Make a Fall Leaf Pillow in Minutes!

Hello, everyone! Amy here from Positively Splendid. I am so glad to be back here at Jen’s place to share a super quick and easy project to add a splash of fall to your home decor with this leaf pillow!

To me, there is no better way to quickly update the feel of a space than by adding a few new throw pillows. The great thing about pillows is that they can be DIY’ed for pennies on the dollar of what you would spend to buy them pre-made from your favorite home decor stores, and they can be whipped up in just a matter of minutes. The Fall Leaf Pillow I’m sharing today uses a felt cut-out from the dollar store to easily add some graphic detail. Let me show you how to make one of your own!

For this project, you will need…

  • Felt fall leaf decoration (I purchased mine at the dollar store)
  • 18″ pillow insert
  • (1) 18×18″ piece of white fabric
  • (2) 12×18″ pieces of coordinating fabric (I used a yellow and white polkadot)
  • Coordinating thread

Pin the felt leaf decoration to the 18″ white square piece…

…and then stitch all around the perimeter of the shape to affix it to the pillow front.

Apply a narrow hem to one of the long edges of each of the 12×18″ fabric pieces. (To do this, fold under the edge 1/4″; press. Fold under another 1/4″, press and stitch.)

Lay the pillow front face up on a work surface. Place one of the rectangle pieces face down on the pillow front piece, aligning the top corners of one of the back rectangle pieces with the top corners of the pillow front piece, so that the hemmed edge of the rectangle piece runs through the center of the pillow front piece. Align the remaining rectangle piece in the same manner along the bottom edge of the pillow front piece. Pin. Using a 1/2″ seam allowance, stitch around the perimeter of the pillow, sewing through all layers. Clip the corners, turn the cover right-side out, and slip the pillow form inside. You are finished!

For more detailed instructions and a helpful diagram for how to assemble this type of envelope-back pillow, be sure to check out my Envelope-Back Pillow How-To Guide.

This is a pillow that will make a dynamic fall statement in your home…

…and the fact that it is such a breeze to put together can be our little secret. 🙂

Note: Because the dye in the leaf decoration might bleed in the wash, I recommend only spot cleaning for this pillow.

I hope y’all are inspired to add a little touch of autumn to your home decor. If you’re on the lookout for even more fall ideas, be sure to check out my plush patchwork pumpkins…

I just went out and bought 3 leaves from dollar tree. There were not very many leaves left and I had to go to both our locations to get 3. They had a ton of pumpkins, but the leaf is my favorite. Thanks for the idea!
