I shared our first project as a married couple last week – my new step-daughter’s black and white bedroom. She’s so happy to have a place all her own in our home. We asked her what her favorite colors were and designed the room around her colors – black, white and pink.

I partnered with one of my favorite sites – Shutterfly.com to design the items in her room. I designed a custom reversible duvet, pillows, pillow shams and framed canvases to create a coordinating room.

I promised to share the free printables with YOU, in case you want to use the designs to create items for YOUR home.

Black and White Kids Bedroom Ideas and Printables

I got married last week. It was the PERFECT day!! We are SO excited about our new family. One of our top priorities has been to make all of our kids feel comfortable in our new home environment.

My new husband has a 9-year-old daughter and we thought it would be nice to make a special room for her so she feels welcomed and loved. We turned a guest room into a special room just for her. I’ve been a Shutterfly ambassador in the past and I thought it would be SO fun to create some custom images and have them printed using the awesome items available in Shutterfly’s Home Decor collection.

Black and White Kids Bedroom Ideas and Printables

I asked my soon-to-be stepdaughter what her favorite colors were and she said black and white and pink. I was excited because I LOVE black and white. It’s so simple but striking. It also goes with almost ANY color. So if she wants to change the accent color from pink to something else in the future it will be very easy to do, while leaving the main black and white colors.  I also love stripes and hearts since they are simple. I thought the two would go well together. I added a cactus for fun and an arrow.

When you first walk in the room you will notice the black and white striped duvet. I love that Shutterfly lets you add a coordinating pattern to the other side, too. So if she gets tired of the stripes, she can flip it over and there is another black and white pattern on the other side. Another thing I love about Shutterfly’s duvet is that the enclosure is a sleek, hidden zipper. I’ve had duvet covers in the past that tie and sometimes the insert will slip out and it looks messy. So I was very excited about the zipper. It was so easy to insert the duvet inside and zip it up.

Speaking of zippers, Shutterfly’s pillows also have hidden zippers and the covers are removable which makes them easy to wash and keeps the pillow clean. I made a few different pillow covers. I also made the pillows reversible, with coordinating patterns on the back. They can be flipped over for a completely different look which is fun! I ordered a few different sizes which I think look nice all together on the bed.

I made a couple custom quotes and had them printed on pillow shams. It’s kind of a nice surprise for when my step-daughter climbs in bed. She can see the uplifting quotes!

I put a soft fuzzy chair in the corner of the room. It will be a place where she can have a quiet moment or read a book. I added a black and white heart pillow to the chair and I love the way it looks!

One of my favorite items that you can create through Shutterfly are their framed canvases. I love canvases and the frame takes it up even farther in terms of style. I think the wood frame gives the canvases a really modern look. You can order them in different finishes. I love white so I specified white when I created them online. I ordered a larger square canvas to go over her bed and two smaller canvases to be grouped by the side of the bed.

We opted to not have a headboard in the room; instead we added two fluffy pillows to the back and the big canvas at the top. I think it’s a nice alternative to a headboard, especially if you have a small room like we do here.

I echoed the black and white stripes in the rug. I always like to have a rug in a room. I think it adds interest and can add a lot to the overall look.

One Hour Kids Closet Transformation

I am getting married in less than a month! There has been so much to do and we are so excited! Our most important focus and goal has been making things comfortable for our new blended family. One thing we have been working on is changing the guest room in our home into a bedroom for my fiancee’s 9-year-old daughter. We want to make a special place for her in our home so she knows how welcome she is. As we have been making this special space for her, one of the things we have wanted to do was customize the closet in that room for her. So when Rubbermaid contacted me about trying out their Rubbermaid ® HomeFree Series – I was very excited. Previously this space was a place was a storage area and was pretty messy! LOL.

It already had some shelving so I was thrilled when I saw that Rubbermaid ® HomeFree Series is so customizable and easy to use. Rubbermaid ® HomeFree Series is a SUPER easy, kit-based closet system and it unique telescoping rods and shelves so it can fit in any space and you don’t have to cut anything!

I went over to my Lowes store to check it out. The Rubbermaid ® HomeFree Series is in the closet organizing section of the store and the kits are easy to find. I also was very impressed with all of the add-ons for the system – like drawers, shelves and accessories. I knew it would be perfect for our odd-spaced closet.

I used Rubbermaid’s Online Closet Design Tool to map out my space and see what kit and accessories would work for our space.

Based on the design tool we saw that the Rubbermaid ® HomeFree Series 3-6 foot kit would work. We wanted to use the closet for all of my step-daughter’s clothes, we also purchased some Rubbermaid ® HomeFree Series drawers that are designed to add onto the main kit.

Then we came home and got to work. After we cleaned out the closet, we got the pieces out of the kit that we needed and in FOUR easy steps we had a new closet that she will love! Here’s what we did.

1. We measured how high we wanted the tallest shelf and where the long rails would go in the closet. To ultilize the Rubbermaid ® HomeFree Series design, the rails needed to be 22 inches apart so that the drawers we purchased would work. With the Rubbermaid ® HomeFree Series system you don’t have to drill the rails into studs and I LOVED that. Instead there are sturdy anchors you can use if you don’t have studs that will work inside your wall. You drill a hole and put the unique drywall anchors inside and they hold the screw in place. This made it really easy to put the rails where we wanted and it made the closet much more visually appealing. 
2. We hung the vertical rails and top rail.
3. Then we hung the shelves and rods. The shelves and rods are telescoping so there is no cutting. All we had to do was layer the shelves together and telescope them to the right width. Then the brackets had a little lever and it holds the shelves securely. We did the same thing with the clothes rods. 
4. The last thing we did was install the drawers. The drawers come pretty much ready to go in the package. All we had to do was attach the included brackets onto the sliding rails on the drawer frame and then put the brackets into the vertical rails and drop the basket inside the frame. Easy.

Within an hour we had a closet that will work great for my fiancee’s nine year old daughter. She has two rails to hang her clothes, shelves for her toys and books and drawers for clothes that are awkward to hang like underwear, socks and pajamas.

I added a wire clothes hamper that goes along with the look of her new shelves. We can’t wait to see her face when she sees her new closet!!

I’m so excited to be part of the 2014 Make it Fun Team with FloraCraft!

FloraCraft has all kinds of fun foam wreath forms, balls, cones and more! This month they challenged the team to craft something using these foam heads. LOL!!!

I was going to make something Halloween themed, but then I thought they might be fun to use as hat stands in Ella’s room. She has a couple hats she loves.

Here’s how to make these Inspirational Chalkboard Hat Displays:

1. Paint the heads with chalkboard paint.

2. Mount them on wood plaques. I made one a little taller than the other by stacking two of the wood plaques and then placing the head on top.

3. Use chalkboard pens to write quotes on the heads. I chose two Audrey Hepburn quotes:

Happy girls are the prettiest girls

The beauty of a woman is reflected in her soul

4. Add some flowers for color and interest.

Each month we will doing a project. I’m excited to see what we’ll be making next month!

We had such a fun time creating our Tween Hangout Room, andHannah decided she wanted a room that was similar.

The black and white decor and pops of color are so fun for a teen!! I was able to use the same beautiful Waverly fabric for this room as the hangout room.

I think the colors are so pretty! Here are some of the projects I created for this Tween room:

I created an upholstered headboard from a piece of plywood. I cut out the corners with a jigsaw and wrapped it in batting and then stapled the Well Rounded Licorice material onto the plywood. I sewed a duvet cover–I love this material! And made some simple pillows. I also upholstered a cushion on a chair for the room. And I made some simple panel curtains from the same fabric as the headboard!

And added wallpaper to a desk for a little makeup station/workstation for the room! Hannah just loves her new room!! Thanks, Waverly, for the beautiful fabrics for the room!!

And it’s fun that it matches the Tween Hang Out Room!

A few of my favorite things:

These beds are so cute and they are sturdy! They are made out of real wood and they all come with a matching headboard and footboard — in a variety of sharp-looking styles.

The twin and full-sized beds feature a large-scale backlit panel where you can change the images so when your child grows and changes interests… these beds grow with them!  You can interchange these images in a matter of seconds!

The bed itself has a bright, LED-lit headboard — bright enough to read by! The included remote is cool — you can use it not only to turn the light on and off, but also to adjust the brightness and set a sleep timer – so it automatically turns off after, say, 30 minutes. So — I really wanted to do the reveal on Hannah’s room today. But it snowed on Wednesday and Thursday and I had such a hard time getting good pictures of the room. I really need to take a photography class. Plus, Hannah has been home with the stomach flu (poor girl).

The room turned out so cute. And for a last minute project I am really happy with it. We pretty much took what we already had, plus scavenged things from other rooms in the house for the project. We did buy new bedding from Target and a few odds and ends from Hobby Lobby. She really wanted something neutral and then we added bright accents that are easily changed out.

Here is Hannah’s favorite part of the room. She has always wanted a desk in her room. It’s a place that is all her own. Somewhere she can do homework, create, do her makeup or hair and all of the projects that a tween loves to do!! And since she started middle school, she has had to get more organized with her homework. So this little space really does help her keep on top of things.

This is how we created her own little Tween Command Center.

I took one of Scrapbox’s Work Top’s – which was in my craft room and is supposed to be an organizer that goes over another work surface, and I attached some cool metal legs with wheels from Ikea.

Now Hannah has a cool desk with some compartments to keep all of her little odds and ends. Craft supplies, extra glasses, and little mementos she can see through the clear compartments.

I made a charging station. I took a drawer from Hobby Lobby and drilled three holes in the back for cords. Hannah borrows our Mac laptop to work on school assignments. She also can charge her phone, her gameboy, ipod, Kindle and whatever other electronics in this drawer. I love that it keeps everything together and out of the way.

Another thing we did was we made some little magnet boards. I took some unfinished wood plaques from Hobby Lobby, painted them and then cut some pieces of sheet metal. I attached the sheet metal with adhesive and now she has a place to keep pictures or other treasures.

I also found a scrolly mirror so Hannah can see herself to apply makeup or do her hair at her little desk.

I saw this print from Finny and Zook — and I just had to order it. Hannah is a little self-conscious about her freckles and I love the positive message this gives her. I love Hannah’s freckles.

I also spray painted a couple of hooks with little knobs to the wall. She can hang a favorite necklace or bracelet there.

We used a little Target stool I bought many years ago as a chair for her little space. I love that we can tuck it under the desk and out of the way. Her room isn’t super huge, and keeping things simple makes the space seem bigger than it is.

I love how happy Hannah is with her room update. I am so glad we started this project “on a whim”. Sometimes those projects are the most rewarding.

I think one of Ikea’s top seller must be their UNG frame. It’s so pretty with it’s scrolly silhouette. And I have seen so many amazing ways to use it in home decor.

I bought one a few months ago, knowing that I would find a use for it eventually. And when we started Hannah’s “spur-of-the-moment” room makeover this weekend, I knew I wanted to use it in her room. It’s perfect for a girls room.

Hannah loved to collect things, so I thought it would be great to make a little bulletin board for her to display treasures. And she had a wall that was the perfect size – yay!!

Here’s what we did to transform the plain black Ikea UNG frame into a colorful bulletin board:

• The first thing we did was we took out the mirror and spray painted the frame a bright pink that matches her new chandelier color. Super easy. I LOVE spray paint!!

• Then we took the mirror and attached some cork board tiles. Hannah and I traced the mirror image on the tiles and then but them out with scissors. We left about 1/4″ along the edges of the mirror so it would fit in the frame easier. The cork tiles came with double-sided sticky mounts. We attached them to the cork and the mirror to hold the cork in place.

• Then we added a layer of batting to the top of the cork board.

• The next thing we did was we traced the mirror on the fabric we wanted to use, leaving about 3 inches of fabric on all sides of the mirror.

• We wrapped the fabric around the mirror/cork, taping the material on the back to secure it. As we went around the oval, we pulled the material taught.

• Then we attached the ribbon trim. We cut lengths and criss-crossed them on the fabric, securing them in the back with mailing tape.

• Once the ribbon was attached, we flipped the oval over and fitted it inside the painted frame.

Then we hung it up and added some of Hannah’s favorite things.

Now the colorful bulletin board is the first thing you see when you come in the room. And I love that the bright color instantly adds a happy and friendly vibe to Hannah’s new room. Yay!! The infinity scarf and pin are from the Nest of Posies Shop – one of my favorite places!

I am working on a new cushion for her window seat today, plus a couple little projects to make the room complete. We are so excited to show you the whole room reveal soon!!
