Pumpkin Succulent Planters Centerpiece Gift Idea
I love fall! One of the things I love most are pumpkins. When I was at Michaels a month or so ago I saw these green and blue-toned pumpkins and I thought they would be perfect for our new home for fall. I bought them and stashed them away. I also love succulents. So I thought it would be fun to make something with these pumpkins and succulents. And I love that this project takes under an hour to create. Yay!
Here’s how to make these Pumpkin Succulent Planters:

- Buy three foam pumpkins in different sizes or shapes.
- Buy three succulents.
- Use an x-acto knife or big kitchen knife to cut a circle roughly the width of the pot of succulents you want to plant.
- Scoop out the foam inside the pumpkin. This is kind of hard and messy since the foam pretty much poured in and is very tightly packed. I had to use a kitchen knife to carve down to the depth that you need to cover up the pot inside the pumpkin.
- I used a big spoon to scoop out the foam and I had to use a little pressure to get the foam to come out.
- Once you get the insides scooped out, put the pot inside and see if it is the right size. You want to cover up the whole pot. I had to cut the top edge off the pots so that they wouldn’t show over the top of the pumpkin.
- It took a few tries to get it to fit right.
- Once it is the right size, put the pot inside the pumpkin. You want to leave the original pot inside the pumpkin to keep the water inside of the plant instead of taking the pot off and planting the succulent directly inside of the pumpkin. If you do this the water from the plant will drain inside the pumpkin and leak out.
And you are done!

I put my pumpkins on a giant round cutting board and put them on my family room coffee table. They would also look great on a mantel or shelf, on a kitchen island or on a table! I love the grouping of three, but you could also give them individually as gifts!

These are so cute!!! I love pumpkins! Would be super cute to spray paint to! Can you spray paint styrofoam successfully?
Jen says
That’s a really good idea! I think you could spray paint a pumpkin that has a coating on it. Like if it’s already orange, but if it is plain styrofoam the spraypaint will often eat into the styrofoam unless you spray it quite far away with a very light coat of spraypaint.
