3-Ingredient SAFE Puffy Slime Recipe
It’s FINALLY getting warm here! To celebrate the other weekend we made PUFFY slime. My 12 year old daughter LOVES making slime!! I know there have been problems with kids getting burned by slime made with Borax. My friend told me about a slime recipe she makes that doesn’t use borax, so we gave it a try. I guess making slime is all the rage right now because all of the stores we went to were sold out of Elmer’s Glue. Another friend let me know a slime-making secret – you can buy Elmer’s Glue by the GALLON on Amazon. It’s so much cheaper and think of ALL of the slime your kids can make with that much glue!! HAHA!
3-Ingredient SAFE Puffy Slime Recipe
I loved how EASY it is to make. I also loved that it was warm enough for the kids to go outside and play with the slime LOL!
It’s a really fun activity to make with the kids. My kids are old enough that I let them go crazy making it while I painted and worked on my bedroom makeover. And BTW – my bedroom makeover REVEAL is coming up TOMORROW!!! I am so excited to show it to YOU!
Here’s how to make 3-Ingredient SAFE Puffy Slime:
Ingredients:
(this makes a big batch)
- 2 2/3 cups Elmer’s White School Glue (you can also use clear glue)
- 2/3 cup liquid starch (use Sta-Flo starch, we tried another kind and it did NOT work)
- 2 cups shaving cream
TIPS:
It’s pretty straight-forward, put the ingredients in a big bowl and stir. The shaving cream makes the slime fluffier. Also, you can add food coloring to get different colors. We divided our batch into four bowls and added different colors of food coloring to get different colors of slime.
Another tip – if you add too much liquid starch to your slime it gets a little stiff. If this happens, just add a little water – like a tablespoon at a time, until the slime puffs up again.
You can also add glitter.
If you make your slime with clear glue it makes it translucent instead of opaque.
Don’t let different color slimes touch because they will combine together easily.
Slime = hours of fun!!
We put our slime in jars with air-tight lids. This keeps your slime wet so it doesn’t dry out. You can also put your slime in zip-lock bags to keep it fresh.
There you go!! You can buy everything off of Amazon and it will magically arrive on your doorstep!

Hi Jen, I wanted to make a small batch of this just to try it out, but if couldn’t figure out how to make it small enough to use the tiny 7.6 oz bottle of glue I bought. ???? cutting it in half still used more glue than I have.
Does the food coloring come off the hands or could it stain?
I love the glitter and crunch recipes, so much fun with this stuff.

The food coloring can stain clothes. I would be sure to mix it on a hard surface and wash hands right after. Also if you are worried about getting hands stained, you can stir with a wooden spoon until it gets mixed up well. xoxoxo

Have a question about what to increase to make it not quite so stringy/clingy. I measured carefully but don’t know what to increase just a bit to stiffen it up a bit. Kids love it though. Thanks in advance
Hi Lin!
If it’s too sticky I would add more shaving cream. Just add it in increments and mix to see what the texture is like. Keep adding more until it gets to the consistency you want!

Fun! We did something similar in VBS this summer….FYI….your article implies this recipe is bora-free….it is not. Sta-Flo starch contains Sodium Tetraborax which is borax….Borax is what makes the chemical reaction occur that turns the glue into slime. Thought some people should know this if their child has reacted to borax in the past. Thank you!

This looks like so much fun. I have never made slime before and surprisingly it doesn’t look that messy either. I will try it out with the kids this weekend. Do you think a regular mason jar will do to keep the slime wet?
Yes as long as it is air tight container it will stay wet
I want to make this with my students (I have 28) and then them the recipe to take home for the summer. I will get the Sta-Flo starch, but do you think I could use any kind of shaving cream? Trying to get as much bulk for the cheapest price possible. Saw the comment above about gallon glue at Joann’s. 🙂

We just made this for a 3rd grade mini society project and it made 16 6-7 oz portions. We also used the Wal-Mart brand shaving cream and it worked out just fine!

JoAnn Fabrics also sells glue by the gallon in their school supply (teacher supply) section. Then you can use a coupon and it’s cheaper than amazon.

You can use the coupon at Joann’s? I tried using the coupon for glue at Michaels and they said we can’t on glue. Amazon was much cheaper, $13 for gallon Elmers
I haven’t tried using a coupon for glue at Michaels. I’ve used one at Hobby Lobby for a gallon of slime and it worked. Also I almost always order my glue through amazon now because it’s a good deal and it’s so easy. xoxoxo
