Hi friends!! We are almost done with our airbnb remodel! We turned the bottom floor of our home into a separate unit and we are getting ready to list it!

Think Outside the Box when Remodeling a Tiny Bathroom

There are a lot of opinions on how to make a bathroom seem larger. Most include lots of natural light and painting everything white. I did none of those things but I think my bathroom seems much larger than it was. I included some eye-catching elements that make the bathroom seem bigger and more interesting. I also added a couple of design elements that are optical illusions that make the space seem bigger.

Start with One Bathroom Focal Point

My starting point for this tiny bathroom was the mint hanging sink! It’s adorable AND by taking out the bathroom vanity and hanging the sink on the wall it opens up all of that space under the sink and makes the space seem much bigger!

Why You Should Take the Vanity Out of a Tiny Half Bath

If you have a tiny half bathroom, chances are that it doesn’t need all of the storage of a full-sized bathroom. Noone is going to be taking a shower in that space so you don’t need the storage of a traditional cabinet. Before we remodeled this space the cabinet took up almost the entire door space. When the door opened it almost hit the cabinet. You need toilet paper and you can store that in a beautiful basket in plain sight!

Add a Shelf in the Bath

We added a shelf under the hanging sink. It looks like it is holding the sink up but actually the sink is hanging on the wall without any support from the shelf. I just liked the look of having a shelf and this gives someone space if they want to bring something into the bathroom like makeup or hair tools to get ready in the space. It also is a place where I put a discrete roll of toilet paper and some room freshener for people to use.

Add a Mirror Shelf to the Half Bath

I added a little shelf mirror over the sink and the shelf is a place where I keep the hand soap and a little succulent. This makes washing your hands easier without having to take up space on the sink or shelf by the sides of the sink.

Add Vertical Beadboard to Make the Bath Seem Bigger

Our bathroom has very low ceilings. To give the bath the look of a taller room we installed beadboard on the lower half of the wall. The vertical lines bring your eye up toward the ceiling and by making the top of the beadboard reach higher than the midpoint of the wall it makes the room seem taller. We painted it white to make the space clean and airy looking.

Add a Bright Light to the Bath

I added a modern retro light to the top of the mirror. The fixture holds 3 LED lights and really brightens up the small space.

Add a Bright Element

Instead of leaving the whole room white, I installed bright and Spoonflower colorful butterfly peel-and-stick wallpaper. The wallpaper is bright and has a light background which keeps the bath light but also brings color and makes the bathroom cheerful. The wallpaper on the upper half of the bathroom walls also bring the eye up.

Install Bold Pattern Tile

You would think installing mostly black tile would make the bathroom seem darker but the opposite is true! The bold hex tile makes the bathroom stand out and emphasizes the open floor we achieved by taking the vanity out. I went with a black grout to to make the floor flow seamlessly and it will be easier to keep the grout clean.

Swap Out Your Toilet

Our plumbing in the space was so old (1891) that we had to order a special small toilet. But did you know that toilets come in different sizes? You can install a smaller toilet which flushes just as well as larger ones and takes up less space in a small room. I promise you will not be able to notice that it’s smaller. It just has a narrower tank that is taller so it fits against the wall and doesn’t stick out as much!

Install a New Bathroom Door

We took the old flat panel door and installed a new panel door and retro-looking doorknob. The old doorway was also super low. You had to duck your head under the doorway to get inside of the bathroom which also made it seem smaller and cave-like. By opening up the doorway and installing a new door and doorknob, it makes the space seem bigger and it flows better by matching the rest of the doors in the space!
