Have Your Friends Over for a Book Club Party
I love an excuse to have my friends over for a get-together! One of my favorite movies this year was Book Club! I saw it twice in the theater — once with my BFF and once with my mom! I love that it is movie about four friends who form a book club that develops into a friendship where they support each other no matter what. It also shows that women can have dreams and desires later in life, which is something I absolutely support.
About the movie Book Club
Book Club is about four friends — Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. Diane (Diane Keaton) is recently widowed after 40 years of marriage. Vivian (Jane Fonda) is a maverick hotel businesswoman who has never been married and enjoys her men with no strings attached. Sharon (Candice Bergen) is still hung up on her husband 12 years after her divorce. Carol’s (Mary Steenburgen) 35 year old marriage is going through a slump. The actresses in this movie are all amazing in their own rights. I love the sense of friendship they convey in their roles. It is such an empowering movie about women and embracing getting older. Book Club is available right now. The Blu-Ray release includes hilarious bonus content, like the making of the film, deleted scenes, and more!!
Create the Perfect Book Club Party
We celebrated the other night. I had my BFF and a couple friends over for a fun girls’ night in. We laughed, ate yummy snacks, watched Book Club and celebrated being friends. It was awesome! I made some decadent vanilla cupcakes with strawberry buttercream frosting and topped them with tiny chocolate edible books! They were so cute!

Decadent Vanilla Cupcakes with Strawberry Buttercream Frosting
Here’s the recipe for Decadent Vanilla Cupcakes with Strawberry Buttercream Frosting:
Cakes Baked in Mugs
I baked my cakes inside of oven-proof mugs. I know there are a lot of microwave cake-in-a-mug recipes but those recipes you have to serve the cake right away. I wanted to bake mine inside of mugs and let them cool. Then I frosted them and they didn’t have to be eaten right away. This type of recipe is easier for a party,
Decadent Vanilla Cupcakes with Strawberry Buttercream Frosting
Purchase your copy of Book Club and invite your girlfriends over for a girls' night in with delicious strawberry cupcakes with edible chocolate book topper
Ingredients
- 1 cup salted butter, room temperature
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar (or splenda naturals)
- 4 eggs, room temperature
- 1 3/4 t. vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups vanilla yogurt
- 3 cups flour
- 1/3 t. baking soda
- 2 1/2 t. baking powder
Strawberry Buttercream Frosting
- 2 cups salted butter
- 7 cups powdered sugar
- 1 1/3 T. milk
- 1 T. vanilla extract
- 8 medium strawberries, chopped and crushed
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Line two 12-count muffin tins with cupcake liners. If you are going to make your cupcakes inside of oven-proof mugs, this recipe will make enough for 6 standard coffee cups and 6 regular sized cupcakes. Spray the inside of the coffee cups with non-stick spray and set coffee cups on a baking sheet.
-
Cream butter and sugar in an electric mixer for 4 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla, vanilla yogurt, baking powder and baking soda.
-
Divide batter into two sections. Pour the first section of batter into the six coffee cups, filling them until about 2/3 way full.
-
Then take the second section of batter and pour it into the remaining cupcake liners.
-
Bake the cupcakes for 20 minutes or until a toothpick poked in comes out clean. Bake the coffee mugs for 30-40 minutes. Baking time will depend on the type of coffee cup you use. So check them at 30 minutes and continue checking every 5 minutes until a toothpick poked into the coffee mug cupcake mixture comes out clean.
-
Let cupcakes and coffee cup cakes cool on a baking sheet until completely cooled. Then put frosting in a piping sleeve and add frosting. Once frosting is set, add chocolate toppers.
Strawberry Buttercream Frosting
-
Put softened butter into an electric mixer, beat on medium speed for 3 minutes or until smooth and creamy.
-
Add powdered sugar one cup at a time until incorporated. Then add vanilla extract and strawberries and mix until incorporated. Add more powdered sugar if needed until you have a very thick consistency. You want the frosting to be very thick so that the chocolate books will stay and not make the frosting collapse.
Make Edible Chocolate Book Toppers
Edible Chocolate Books have been on the internet for awhile. I am not sure who originally came up with this idea. If you know the original source, let me know and I will be sure to give that person credit. It’s such a cute idea! And here is how to make these tiny chocolate edible books:
Supplies:
1 package Hershey’s Foil-wrapped Nugget chocolates
An old book
1 Sheet cardstock
Hot glue gun
Directions:
- Each book will use two Hershey’s nugget chocolates
- Put two Hershey’s nugget chocolates side by side.
- Cut out a piece of cardstock a little bigger than the two chocolates.
- Use that piece of cardstock as a template for the rest of the books you will make.
- Hot glue the two Hershey’s nugget chocolates to each cardstock square.
- Cut book pages into squares that are the size of the two Hershey’s nugget chocolates. Fold in half.
- Hot glue the book page into the middle of the two Hershey’s nugget candies, creating the look of an open book with pages open.
Make Finger Food
I also made some other foods that we nibbled on while we watched the movie!
