Make a Holiday Stenciled Sign {Christmas tutorial}

I am getting so excited to get my Holiday Decorations out.

It snowed a few days ago and I just couldn’t resist making something festive and Christmas-y!

I decided to make a Holiday project using some of the new MS paint and mediums. I had a broken, old shelf sitting out in my garage waiting for the trash. I cut off the broken part, then cut the good part half and  reattached the pieces together for a little recycled wall art.

I was so excited to use some of the Martha Stewart Paints and Stencils by Plaid. It was fun experimenting with different  finishes — like the Antiquing Medium, Pearl Paint, Sparkle Medium and their Finishing Spray. I love the MS Habanero Red and Aquarium together. So yummy!!

Here’s what I did:

I attached a thin board to the back of the two shelf pieces. This stabilized it and then instead of trying to hang two separate pieces later, it keeps them together. I first added a layer of Liquid Nails under the board and then I used a staple gun to staple the board to the back of the shelf pieces. I made a stencil with my Silhouette machine, but you could use basic stencils to create the same project. I also sanded the board after painting the board, and before antiquing it. When antiquing, I just wanted a little bit on the edges so I put a small amount on a wet paper towel and rubbed it where I had sanded the paint off.  After I brushed the glitter medium on and let it dry, I sprayed a final coat of Gloss Enamel over the top and it was done! You can’t really see the glitter in the pictures, but it is very festive.

I love seeing it sitting on my shelf.

It makes me want to put on some Christmas music and sip hot cocoa by the fire!!

    LOVE this sign. I have a Cricut, not Silhouette and was wondering when you cut the stencil, did you use stencil material or contact paper or something else?

      I used vinyl to cut out the stencils, but if I had used stencil material I could have used it again which would have been smart LOL!

    I just love that! Great color choices … it looks so wintry and fun. My tree never goes up until December 1st but I’m starting to get excited about all the decorations coming out of the attic.

    We’ll be buy our tree from my son’s elementary school…..so I guess whenever they decide to sell them is when we’ll put up the tree.

    We normally pull the decorations out the day after Thanksgiving and I put them up on December 1st.

    Just looking at it makes me want to go put a Sweater on…. 🙂 It Screams WINTER!!!! which is a word I don’t understand… With 80 degrees and rising today… I think i might have to make me one of these to at least give me the feel of this Season… Love it!!

    I love Christmas and I would be happy to have my tree up at the beginning of November! However our oldest son’s birthday is towards the beginning of December and I do not want him to feel left out between Thanksgiving and Christmas so we wait and put the tree up the Sunday after his birthday.

    I have been following you on twitter for forever but never get a chance to really go through your blog. I have a quick question, which you may have addressed at great length, and if so, I apologize. I am ready for a die cutter, but I am overwhelmed with the selection. Can you give any advice? How did you pick your silhouette? What is the ultimate cutter you wish you had? Any blogs you like that highlight great projects using the cutter? Thanks so much.

    This is so cute, Jen!! I am loving light blue and red together for Christmas. It feels so old-fashioned and homey! We put our tree up right after Thanksgiving. I want my full month of looking at it before it has to come down! 🙂

    Great sign, Jen! I love the stencil, especially the snowflakes. I have a baby size wood sled I found at a yard sale and I wanted to fix it up to hang outside my front door this year. I love this blue and those stencil snowflakes might work well on it.

    I’ll be putting up my decorations Black Friday. I like to do the little pieces first before I do the tree. It helps get me geared up to do the tree, since it takes me a few hours on that alone!

    Oh, that’s pretty, love it! Aquarium is a beautiful color and i agree with you that i looks fantastic in combination with red.
    We usually put up our tree at the beginning or middle of december, but i will collect all the decoration from our attic today. Can’t wait to give some of these old items a great makeover.
