Easy Kids’ Activity Idea — Tablecloth Coloring!

Check out this fun family project to keep kids’ hands busy — whether it’s summertime at your home, family time at a cabin, or even a family get together anytime of the year.

My kids have been on a coloring kick this summer, and that inspired me when I saw this fabric at IKEA!

Here’s what I did:

While at IKEA recently, I saw this cool fabric:

As you can see in the picture, it’s called “TIDNY” (Item number is 902.294.18) and is sold by the yard ($7).  (Here’s the link to see it online if you don’t have an IKEA close to you, but apparently it’s sold only in the stores.)
I picked up a multi-color pack of Sharpies (the more the better!), and brought it all home.
You don’t have to use a sewing machine – you could just fold the edges over and glue them – but I sewed the edges. Boom — instant tablecloth!
(Bonus idea – I had a little fabric left over, so I made up a few drawstring bags to give as birthday gifts, along with a pack of Sharpies.)

Little did I know that even teenagers would love coloring it. The kids spent hours around the table coloring and we had some great conversation.

Now we have an awesome table cloth for picnics at the park. You can use it as a fun summer tablecloth – or all year long.

My favorite kind of project – easy and fun! And it keeps the kids busy … for at least a little while!

What did you back it with or put down so while coloring the marker didn’t bleed through to your table?

Have you washed it yet? I’m just wondering if it stayed brilliant and bright, or if the colors faded or blended together. Thanks for the info.

My Imea in Covina was all out. But… I asked to buy the display piece (3 yards) and they sold it to me for $11.47! SCORE!!! We’re headed right out of town from the IKEA parking lot to a week with extended family at the beach! This is going to be perfect fun!

What an ingenious idea! I love the idea of making it into drawstring bags for birthday gifts. You could gift it with a package of the sharpies. That would be such a unique gift. Our closest IKEA is over an hour away so I hardly ever get there. I wish they sold all of their goods online!

I wanted some of that fabric from Ikea so bad. We went to the nearest one (two hours away) and they were all out of it. =( I did get some of Hayley Crouse’s color me line though from fabric.com.

I love this! Did it bleed through to the table at all while coloring?

This is awesome! Have you tried washing it yet? Does the sharpie wash off or bleed?

Such a great idea, and I bet you could use this tablecloth in a variety of different ways if you ever wanted to change it out. I was thinking how cute it would look as curtains in a clubhouse!

Great idea! There is also a really cool new product out that is actually just that – a coloring tablecloth! A friend of mine came up with the concept, and one of the cool features is that it is washable, so you can color it over and over. If you are interested, check out “The Coloring Table” (http://thecoloringtable.com/) You can shop through their website or on Amazon too!
