Good Witch Tea Party!

I know I’ve mentioned before that I love the {Happy} side of Halloween.

I’m sharing this oldie but goodie today. I am updating it because I still think it is a great party to throw for your kids! Make spooky treats, create a witch umbrella to hang on your porch or inside and celebrate the sweet side of Halloween!

Good Witch Tea Party

I had such a fun time creating this little party for my girls and their friends. I had each of the kids come dressed up as a witch. They loved getting into the theme of the party!

Create Witch Hats Centerpiece and Place Cards

We spent the week before the party making the decorations! A witch hat centerpiece and little hat place cards! We also made paper cone party favors filled with treats that hung on the back of each chair.

Make Spooky Food

Make spooky food for your witch tea party! Some foods that we created were spider web treats made from pretzels and white chocolate. The classic mummy pigs in a blanket. Chocolate cupcakes with witch-hats on top. Scroll down to the bottom of the post where I have links to all kinds of halloween-themed party food!

We welcomed the little witches and had them decorate cookies!

Make a Hanging Witch to Welcome Guests

It’s so easy to make this hanging witch skirt! You start with an umbrella. Then hot glue black feather boas around the edge of the umbrella. Fill stockings with bathroom tissue wadded up and tie the stockings to the umbrella spokes. Add tulle around the stockings. I added Halloween socks on top of the stockings. Then either make shoes out of black felt or tie real shoes onto the stockings! So cute!!

Decorate Your Party Table

We put the party food on a built-in cabinet. I already had a picture of the kids hanging there. I cut out little witch hats, masks and a moustache out of black paper and put them on the picture to spookify it a little. Then I added a black wreath and a little paper banner to the nook.

We even Spookified the pictures in our little Family Picture Nook for the occasion!!

And we made some Festive Halloween toothpick Flags and Treat Toppers:

My kids have been so excited to see the new Minions movie. So this weekend when the movie came out we had a little minion party and then a movie date! And to celebrate I thought it would be fun to have a little party before-hand. Ella and I had a great time making the Minion-themed food. And we completed the party with a printable banner – and I’m sharing it with you at the end of this post!

I wasn’t super familiar with Minions. But luckily Ella know all about those little creatures. She informed me that they love bananas. So we made some Minion Bananas.

And we also came across a fun Minions Cupcake idea from Plucky Momo – for these Twinkie Minions. You can get the tutorial on her site.

I also attempted to make a Minion Pizza with mozzarella and olives. It was pretty tasty!

Ella even added sprinkles to the cupcakes that spelled out Minions.

You know what happened…?  It did NOT go according to plan.  Today I’m going to show you a very realistic side of crafting, and how sometimes you discover new things while creating your biggest flops.  I call it Problem Solving Creativity.

This is my finished product:

Let me explain what happened:

I change up my Christmas colors every year.  Last year was red and gold, and I made this artwork to use as decor.

I loved the saying, but it wouldn’t match this year’s colors of blue, green and white, so I decided I would make a decorative plate that said the same thing.

I took an old plastic charger, primed it, then spray painted it a pretty aqua color.

When the paint was dry, I used contact paper to cut letters with my Cricut.  (If you don’t have a cutting machine you can use purchased adhesive letters.)  I eyeballed the placement of the letters and then adhered them to the plate.

Now for the fun part.  (At least I think so….)  Take some 3D puff paint and make random squiggles and swirly shapes along the rim of the plate.  It doesn’t matter what kind or what color.  You’ll be painting over it, so it doesn’t matter.

Make little dots along the edge of the plate and carefully place a round bead into the dot.  Let dry.

Here’s where it all started to go terribly, terribly wrong.  I took the plate outside to spray the whole thing with a nice glossy white paint.  Um, no.

The layer of white made the blue layer underneath it shrivel and crackle.  What the what!?  This shouldn’t be happening.  I primed it, everything had dried properly, so what gives?

The silver lining…?  It kind of looked like ice crystals or frost.  Maybe this was salvageable!

Um, no.

The paint didn’t “crackle” evenly and the crackling allowed the paint to seep under the letters.  Grr. Even trying to touch up the paint, it looked terrible.

U! G! L! Y! You ain’t got no alibi! You Ugly!  Hey! Hey! You Ugly!

If this had gone according to plan, there would have been no crackling and the letters would have peeled of to reveal nice, crisp text.  Then I would have sprayed on several coats of clear gloss.  It would have looked like ceramic.  I promise…  I have used this technique many, many times with great success.

But not this time.  Now what?  Well, it actually is kind of a cool texture. Maybe I should actually paint over it with a silver color…?  Maybe it will look sort of mercury glass-ish…?

I re-sprayed the whole thing with the glossy white, then immediately sprayed over the top with a silver metallic paint, and just waited to see what happened…

As it dried, I thought it looked a little bit like storm clouds.  Ding! Ding! Ding!  I decided to add snowflakes and see how it would look.

I liked it!  The snowflake shapes were cut from contact paper on the Cricut.  (Again, you could use pre-made ones as well.)  I wanted the plate to have more texture than contrast, so I went over the whole shebang with pearlized acrylic paint.  It toned down the contrast and added some shimmer.

A better photographer would be able to capture the texture and swirly patterns.  I went from totally hating this plate to being very happy with how it turned out.

I never would have layered so many paints on top of each other if I wasn’t trying to salvage the original project.  Sometimes you should throw in the towel, but sometimes you should just push through and see where it takes you.  You might discover something fun.  (And what’s the worst that could happen?  You throw away something that you were going to toss out anyway…)

I’m having such a fun time with Pumpkin Week!

I was thinking about it as I grocery shopped yesterday, and I wish Pumpkin Week could be Pumpkin Month. I have so many ideas — and not enough time to make them all. Thanks for stopping by for the fun!

Here is a 3-D Pumpkin Art Wall I made. Command Strips contacted me in February and asked me if I would want to make 13 projects using the Command Brand products. I had such a great time thinking of ideas. This 3-D Pumpkin Wall was one of my favorites.

Here’s How to Make It:

I used 5×7 frames from the Dollar Store for this project. I drilled a hole at the top of each frame.

And then I spray painted each frame orange.

I used three coordinating papers for the wall. I cut out the paper and then alternated the paper in each row, so that each row had a different paper pattern.

I had some small pumpkins I had bought at Target the year before. I took each pumpkin and cut it in half with an x-acto knife.

Then I hot glued the pumpkin half to the center of the paper.

Then I put some ribbon through each hole and tied it into a bow.

The tricky part was figuring out the spacing on the wall. I took the number of frames and the space and then figured out how much space should be between each frame and each row. I made sure that each row and column had the same 2 inches between.

I marked the place where the hook went, and then I attached a Clear Command Hook to those marks.

I love that I can take those hooks off of the wall when it’s time to decorate for another season or occasion. And you can buy replacement adhesive for the hooks. So you can reuse the hooks time after time.

So there you have it — 3-D Pumpkin Art. It’s a fun and inexpensive way to bring Fall festivity to your decor!

We moved to Utah almost exactly 10 years ago. I can’t believe it’s been that long!! I grew up back east — in Michigan, New York and Connecticut, so living so close to the mountains amazes me every single day. I have noticed though that there is a lot of pollution here, especially in the winter. When I am coming down the road in my car, I can see a murky haze laying over the entire valley. And as someone who suffers from asthma, I have a hacking cough almost all winter long.

Now there is something I can do about it.

Over 50% of the air pollution comes from cars.

And as a mom, I drive around ALOT!

I spend most of my time taking kids from school to practices and after-school activities.  Luckily, my kids go to a school right behind my house so they walk. But I also have been trying to carpool more. And, I have the cutest cruiser bike. I try to take my bike if I have an errand to run around my neighborhood. Another way I have been trying to cut down on my carbon footprint, is turning my motor off if I am waiting line anywhere in my car.
