When we moved into the #1891AvenuesCottage we knew it would be our forever home. The home has so much potential. There are so many projects that we want to accomplish but we also want to be sure to do the best remodel that we can and stay true to the age and history of the home.

Updating a Bathroom on a Budget

We are remodeling the main floor of the home right now and we knew that we wouldn’t have the budget to do a full remodel on the bathrooms right away. I wanted to give the girls’ bathroom a mini makeover with paint. Paint can do wonders!

Remodel an Outdated Bathroom with Paint

So when KILZ contacted me to see if I wanted to partner on a remodeling project, I knew the girls’ bathroom would be perfect! You see, KILZ is the expert in remodeling older homes.

Their KILZ 2 Primer is a primer plus a sealer and stain blocker. And it provides a mildew resistant coating, which is perfect for bathrooms!

Transform an Older Cabinet with Paint

The bathroom had a solid wood cabinet, which has seen better days. But the cabinet itself was good quality and I liked the sleek design. So my daughter Ella and I decided to paint the cabinet too!

KILZ 2 Primer Evens Out Imperfections

We started by taping everything off and applying two coats of
KILZ 2 Primer to the walls and cabinet.

KILZ 2 Primer also smooths the surface of the wall or whatever surface you are applying it to. Our walls in the girls’ bathroom had been painted so many times that they were pretty uneven. The KILZ 2 Primer really smoothed them out so that the paint could be applied evenly.

KILZ Complete Coat® Paint Can be Tinted

Once those dried we rolled on KILZ Complete Coat Paint. It’s awesome because it also has all of the qualities of KILZ 2 Pirmer, but the paint can be tinted to whatever wall color you want! We chose a color that matched the existing tile. I love how much the paint color really brightened up the room!

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Update — Painting an Older Cabinet

After applying 2 coats of KILZ 2 Primer to the walls and cabinet, we rolled 2 coats of KILZ Complete Coat paint to the walls.

Then Ella applied 2 coats of KILZ Complete Coat grey paint to the cabinet. I love the color of the grey! And I was so impressed by how smoothly the paint went onto the cabinet. I really thought the unevenness of the cabinet would show through. There were a lot of raised areas where water damage had cause a very uneven surface. We had sanded down those areas but they were still pretty visible. KILZ 2 Primer really smoothed out the texture of the cabinet so that the grey paint went on very smoothly!

Then Ella applied 2 coats of KILZ Complete Coat grey paint to the cabinet. I love the color of the grey! And I was so impressed by how smoothly the paint went onto the cabinet. In one day we had the bathroom walls primed and painted, plus the cabinet too!

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Update — Glass-Front Shelving for Storage

We added a few cosmetic updates to add to the update. One was an industrial shelving unit. I wanted a place for the girls’ to keep their supplies and towels. We actually matched the paint color to the color of this cabinet and I think they look so great together!

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Update — New Cabinet Hardware

Another update we did was new knobs for the cabinets. I didn’t want to spend a lot on knobs since we will probably be updating this bathroom with a major remodel in the next couple of years. But the knobs were in such bad shape that new knobs really make a difference. For under $50 I had a new look with the cabinet with new paint and knobs!

We also added peel-and-stick tile decal to the back splash as an easy fix to update the bathroom.

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Update — Fresh Towels and Rug

Of course fresh towels really make a new bathroom feel updated. I added the bath towels to some bins I found for the cabinet. Now it will be easy for the girls’ to access their fresh towels. And since the room is a square-shape, I love the round rug in the center. The white against the dark floor is really pretty and fresh-looking.

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Update — Bathroom Salts and Bubbles

I also added some new bath salts and bubble baths to the cabinet. They love a good soak in the tub. I love that it is easy to see inside the cabinet so they know where their supplies are at a quick glance.

Modern Farmhouse Bathroom Update — Battery-operated Candles

There is a strange shelf at the end of the tub that I struggled to know what to do with. I decided to put a plant on the shelf since it’s right under a window. Plus a tray with battery-operated candles. Now when the girls’ want to take a bath, they can turn the candles on and really relax!
