DIY Entertainment Unit Remodel {Update}

 Here’s a couple updates on what’s happening in our family room.
Right before I left to go to Blissdom, we ripped apart our built-in entertainment unit:
 {sorry – this is a really old picture before we painted the room}
Our neighbor and handyman, Brent helped us install a false-back to hide the cords and help hold up the top part of the unit {it’s attached to studs in the wall too}. And then we installed beadboard with a panel that can be opened in case we need to get into the wires back there. Here’s a shot of the beadboard.
Now I just have to paint.
And thanks everyone who voted on what color to paint it.
The winning vote was  Pottery Barn White. {{I’m so excited}}
I am going to start on it this weekend!!!

 Here’s another shot. We built a floating shelf to hold the AV components but haven’t moved them up there yet. And do you like Ella’s picture that she taped up – lol? Just keeping it real 🙂
  I picked these knobs up for the drawers. They were on clearance.
I’m still trying to decide if they are the perfect ones…
I can’t wait to show you the whole thing once it’s done!!
 I also think I am going to slipcover my couch in something a little lighter.
What do you think?
maybe something like this?
 http://www.potterybarn.com/pbimgs/rk/images/dp/wcm/201041/0225/img90m.jpg
 And maybe get a rug like this eventually:
And here’s something I love —
I met a talented girl on Twitter last week, Ashley from The Shine Project.
[stacylynn3.jpg]
Isn’t she cute?? Well, she has thought up a wonderful idea called
The Shine Project Scholarship Fund.
Ashley makes beautiful necklaces:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--qCeQGS0dAY/TW6o_FDNnMI/AAAAAAAAAfM/eKNNmpXZios/s1600/2011-02-28%2B004.jpg
And she is contributing $$ from each necklace into Shine Project Scholarship fund!

“In January 2012, the money from The Shine Project will be going to
the first ever Shine Project Scholarship award
for an inner city school student’s college education.”

I thought that was a really cool idea.

{I love seeing people that are trying to make the world a better place}What is something YOU are loving this week??

xoxo

    I love the new drawer pulls. Darling! Yes, slipcover your sofa. You need something lighter for spring and summer. 😉 Can't wait to see the finished projects!

    My couch is almost identical to yours. We just bought ours a year ago and I regret everyday that I went with such a dark color.

    I can't wait to see your slipcovered!

    Great way to rework that piece! I think the beadboard is charming, and the hardware! Looking forward to seeing the progression.

    For the paint I like the whitest white. I can't remember what it was called. I love the handles you have right now. They really great.

    This week I am loving my mom. I got to hang out with her for the first time in quite awhile this week. She pretty much rocks! Plus, she gave me her Yudu machine after NEVER using it. This makes me have extra fuzzy feelings toward her right now.

    Those necklaces and the scholarship fund are awesome too.
    Okay, my comment is long enough.

    I love love love those pulls 🙂

    Also your couch is awesome as is. It'll be a nice contrast to the light colors and whites.

    Love the hardware you picked out!! I think your couch would look fabulous covered in a lighter fabric as well! Love the look of the rugs you are looking at purchasing & LOVE those shine necklaces!

    Can't wait to see the finished product. Are you really going to slipcover the couch? That's a major undertaking. Very impressive!

    I am loving this post…a "fake" wall to hide cords…brilliant! And inspiration from Ashley…love it! I also love that it was 60+ degrees here in Missouri…the boys ran off LOTS of energy outside 🙂

    Know what my favorite thing is….besides you, of course….is HIDING CORDS! There aren't many things as satisfying as hiding cords. I don't know what it is. But it's so rewarding! Can't wait to see this painted. And then you can empower me to start painting all the horrid honey oak in this house. EEK!

    Awesome problem-solving with the entertainment center, Jen. And yes, I think the lighter slipcover on your sofa will be wonderful. I have a dark brown suede couch myself and I lighten it up with light throws and pillows. But yours is larger, so a slipcover would definitely do the trick. Fun post and the necklaces are inspired… I have a few ladies in my life that would love them.

    I LOVE LOVE your entertainment center. So creative! I'm also a fan of your brown sectional couch…it seems to blend really well with the rest of your decor. I think I would keep it the way it is. =)

    I've loved following your posts and think you have great ideas!

    I can't wait to see this when it is finished…you are so brave to just tear up the furniture. I know it is going to be great!

    As for what is keeping me happy this week…the sun is shining and little bits of green are showing up very slowly. It is still cold and a bit of snow is predicted, but I can tell spring is coming.

    Is there anything you can't do?! 😉 😉 Love the transformation so far (and the cute picture taped up–my 5 yr. old does that). 🙂 That is a big couch to slipcover, but I know you can do it. I've been wanting to do it with my own couch, but don't have the money or the know-how yet. 😉

    What a wonderful transformation of your entertainment center. My husband recentl "altered" ours too but I didn't think to take pictures. It looks great and saved us a lot of money. I am excited to see the rest of your family room update.

    The necklaces are so nice too and what a worthy cause.
