Joy to the world mantel – colorful mantel ideas. Create colorful, handmade elements for a bright and whimsical mantel this holiday season. Handmade embroidery hoop sayings and giant sign DIY tutorials.
How to Make a Themed Holiday Mantel
I love doing a different theme mantel each year. Creating handmade DIY’s for holidays are one of my favorite things. This year I created embroidery hoop wreaths with pennants inside that say – Joy to the World. I hung the embroidery hoops on colorful ribbon suspended from a big branch above my mantel.
On the mantel itself I arranged bright bottle-brush trees and little white houses. I love that the little houses light up at night with built-in candles. It’s so warm and inviting.
Make a GIANT Holiday Sign
Another project I love making are GIANT signs. This year I added a bit of wood trim to the top and bottom of the sign. And instead of painting the word on the sign as I usually do, I added industrial letters and created an O out of a bigger embroidery hoop. I love the way the 3D elements on the giant sign look! Make a GIANT Joy Sign.
Add Whimsical Elements
I found a spindle reindeer and added it in front of the fireplace. I love combining COLOR and wood together.
On my tree I create wood and colorful snowflake ornaments. They are simple but bright. Scandinavian Snowflake Ornament Tutorial.
Incorporate Beloved Items
Our little sled is an element that I use every year in some way. This year I have it leaning against the side of the mantel with a bright wreath on top. Other years I’ve piled presents on top of it and arranged it in front of the tree. It’s one of my favorite things to use each year !
Make Holiday Garlands
I also LOVE garlands! Paper garlands are one of the easiest ways to decorate for ANY occasion – especially at the holidays. And this year I have a new tool in my line that makes PENNANTS! It’s called the Pennant Punch Board. You can make three different shapes of pennants AND in 30 different sizes. The tool has everything you need built into it. There are measurements for different sized pennants, as well as guides. The cutting tool has a place in the center of the punch board. You just take it out of its slot and then run it along the guides. And at the top of the punch board is a hold punch. SO clever!! It’s 40% right now!
Banner Punchboard
I made 3D trees and ran them along the top of the mantel. Under the trees are GIANT white pom poms and then a big colorful felted ball garland. I love that each garland has a different texture!
A few present round out our JOY TO THE WORLD MANTEL! I love the way it looks at night with the fireplace on and the little houses all lit up!

Hi Kelly!
I found the Merry Christmas banner at World Market. It was too long for my mantel so I took the letters off and hot glued them onto a ribbon 🙂
