It’s easy for kids to get caught up in the receiving element of the holidays. I love the idea of showing my kids that Christmas is all about GIVING too. That’s why I was excited to hear about a new holiday tradition that shows kids at an early age how to be kind and help others – North Pole Ninjas.

You may not know that Santa has a team of special elves, selected for their ability to help carry out top-secret missions that are all about helping, giving, caring, and listening. Anyone who receives this box is called upon to help carry out those top secret missions with a bit of stealth and an open heart. The gorgeously illustrated picture book retells the ancient legend the North Pole Ninjas use for new recruits. After reading the book, readers are given their own Ninja missions to carry out: 50 special tasks packed in a special envelope. Complete with a plush and huggable “sensei” to guide Ninjas on their journey, this is the perfect antidote to worrying about whether you’ve been naughty or nice.

I am truly excited about this new tradition for our family. I love the idea of spreading kindness with my kids throughout the holidays. Doing something for others is such a great feeling. The 50 special tasks are all so great. Here are a few of my favorites that will be doing as a family this year:

  • No. 6 – Make super top secret holiday ornaments for a neighbor and leave them on their porch or doorstep.
  • No. 45 – On garbage day, then the big truck has finished it’s job, bring your neighbors’ empty cans back to their driveways.
  • No. 19 – Bring a plate of treats to your local fire station. The firefighters work hard and will happily gobble them up.

I created a little mailbox where my kids can get pick their North Pole Ninja missions and keep the envelope that they keep the completed missions to be returned on Christmas Eve.

    This is AMAZING we try to encourage kindness EVERYDAY! We have an amazing dojo that we go to 3-4 times a week that also instills this into each and every student. I would ❤️ To share these with the dojo! I hope I get picked!

    I love this idea! My grandchildren are always looking for ways to be kind to others. We collect clothing and household goods for families in need, and ring the Salvation Army bell. They recently asked me for more giving ideas, this would be a perfect answer!

    My classroom theme is Ninjas. I have a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and teach our oaths and tenents as the rules in the class. I would love to have this tradition in my classroom. It is perfect.

    I love this idea! Does the ninja hide every night or how does it work? How did you present it to your kids? Did it appear on your doorstep? So they get to pick what acts they do then mail them back? Is the elf coming to your house too or are is just the sensi?

    I have done the elf for the last few years but I haven’t felt like it has made the Christmas spirit stronger. I LOVE this idea. Christmas is about what you do for others and being Christ-like. I want my son to grow up in a world where he sees kindness in those around him and shows that same kindness in return. I definitely want this!

    I am so excited about this book! Thanks for sharing this idea. I have been using Elf in the Shelf in my first grade classroom (which is great) but most of the students have an elf at home so it’s a bit redundant! I am SO excited to have a ninja elf instead! A fresh and new idea! Our school is participating in a kindness campaign called, Kindness Ninjas, so this will be perfect!!!     I’ve been looking for a new tradition to replace our Elf on the Shelf. This is such a great idea! My boys are 21, 19, and 11. Which sounds crazy, but they love any type of fun tradition to keep the spirit of Christmas in our home.
