Hey TT&J readers, it’s Holly from My Sister’s Suitcase. It’s been a while since I’ve been here so I’m glad to be back, just in time for my favorite season of the year, Fall. I try to get some of my autumn decor up before Halloween, so I can keep it up all season long. The other day I found these awesome mustard yellow balls in the floral department at Hobby Lobby, and as I was looking around the store I made the best discovery ever! Did you know they sell aged barn wood slats in bundles? I found this pack of six 28″ boards for $7.99! So I decided to try my hand at making a pallet barn wood sign for my Fall mantel.
I love how the mustard balls add texture and dimension to the sign, in the perfect color palette for Fall. Making the barn wood sign was so easy! Sometimes I am intimidated by any project that can’t be held together with hot glue, but I was surprised how simple it was. Here’s what you’ll need:
Materials
- Woodpile natural barn wood bundle (28″) from Hobby Lobby
- Woodpile natural bard wood bundle (14″) *optional
- hot glue
- nails & hammer
- Mustard floral balls from Hobby Lobby (I used 2 bunches for this sign)
Start by laying out your boards, face down, with the desired spacing in between slats:
On the back, use two of your 14″ boards to lay vertically and secure the other boards together. If you have some scrap wood laying around, that would work too! At this point, I used my hot glue gun to glue the 2 anchor boards down. This was basically just to hold the sign together before I used the nails to secure it.
I hammered one nail per board, so there were a total of 6 nails across the back on each side. Make sure your nails are the correct length to go into the boards, but not show through on the front side!
Once my barn wood sign was complete, I was ready to add the word Fall. Use chalk to write out your word on the sign:
Then start gluing the floral balls on to the sign with hot glue, following the chalk design.
That’s it! I love the finished result, and it’s a fun, whimsical addition to my Fall mantel:
