How to Make a Valentine Heart Pom Pom Yarn Wreath. Brighten up your door this winter with a textured pom pom wreath for valentine’s Day!
Make a Heart Wreath For Your Door
Valentine’s Day has really grown on me and no it’s one of my favorite holidays to decorate for! I love seeing the bright pinks and reds of Valentine’s decor that seem to chase the winter blues away!
Pink and Red Valentine’s Day Porch Ideas
I love decorating our porch for different holidays! This year is our first year in our new home and I wanted r=to make a new, beautiful wreath for the holiday. Since it’s winter here and very cold and snowy, I thought a pom pom yarn wreath would look perfect on our front door!
Pom Pom Valentine’s Day Yarn Wreath
You can make this wreath in a traditional round shape or to celebrate Valentine’s Day even more fully, use a heart wreath form. I found this sparkly heart wreath form at Hobby Lobby, but then I found out that it is also at the Dollar Tree for $1!!
Supplies to Make a Heart Pom Pom Yarn Wreath
- Wreath Form (I used a heart-shaped wreath form but you can use a round one too)
- Scissors or Wire Cutters
- Hot Glue and Hot Sticks
- Ribbon for outside of wreath
- Ribbon for wreath bow
- Yarn (I used four different kinds of yarn and used all of the skeins)
- Sign (optional)
Take the Tinsel off the Wreath Form
I didn’t love the plastic sparkle tinsel on the wreath, but I loved the size of the wreath and the shape. The tinsel is just wrapped on the wreath so it is very easy to take off.
Cut Tabs Off the Wreath
Once the tinsel was taken off, use scissors or wire cutters to remove the tabs around the outside and inside of the wreath form. (this is applicable if you use the same wreath form that I did)
Wrap Wreath Form in Ribbon
Use hot glue to attach a piece of ribbon to the back of the wreath form. Wrap the entire wreath form in ribbon and secure the other end of ribbon to the back of the wreath form.
Create Pom Poms Without a Tool
You can use a pom pom making kit to create your pom poms, but you don’t need one to make this wreath
How to Make Yarn Pom Poms
Decide on the size of pom poms you want to make. Cut a piece of cardboard twice the length of the pom poms. For example, I made 4-inch pom poms and used a box I had to wrap the yard around that was 8 inches in length.
How Many Times Do You Need to Wrap Around to Create a Pom Pom?
You need to wrap the yard around your cardboard 50 times to get pom poms that look like the ones I created.
Cut Yarn and Tie
Once the yarn is wrapped around the cardboard 50 times, cut the yarn and use scissors to cut the yarn at the top of the cardboard and at the bottom. Lay the cut yarn in a straight pile. Then take another piece of yard and tie it tightly in the center of the yarn pile.
Trim Into a Pom Pom Shape
Use scissors to trim the yarn into a circle-shape. To make sure the whole ball is even, I rotate the yarn ball as I trim, gently fluffing it as I rotate.
How Many Pom Poms Do I Need to Make a Pom Pom Wreath
The number of pom poms you need to create a pom pom wreath depends on how big your wreath form is and what size of pom poms you are creating. This wreath form is 20-inches in width and length and I made 4-inch pom poms. I also used a sign at the bottom. If you don’t use a sign at the bottom, you will beed 3-4 more pom poms than I used. I made 24 pom poms for this wreath and that used all of the yarn in my 4 skeins.
Attach the Sign and Pom Poms
Once you have created all of the pom poms, attach the sign to the bottom of the wreath form with hot glue. Then add the pom poms. Lay the pom poms on top of the wreath form first before you start gluing them on. Make sure you like the arrangement of the pom poms. Once you are sure of the placement, hot glue each pom pom on the wreath.
Add Ribbon Bow
The last thing to do is add ribbon to the top. If you are using the same wreath form, there is a little loop at the top. I took 4 feet of XOXO ribbon and pulled a loop of ribbon from the center of the length through the wreath loop to hang on my door. Then I tied a knot beneath the wreath loop and tied the rest of the ribbon into a bow.

After reading this I realized i didn’t decorate my porch. I pulled out on my valentine decor and got the house decorated this past weekend and forgot outside! (Smile) I went back to look at your pillow tute…i need to make a pillow sham and use my fall pillow as a form, to go along with my buffalo check pillows. I will make a heart to sew on-or pick up one of them red felt hearts from the Dollar Tree to stitch on. Thanks so much. Always enjoy seeing your seasonal porch decor!!
