Holiday Project — Painted Glass Advent Calendar and Pom Pom Tree

Advent calendars are one of our favorite Holiday family traditions — I love the meaning  behind them and the JOY they bring my kids. Today I’m sharing this Ornament Advent Calendar!

So when Plaid sent me some of their new Martha Stewart  paints and stencils in the mail, I thought it might be fun to make some hand-painted ornaments as an advent calendar. And I thought the little beadboard display area that we created in our family room would be the perfect place to display this new advent calendar.

I made a tree out of little mini pom pom trim and big yarn pom poms for the topper. And then I painted some ornaments for the advent days and some bigger ornaments too!!

Here’s how I made the Advent Tree:

Martha Stewart and Plaid have a new line of adhesive and silk-screening stencils.  It makes stenciling SO much easier. And the adhesive is a little magical. You can use it over and over. I really don’t understand how it works, but you can get it wet and it is still sticky. If you are stenciling something curved, this adhesive makes all of the difference.

I took some clear ornaments in three different sizes.

I used the smallest size for the advent ornaments. I applied the adhesive number on each ornaments and used the “pouncer” tool to apply the paint. Then while the paint was still wet, I peeled the stencil off of the ornament and let the ornament dry.

For some of the bigger ornaments and a few of the smaller ornaments, I poured a little of the pearl glass paint inside the ornaments, along with the same amount of the Martha Stewart glitter paint medium. Then I put my thumb over the top of the ornament and shook the ornament until the entire surface inside the ornament was covered with the paint/glitter combo. Then I let it dry overnight. The glitter medium really makes the ornament sparkle.

To create the pom pom tree — I used Command Strip mini hooks on my beadboard background. I put one on each side of the tree where the branches would be and then I ran the mini pom pom trim to create a tree shape. And then I hung the advent ornaments on the tree with some baker’s twine. The bigger ornaments I hung with a mini command strip.

The pom pom tree might also be a good idea for someone that doesn’t have room for a traditional tree, or if you have ornaments you want to display and show off.

I also stenciled the same numbers on the packages I put together for my kids’12-days-of-Christmas packages, so they coordinate.

Ella is SO excited to open the packages this year. You can have your kids either add an ornament each day, or take one off each day until Christmas.

      I attached the Pom Pom ribbon and the bigger ornaments with command mini strips. When I’m done ill just pull them off 🙂
