Make Over Your Closets with Fabric Wallpaper

I have a bad habit shoving everything in my closets and then never going through them and cleaning them out. One of my goals this year is to get more organized all the way through my home – especially in places that people don’t usually see like drawers, closets and even my garage. I was thinking about this goal and I thought what if I tried to make my closets beautiful? Then I would want to keep them clean and even show them off! We wallpaper walls and even rooms in our home to bring more color in. I loved the idea of creating the look of wallpaper in my closets without the work of actually wallpapering them. I thought using fabric would be the perfect solution.

I created “faux” wallpaper panels with inexpensive foam board and fabric from fabric.com. I’ve been ordering fabric through fabric.com for years. I think the first time I did was when I discovered chevron for the first time about 7 years ago. Ever since then they have been a wonderful source for on-trend fabric and I love it because it comes right to my door. So easy!

So here is a way to make your closets beautiful with the look of wallpaper at a fraction of the price. PLUS, it’s so easy to change out. All I have to do is take the panels out and switch out the fabric whenever I want a different look.

Here’s how I made the panels:

  • Measure your wall.
  • For these shelves I measured each of the openings and sketched out the dimensions.
  • Then I measured out each of the wall dimensions on the foam board. Since the foam board was 28 inches wide and one of my closets was 31 inches wide I had to use two boards. I hot glued the boards together.
  • When I finished cutting out each of the foam panels, I took them up to the closets to make sure they fit into the spaces before I wrapped them in fabric. This way I could be sure they were going to fit and could adjust them by cutting them down a little to make them the perfect size.
  • Then I laid the foam boards onto the fabric and cut the fabric to fit. I left 2 inches around all of the edges so I could fold the fabric around the boards.
  • I wrapped the fabric around the boards and hot glued the fabric onto the backs of all of the boards.
  • Then I popped the boards onto back walls of the closets and organized the shelves.

The fabric I used is  Anderson Check Snowy Fabric.

I have a coordinating fabric Anderson Canopy Snowy Fabric that I am using to create a coordinating project. I can’t wait to share it with you!

I went through all of our sheets and towels and blankets and donated what we don’t use. I put the queen sheets in one bin, the king sheets in another. Blankets in a basket at the bottom. I found inexpensive bins and put washcloths in one, hand towels in another. I hung up our ironing board and iron with an over-the-door hook.

I also organized my other, smaller cleaning closet. I made matching panels for that closet. I organized the cleaning supplies and hung up the mops using an over-the-door hook. Everything feels so clean!

I am in the process of making over my master bedroom closet. The space doesn’t have a door so every time I go from my bedroom to my bathroom I pass through the closet. I love the idea of making one of the walls over with a fabric background.

I can’t wait to show you how that space looks when I am done!

If you have a large wall you can also use something like plywood and wrap it in fabric like I did in the open shelves at my old house:

wrap plywood with fabric and back shelves for a wallpaper look without the price and effort of wallpaper.

Also — I have another closet organization project coming up with a coordinating fabric that will make my closets even prettier!!

Now instead of cringing every time anyone opens my closets, I want to show them off!!

fabric.com is a great resource for on-trend fabrics at affordable prices
