Make a Whimsical Tree Garland out of old Sweaters {Christmas Tutorial}

I’m over-the-top, “kid in a candy shop” excited about being with you all today.  Just a tid bit about me…I am a wife, a mom, and a lover of all things fabric.  I also have a sweet tooth that gets me into trouble after 9 p.m.
I’m joining you today to share with you a tutorial for whimsical Christmas tree garland.  If you’ve seen some of my posts, then you know I’m a huge fan of upcycling.  These little Christmas trees were made from an old sweater!

To make whimsical Christmas tree garland you will need…

Materials
old sweater
needle
thread
baker’s twine
felt
pom poms
wine corks {one cork per four trees}
I found this old sweater at the thrift store for a whopping $2.60.  After a good washing she was ready to go!
To achieve the the stacked Christmas tree effect, I created several circles using Word.
Once I had my circles cut out, I started tracing them onto a sleeve of the sweater.

 

I did a bunch of the same size first and then moved up the latter to the smaller circles.

 

Here is my first tree, stacked and ready for thread.  Double up the thread on your needle and tie a knot at the end.

 

If your sweater is “holy” like mine, reinforce the bottom with a little felt.  Take your needle and thread and pull it through a couple of times on the first circle.

 

Okay, now take each circle and start to layer from big to small.  To get the whimsical effect, space out each circle just enough to let them bend and twist.
 Cut the thread from the needle and leave enough room to tie a knot around the baker’s twine.  Now, take your baker’s twine and place it on dop of the thread.

 

Tie a knot around the thread BUT make sure not to pull too tight, or you’ll pinch all your circles together.

Now cut your wine cork using a knife with a serrated edge {I used a bread knife}.  Glue to the bottom of the tree.
