I am so thrilled that I get to share a project with you. I’ve periodically dabbled in sewing but I just don’t do great in following those directions on Patterns – it’s almost like a foreign language to me! This project is perfect to add an accessory to your seasonal wardrobe or to give as a gift! Any two fabrics coordinating fabrics will work, this isn’t exclusive for Christmas.
The cuts of fabric needed are:

2 pieces of 2″ x 18″ outer fabric (peppermint) – Purse Straps

2 pieces of 6″ x 16″ outer fabric for the – Purse Outer Base

4 pieces of 2″ x 11″ inner fabric (Ho!Ho!Ho!) – Purse Trim

2 pieces of 5″ x 10″ inner fabric with angled bottom edge – Purse Inner Base
-
1 piece of 4″x 8″ inner fabric – Purse Inner Pocket
Let’s start sewing!
First step, take the 4″x8″inch piece stitch a 1/4 in seam around the edge, this will be used to make the Inner Pocket.
Next take one piece of the 5″x10″, center the finished Inner Pocket piece, pin it, and sew it; leaving the top open for the pocket entrance (the bottom of the 5″x10″ is the angled corners). Then stitch a vertical line on the middle of the pocket piece; this will make two 3 3/4″ pockets.
Place the two 5″x10″ pieces right facing now, and sew a 1/4 inch seam around the edge; leaving the flat 10″ piece open for the top of the purse.
Now, for the Outside Base. On each 6″x16″ make pleats running the 6″inch length of the material. I like to start in the middle and work my way out on each side. Putting pleats in so that I get this 16″ length down to 10″inches to match the Inner Base. Just fold and pin as you go (there’s room to move these around how you want here) I ended up with 5 pleats on each.
Next, stitch the pleats in place on the Outer Base. (We’re doing this to tack down the pleats.)
Then place the pleated pieces right side together, place the Inner Base on top those two. Evenly line up the top and side edges, pin in place. Then, stitch around the perimeter of the purse, except for the purse top/opening.
Trim the excess material and then turn the purse right side out.
The Trim pieces are the next step. Take two of the 2″x11″, place right side together and sew a 1/4″ seam. Then put a 1/4″ seam on the opposite open ends, (top and bottom). Complete the other two 2″x11″ in the same way. Then, I stitch the the 2 finished pieces together, so that I have trim that will fit the Inner and Outer Purse Base.
Place the Trim piece on the perimeter of the purse opening. Fold it to place evenly over the Inner and Outer Base pieces. Then stitch directly over the bottom seam line around the whole perimeter of the purse.
Homestretch, lets do the straps! Place the two 2″x18″ right side together, and stitch a 1/4″ seam on both sides of the 18″ length. Then turn the stitched piece to be right side out.
Once the straps are right side out, stitch a 1/4″ seam on the 18″ sides and on each end. Then, place the strap onto the outside of the purse. Pin in place, and stitch a [] square, and then an X in the middle to attach the strap.
Last step, stitch a zipper onto the top side of the purse, or use a button on snap, whatever your hearts desire!

This looks like a fun purse to make. I am looking for ideas for purses and small bags to hold make up and lotions, lip gloss, etec. so they don’t scatter in my purse. Thank you for this information. You make it look easy and like something I could use.

Even though I took home economics in high school n to learn to read the pattern was kind of like what? It was kind of easy after a while, but your is much more easier. Thank God for who ever decided to share your knowledge!!!
I’m not real good at this yet, but I’m learning! I was trying to see how you put the zipper in, since that seems to be my nemesis lately – putting zippers in, that is. How did you get it attached around the ends?
