fresh rolls and pastries on the table for us to eat the next morning.

magnolia house kitchen details

The caretakers live in a home on the property in the back. And it was just on the latest episode. So be sure to check it out!

magnolia house coffee and card room

Some other details that I loved were the hanging nightstands in the downstairs bedroom, the tiny bedrooms upstairs are tucked into eaves and are the size of a closet but are so cozy. There is just enough room for a twin size bed. They used floating shelves on both sides of the bed as nightstands and it’s such a great use of space. Also each of the bedrooms had a wooden luggage rack which I thought was very thoughtful.

magnolia house kitchen and dining room

In the main room there is a little library space tucked under the stairs. I loved that use of space too.

lula janes bakery waco texas

The next morning we headed out to Lula Jane’s bakery for breakfast LOL. Amazing pies and cakes.

thrift stores in waco texas

Then we went looking for treasures. There are so many cute shops in Waco. Be sure to check out Junque in the Trunk.

It was such a FUN trip!!!!!!

And I picked up a shirt that I transformed a little to remember the trip:

Chip with his “how’s my hair look” or never turning down a challenge or going down to his underwear and a tool belt ina store. I laugh in almost every episode. Jo I wish I could have an ounce of her creativity. Love the show, love them. One of my new favorite words.. shiplap

I would either say the Barndominium, or the couple that inherited the grandfathers house, or the one they did for one of Jo’s old classmates. The best part about them all is the interaction between Chip and Jo…its a beautiful thing 🙂

I love Fixer Upper and all they do. I have to say my most favorite is the Bed & Breakfast with the Guest house on the side. I have always wanted to have a B & B myself. Love it.

I love Fixer Upper. I am just watching Season 3 on Netflix. My favorite is the Mid Century Modern, I am so proud of Joanna for doing such an awesome job, even when Chip doubted.

  9. Maggie says

My favorite Fixxer Upper would probably be the one where Chip dresses up as an old lady and plays the organ in the thrift store…not sure what that is called. But I just love watching Chip make a fool of himself!!

    Thanks for the contest.

One of my favorite episodes was when then fixed up the Bed & Breakfast!

  13. Makenna Dubay says

    April 10, 2016 at 12:48 PM

My favorite episode has to be the episode when Joanna asks Chip to repaint the house after it’s been painted and finished. And he is so sweet and funny and kind. I mean, that is do something I would ask of my hubby – and he would kill me! But let’s be honest, I think what we all love about this show (besides the amazing before/after views, incredible construction and beautiful designs) are how Chip and Joanna Gaines are such charismatic and family-centered people and they really want their show to highlight those values. You can’t root against that!

Looking forward to reading more of your posts –

  15. Susan Aldridge says

    April 10, 2016 at 9:30 AM

Favorite episode? That’s not even possible to determine. EVERY episode is a “must watch”. My favorite thing about each episode is the way that Chip and Joanna interact. The “shopping shenanigans” always make me smile. I love a show that can entertain me, teach me and leave me feeling creative and happy at the end. I am so glad this little family is enjoying success.

I love the episode that they did for Max Lucado’s daughter. I loved that German Schmear they did to the brick on the outside of their house. I want to do that to the red brick fireplace in my family room. Also, any episode that they use a lot of shipman in. HA!

My favorite is seriously each one… But if I had to choose, I would choose season 2 episode 9- unique fixer. I love the couple and love how Jojo designed everything! I call her Jojo because I like to pretend we’re besties and she lets me call her Jojo. #shiplap

I recently did a posting about 10 things you NEED to know BEFORE you go to Magnolia Market, as well as a few other postings on our trip to Waco. Our son and family live just over an hour away so it was an easy trip and I know I’ll go back again. How neat to have arranged the tour and see a few things that others do not!

My favorite episode is from last season, when Chip ran through the wall on one of their fixer uppers. That was SO funny. The two of them just make me laugh every episode. I love that show! I also love seeing a little glimpse of their family life on every episode. As a mom of two, I think it adds such a real touch to the show.

Most fave Fixer Upper episode? …the one where Chip ate a cockroach. I lost it. Six out of seven children lost it. And the child that didn’t was not home at the time. And my husband – he got the heebee jeebees like I have never seen…ever. It still makes me shudder at the memory of seeing cockroach legs in his teeth. His teeth!!

We just watched one recently that was recap of all their favorite things from the various shows and he was shown eating a cockroach on that one – is that the one? he also chewed up a snakeskin!! It was SOOOO gross – my husband laughed/choked/coughed so hard I thought he was going to throw up! Still makes me laugh thinking about it!

My favorite episode was the Mid-century Modern (which is now featured as a local AirBnB residence!) where they converted the garage to living space. I adore the landscaping (succulent heavy) and the HUGE windows that lined the living room. Swoon…..

  54. Malinda Clay says

    April 6, 2016 at 2:46 PM

Wow just one? It would have to be the run down house that was transformed into a beautiful home for Clint Harp and his family. Their budget wasn’t as high as some and what they were able to do was just amazing. I hope to go sometime this year when visiting family. My planned visit last October had to be cancelled. Thanks for sharing your trip and the chance to win.

From season 1 I would vote for the fixer upper for their carpenter’s family. That was a labor of love and the end result was beautiful & inspirational (as always) and meant more because it was for them.

  63. Lisa Nelson says

    April 6, 2016 at 7:10 AM

The shotgun house!!!!! Was it the biggest? No. Most rich in detail? No. They took a house that looked as if you would “huff and puff” in it’s direction, that it would fall down and made it amazing! First having to pick it up and move it, then taking it and weaving a beautiful house around it’s history, all resulting in a house with the backbone and features of new construction keeping the charm and soul of an old home. It was an awesome transformation!

Oh man. I hope to make it someday! Loved all your pics!! Not sure I can pick just one episode…but I would have to say that indoor atrium one from the first season is still one of my favorites. I also really enjoyed Max Lucado’s daughters episode this season.

I love all the houses they have done but my fav is probably the one that had a lot of French country influence where they re-did the patio and added wrought iron.

I loved the episode from their first season (maybe episode 2?) when Jo agreed to add one cat to the family, but Chip’s visit to the animal shelter resulted in two adorable kitties and a promise to bring a dog home the next day. I totally sympathized with that moment! The $25,000 catastrophe house they were working on turned out beautiful too, especially the 3rd floor space for the family’s daughter and, of course, the kitchen. Loved it!

My fave would have to be the one where Chip did a running ninja jump into a wall. Not because of the episode itself, but because that was the moment my Grandma fell in love with them too! You are so lucky to have been on this trip, I have to go someday!

The episode in which they made over the grandpa’s house for the couple who had just gotten married. It had been her grandparent’s home and she had a lot of memories of family gatherings there, but it was vacant for many years and quite run down. They did an amazing job transforming it so that another family generation could share memories in that home.

Favorite Fixer Upper episode? How do you even pick just one? I love Joanna’s style, and Chip’s personality reminds me so much of my fiancee. I loved the sweet little house that Chip and Jo did in he early seasons for the couple that owned the coffee shop. I believe they called the house “Little House on the Prarie”. More recently I love the house that they did with Clint and his wife. The door is to die for on that house! I want to make a trip to Waco at some point, it seems like such a neat town. I always enjoy finding towns that have huge local movements.
