How to paint a chevon rug!
I finally got some pictures of my newest project —
My Painted Chevron Rug!!
And…. I love it!!
I know, I know —
Everyone is obsessed with Chevron.
I jumped on the bandwagon and I think it’s fun.
I love the bold, graphic lines and statement that it makes in a room!
{Ikea rug}
I painted the rug white and then used my favorite color these days — Martha Stewart’s Arrowroot.
The same color as my Pennant Pantry
I just can’t get enough of this color!!!
Shelley came over and we had a great time stenciling the big Chevron stripes on our rugs.
She printed off two big Chevron stripes.
We laid them on our rugs and painted in between both stripes.
I used my handy dandy ruler to make sure the spaces was right.
Between the two of us, we were able to stencil each of our rugs in about an hour.
And then we had a FAB new designer rug!!!!
{for more instructions, check out my first post on this project}
**And you could totally make your own stencil using either stencil plastic from your craft store or heavy paper. Just measure out your Chevron pattern and cut it out.
Now, one drawback to the painting technique is that the rug got a little bit crunchy.
So Shelley had a great idea — sand it!!!
I got out one of my favorite DIY tools — my mini electric sander…
and in about 5 minutes my rug went from hard and crunchy to soft and pliable.
Plus, I love the beachy texture that came through when I sanded it!!
Now my dilemma is — where do I put my new rug???
It goes everywhere!!
My kitchen…
My Board and Batten Bathroom…
My entryway…..
My Beachy Laundry Room….
My Family Room…..
Hmmm, what do you think??
I can’t decide.
But I DO know that for under $30 it was a GREAT deal on a rug with some Summery Personality!!!
Thanks Shelley for a fun day painting!!!
Check out Shelley’s version of the rug — so cute {squeeeeeeeal}

Looks fantastic!
I made one too and, after wrestling with painter’s tape, used wax paper for the “stencil”. I ironed it down so it stayed in place. It was a fun project!
Hey Jen!! It looks awesome!!! I just painted some curtains–cabana stripes–myself. Sooo cute…thanks for sharing!!
🙂

Love the rug and love the CHUNKY MIRROR on your mantle!!

I was wondering about painting a rug and thinking that the paint would probably make it stiff. I never would have thought of sanding it. Brilliant! I love how yours turned out!
Jen,
what a cute idea! I have so many pictures of chevron rugs in my interiors file and don't have one yet b/c they are pricey! My vote is in your bathroom…such a great look in that cute, fresh space (although it does look good anywhere you put it)! It was nice to meet you, even brief, at the creative estates event. You are so sweet and an inspiration! Happy to be your new neighbor!

I love this!! I've been dying to paint my own rug and this makes me want to even more!!!
I love this!! I've been dying to paint my own rug and this makes me want to even more!!!
I love this! Helps me realize I craft on anything and not mess up! It's great and you could just repaint if you ever change your color scheme.
Did you do your wall in your laundry room? Tell me how please. That's way cool.
So FAB! I vote for kitchen!
I'd love for you to come link this up at my Tuesday Time Out Linky Party! The link is below!

Entryway!
OK, I'm totally inspired. Not going to paint the big one in my LR but may get a small one!
Make more then you can have one everywhere! 🙂
That is fantastic! I need to make a run for our dining room and I think I might be able to do something creative like this!
Looks great! Thank so much for the tutorial!
Laundry room!
Oh, I love it! But I really just want to move in to your laundry room. 🙂
entryway! you totally inspired me to get rid of my standard black door mats for something fun!
I think I'm moving in to your house. Every room is brimming with personality. Love it!
I like the rug in the entryway, too. I may make one for my own entryway. 🙂
Front door entryway!!! I love the rug!
Looks Great! I vote for in front of the front door!
It looks amazing! And seriously only $30! I wish there was an Ikea closer than 6 hours from me! I think it looks great everywhere, but I think it looks the best in the bathroom:)
Love the rug and what a great idea! My vote is the entryway, it is a great size there!
I think it's fabulous, Jen! LOVE the idea of sanding the rug. I can't decide where you should put it either. 😉 It's too pretty to put in the heavy traffic entryway…but on the other hand, it wasn't expensive to make, so you could just touch it up or redo it if you needed too.
Wonderful!!!
ummm! that is so awesome! and what a great idea to sand it! who would have thought? so…guess where i may be heading today???? a little place called…ikea! thanks for the idea!!! 🙂
The entryway and laundry room look like the best fits to me.
Love the sanding tip, too! I've been thinking about painting a rug, but was concerned with turning it hard & crunchy. What a smart gal! 🙂
I enjoyed reading your blog ~ thanks for posting such useful content./Nice article and great photos. Very nicely done!
Oooh! I LOVE it! Looks like it's time for a trip to IKEA! 🙂
Jen that turned out fantastic!!!
I love it!
It looks amazing…my vote is for the entryway.
Oh I love this idea, seen it everywhere these times, but every time it`s great to see a stenciled rug;)
And I have to made my own, today I´m off to IKEA and get one;)
Thank`s for the inspiration, Jenn;)
Love this blue beachy style!
I think it looks best in your kitchen.
Lovely greetings and big hugs from Germany…

Love love love it! I vote for the kitchen. It seemed at home there to me.

Wow Jenn it is awesome! I love the fun look of it and the color. I love if the best in the entry, gives it a splash of color and shows how fun your personality is, a great first impression.
So cute!!! I really didn't think I would like it but you totally won me, it looks gorgeous! Great job!
I love your rug! I want one 🙂
oh, Jen, I love it! And you crack me up wearing such cute clothes to work in. 🙂

I love it. Chevrons are so hot right now. I was actually just debating a chevron print behind a monogram, and a new chevron blog button…
great job on the rug! It looks great! I would have a hard time deciding where to put it too because it looks great with everything!
I LOVE it. You girls are amazing.
You two are amazing! I love both versions in both yours and in Shelley's house, I vote for the entry, it's just so lovely, you must show it off to your guests!
I love to see when amazing bloggers pair up to create fabulous decor, bravo!!!

My vote is for the laundry room but any of those spaces would work.
I say laundry room. I love it there. Thanks for the sanding info. I've been hesitant to try this because I heard it can get crunchy.

Wow, your rug looks incredible and it even looked like lots of fun to make! It looks great in the entryway!
so fun! I'd had almost the exact idea brewing away in my mind and hadn't done it yet. I'm rooting for the bathroom, btw. 🙂
Awesome! My vote is for entry way or family room. It kind of overtakes the smaller spaces because it is so bold!
I love what you did to the rug. I need to make a trip to Ikea. I like it in the kithen or by the front door, but it will look great anywhere in your home. I'm so excited about Creative Estates. See you soon!
