12 Ways to Use Scallop Molding to Add Charm to Your Home

I’ve always had a soft spot for scallops — the charming curves, the elegance, and the way they add a little extra detail wherever they go. So when I saw that Hobby Lobby had the perfect scallop molding, I was instantly smitten. I couldn’t resist picking up every piece I could get my hands on, and I’ve been adding it to our 1891 cottage home ever since.

Today, I want to share several creative ways you can incorporate scallop molding into your own space, whether you’re looking for a subtle touch or a show-stopping detail.
Scallop Molding in the Dining Room

One of the first places I used scallop molding was in our dining room. I decided to go bold by painting the lower half of the wall a warm caramel color. Above that, I added wallpaper, and to tie it all together, I used Hobby Lobby’s scallop molding, which I painted the same warm caramel color as the lower wall. The result is a room that feels cozy, inviting, and full of charm. The scallop molding not only adds architectural interest but also softens the lines of the space, making it feel even more timeless. It’s a small detail that has such a big impact. I love the way it looks with our Bordeaux Arched Wall Mirror!

DIY Plate Rack with Scallop Molding

Another project that I have been dreaming of for SIX years was creating a DIY plate rack to showcase my collection of beautiful plates. I finally made it happen — and of course, I used scallop molding to elevate the look. The scallop trim creates a delicate edge along the top of the rack, bringing a touch of softness and character to the space. It’s the perfect way to display plates while adding a little extra flair to the kitchen or dining room.

Adding Scallop Trim to a Mantel

A mantel is a natural focal point in any room, and adding scallop trim to it can give it a charming, custom feel. Whether your mantel is traditional, modern, or somewhere in between, scallop molding works beautifully to create a delicate, but distinct, frame around the fireplace. It brings attention to the mantel while maintaining an inviting, lighthearted look. You can either add it around the edge of the mantel or across the top or bottom for a cohesive design.
Scallop Molding for a Picture Frame with Mitered Edges

If you’re looking to add a unique touch to a picture frame, scallop molding is a perfect choice. By using mitered edges, you can create a custom frame that has a timeless, sophisticated feel. This works especially well for vintage photos or artwork that you want to highlight in your home. The curves of the scallop trim add an elegant detail, drawing the eye and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the framed piece.

Scallop Trim for Floating Shelves

We have floating shelves in both our family room and breakfast dining nook, and I’ve been thinking about adding scallop trim to give them a little “glow up.” Scallop molding would add a layer of interest to the shelves, softening the lines and creating a cohesive look with the rest of the room. You can either add the trim to the front edge of the shelf or place it underneath the shelf to create a more pronounced effect. Either way, scallops are sure to elevate your shelves.
Scallop Trim for Furniture

Adding scallop trim to furniture like nightstands, dressers, or cabinets is an easy way to upgrade the look of your pieces without needing a full makeover. I love how a simple piece of scallop trim can instantly transform a piece of furniture, adding an element of warmth and elegance. Whether you add it to the edges of the drawers, around the bottom of the cabinet, or as a decorative detail on the front, the scallops will give your furniture a unique, vintage-inspired charm.
Scallop Molding as a Window Treatment

Windows are an often-overlooked space in terms of design, but they offer a great opportunity to add decorative details. Scallop trim works beautifully as a way to frame a window, giving it an extra touch of charm. You can place the molding along the top or bottom of the window frame, or even both! Adding scallops will soften the sharp lines of the window and make the space feel cozy and inviting. It’s a small change that makes a huge difference.
Cabinet Doors

Transforming plain cabinet doors into something more unique is a breeze with scallop molding. This works especially well for kitchen or bathroom cabinets that could use a little character. Add the scallop trim along the top or bottom edges of the cabinet doors for a touch of elegance and charm. It’s a simple way to customize the look of your cabinets without replacing them entirely.
Baseboards

Baseboards are another spot in your home that can be elevated with the addition of scallop molding. If you want to add a touch of softness to the room, scallop trim is a perfect choice. It works particularly well in more traditional spaces, but can also add a little personality to modern rooms. It’s a beautiful way to create a finished look for the lower walls and gives the room a polished, charming vibe.
Door Frames

Adding scallop trim to door frames can instantly make your space feel more custom. It’s a great way to create a delicate, feminine look or bring a vintage-inspired detail to your home. The scallops frame the door beautifully, drawing attention to the architectural features of your space. This is especially lovely in bedrooms, entryways, or bathrooms.
Staircases

If you want to add some personality to your staircase, scallop molding can be a great option. It works wonderfully along the railing or around the base of the stairs to add an elegant detail that makes the space feel unique. The curves of the scallops contrast beautifully with the straight lines of a staircase, creating an eye-catching and charming effect.
Decorative Border on a Wall or Corner

If you want to add a bit of detail to a wall or corner without going overboard, scallop molding can be used as a decorative border. This works particularly well around the top of a wall or the edge of a ceiling. It’s a subtle way to add texture and interest to a space without overwhelming the room.
Scallop Trim in Unexpected Places

Finally, one of the best things about scallop trim is its versatility. You can add it to unexpected places in your home, like around light fixtures, the edges of mirrors, or even along the tops of bookshelves. Get creative with how you use it, and don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Scallop molding can work just about anywhere — the key is to have fun with it and let your creativity guide you.
