I am on a Mary Poppins kick lately. I had such a fun time creating the “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” printables last week, that I thought it would be fun to make a Spring wreath to go along with the printables. You know I love a good wreath.
And I have been having such an awesome time playing around with my new Cricut Explore machine, I created this new wreath with it! I took the printable kite that I created and saved it as an SVG file and then uploaded it into my Explore software online. Then all I had to do was resize it to fit the wood that I cut with my miter saw. I took a leftover piece of shelving that I use to make my giant signs and cut it into a kite shape.
Here’s how I made my “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” wreath:
Supplies:
Board for the kite (cut out using my electric saw) 9×11 inches
Vinyl for kite stencil
Two different colors of paint
36″ inch long piece of material by 4 inches for the kite tail
Wire
Wreath form
Fabric to wrap the wreath – approximately 1/2 yard.
paper to cut out for the paper bows – 1 sheet.
Ribbon to hang the wreath
Here’s how to make the wreath:
Cut the board into a kite shape — approximately 12 inches long by 9 inches wide.
I took the SVG file that I created and cut it out of vinyl for the wood kite.
Lay the vinyl on the kite and then peel off the top right and bottom left sides of the vinyl.
Paint those sections with one color of paint.
Then peel off the opposite sides, leaving the center vinyl in place.
When all four sections of the kite have been painted, peel off the middle strips, revealing either plain wood or your original painted color.
Once dry, sand the edges and add a little stain to the edges if you want.
Take your fabric for the tail, lay a piece of wire in the middle and hot glue the fabric closed.
Then take the tail and hot glue it onto the back of the wood kite.
Wrap sections of the tail every 6 inches or so with a 3-inch piece of wire.
Cut out the paper bows with your craft cutter.
Hot glue the paper bows onto each wrapped piece of the tail until you get to the end of the tail.
Wrap the wreath with your coordinating fabric.
Then hot glue the wooden kite to the side of the wreath and hot glue the tail in an “s” shape on the wreath.
Add some ribbon to the top.
And now you have a new whimsical Spring Wreath!
Note – your wreath might be a little lopsided due to the weight of the wooden kite on one side. If that is the case, just add a medium-sized glue dot to the back of the wreath and your door or wall and the glue dots should keep the wreath straight.
And here are a couple other Spring Wreaths I have made:
Have you made a wreath for Spring?

What a great idea! I love how this is versatile enough to stay on your door for more than a month. Instead of using wood for the kite I think I’ll try using foam core. We live in a tiny place without room for heavy duty power tools, but I can definitely wield a pair of scissors. 🙂
Thanks for sharing.
