First, I must say how thrilled I am to be guest posting here. Tatertots & Jello was one of the very first blogs I started following and continues to be my absolute favorite!
I had my first baby last July and since I’m obsessed with his growth and milestones, he needed to have a height chart. I know the home we are in now won’t be our home forever, so I wanted to have a chart that we’d be able to take with us to another home.
I used a plank of unfinished wood that was 3/4 inches thick, 5 1/2 inches wide and 5 feet tall. The wood was under $3 at Home Depot!
The other materials I used are:
Fine grit sand paper
paint and brush
clear wood finish
finish nails (to attach chart to the wall)
First, I lightly sanded the surface and the edges so that no one would get poked by splinters while leaning against the chart.
Then I started marking where my inches and feet were using the tape, measuring tape, and pencil. I wanted to be able to mark my son’s height starting from when he was born so I started my measurements at 18 inches and went to 6 feet, 6 inches.
After I made all my markings I traced the numbers using pre-cut Post-Its from Wal-Mart.
I painted over my markings and filled in the numbers. For the 6 inch mark I made the line a little longer to better resemble a real ruler.
*I highly recommend not using a pen or Sharpie because it will most likely bleed through the wood.
Lastly, I sprayed two coats of finish and let it dry.
As a final touch, I put the year my son was born.
Thank you so much Jen for letting me share this on TT&J. I hope your readers will enjoy it!

Oh, I love this! I just posted a similar idea the other day, but LOVE the idea of adding the "est. ____" at the bottom! I'm so going to add that to my Ruler Growth Chart. 🙂

OOOH! Can't wait for the party to start!! I have a few fun Mother's Day projects!
This is great. I have one suggestion. I made a (not as cute) height measurement stand 14 years ago when my oldest son was born. I, too, used 5 feet as my standard height. If I had it to do all over again, I would make it 6 feet tall. My son was devestated when he outgrew the growth chart. They often keep growing long after they hit 5 feet. Just a suggestion. 😉
what a wonderful guest post.I'm a newbie and follow tater Tots and now have carly to add to my favorites for sure.
love the diy ruler chart! i want to make one. thanks for the tutorial
