How to Cut an Extra Large Vinyl Design with Your Silhouette Machine!

Good morning Tatertots & Jello readers! I’m Anna, and I’m happy to be back here, on this beautiful March morning, sharing a tutorial with you of something I recently learned how to do.

I absolutely love my Silhouette Cameo but a few months ago I was wanting to cut a custom piece, that was larger than the standard 12×12 square cut mat. Have you ever wondered how to do that? I’ve seen tons of extra large vinyl cutouts, floating around on Pinterest, and I’ve always thought, “gee, I bet I could do that with my Cameo…” And sure enough, it’s possible, and it’s even easier than I thought it would be!!

Step 1: Pull up the Silhouette program.

When you open the program this is what your screen will look like. Keep it on this page and we’re going to make a couple little tweaks to a couple of the settings.

Step 2: Adjust the Width and Height

You can adjust the width and height to however large you need it to be, as long as one of them is set not wider than 12″. For this project I set it to cut a 24″ x 10″ piece. I made one a few months ago that was 48″ x 12″ and it was awesome!

Step 3: Adjust the cutting surface

You want to make sure and tell the Silhouette machine that you will not be using a cut mat, so change this setting to “None”.

Step 4: Adjust the rollers

Since you will not be using your cut mat to cut the vinyl, you need to move the right roller over. Once you move the roller over it will be narrow enough to grab the paper. This is what it will look like once the paper is loaded.

Step 5: Create your design

Create your extra large design and then select “Send to Silhouette”. Once you’re there make sure all of the settings are correct and that it shows your design printing the right direction.

Step 6: Cut the vinyl

You don’t have to cut the vinyl, you can load the vinyl, still on the roll, right into the machine, however I like to cut it down to size. Once you’ve cut the vinyl to the correct size, load it into the Silhouette, and press the “Cut Page” button on the computer. Then watch it to its magic!

When the Silhouette has finished cutting your page unload the paper and peel off the unneeded vinyl. Here’s another trick for you… my favorite tool for getting off the tiny pieces of vinyl, is my seam ripper.

Yep! With it’s pointy edge it does a fantastic job at getting up all the tiny pieces of vinyl, that are normally hard to pull up.

Once you’re done pulling off all the extra vinyl you can admire your extra large work of art!

Here’s the other extra large project I created back at Thanksgiving, it was 48″ tall and I had to cut it in 3 pieces because the finished tree was over 12″ wide.

And I also love that you can reverse out your vinyl and use it as a stencil if you don’t like the look of vinyl, but still want to print out an extra large vinyl stencil. Awesome!

A Decorating Solution {project} and some Silhouette information!

You might know that we turned our Dining Room into my Craft Room/Office, And I LOVE it.

It was one of the best decisions that we ever made.

In doing it, we filled in a big arch with drywall and installed big french doors. I love the french doors because they let in the light from both directions.

The drawback is having your craft room visible from the front door — eeeeek!

And I don’t know about you, but my craft room is messy almost 100% of the time!

I have been trying to figure out what to do about this dilemma for awhile now. And then I found out about Silhouette’s Frosted Vinyl.

So I thought I’d share my little project with you, in case you have your own little mess that needs a solution like me – lol. I downloaded a circle background from the Silhouette online store — .99. And then I measured my space and made the image fit in that space. Super easy.

I was originally thinking that I would use contact paper for this solution, but the Frosted Vinyl is thicker than contact paper and that made it easier to install plus there weren’t as many air bubbles. I think it will hold up better than the contact paper would have.

I only have one panel done so far, but I can already tell that this is going to be a great solution to my messy problem.

Plus — they are polka dots. So cute!!!!

Super Sized Valentine Subway Art!!

Here’s what I’ve been working on for the past week or so.

I’m so excited to show it to you!

It started off as a board that’s been sitting in my garage.

I used a smaller board in the Fall for my Halloween Subway Art,

but decided to go even bigger for Valentine’s Day.

Then last week I went out to lunch with one of my BFF’s Shelley from House of Smiths. We had such a great time. Eating, then shopping. We even ran into another blogging friend – Kirsten!

We found a beautiful rug for her living room and I told Shelley about my subway art project. She invited me to come over and design it in her super fabulous vinyl program and helped me print it out! Shelley designed this awesome background and I did the lettering. It was a fun collaboration.

And then at the end of the night we rocked out in her car to this song.

So much fun!!!

The next day I painted the board gray and then applied the background vinyl.

I also had some left over molding in my garage, so I cut it to size and glued it onto the board.

Then I painted over the vinyl with a metallic paint.

Once that was dry, I peeled off the design and was left with this gorgeous pattern!! Love it!!

I had to bring it over to Shelley’s so she could see it before I put the vinyl on! And we hung it up over at her house – we were so excited to see it all done!!!

Then I applied the vinyl. And painted the middle board with the “love” on it. I love how it stands out!! I applied the “love” board with 3M removeable adhesive strips.

I love it so much that I think I’m going to make another that I can keep out all year.

You can make one for yourself using your Silhouette, or if you want to save some time and frustration, Shelley is going to be selling the vinyl for this project in her Wonderfully Wordy shop. And all you would need to do is paint your board and put the vinyl on.

My Family Picture Wall Makeover

Family Picture Wall

I have a built-in nook in my family room. I’ve never done much with it since we have lived here.

Then I got my new canvas from the Canvas People and knew that I wanted to do something fun with that space.

Cutting Edge Stencils sent me a wonderful new wallpaper stencil to try out as part of The DIY Club and I thought it would be a perfect place to add a little personality to the room. It is the Parsley Blooms Wall Pattern Kit.

This is what the nook looked like before.

The first thing I did was paint the alcove. I used Mythic Paint’s flat indoor paint and the color is Aquarium.

I love the soothing blue-green tones. I also love Mythic Paint because it is no odor and toxic free so it’s safe to use indoors and around my kids.

Once I got the wall painted and it had dried I added a little white paint to the Aquarium color and created a couple different, lighter shades to use the Cutting Edge Stencil with.

I taped the stencil to the wall using blue painters tape. Then I rolled the paint onto the stencil. And Cutting Edge Stencils are so easy to work with. They are virtually goof proof. I started at the edge of the wall and did each color about 4-5 times with the stencil, spacing the flowers out pretty evenly. I didn’t want it to seem too uniform, so I had the stencil overlap in a few places. If you haven’t tried Cutting Edge Stencils, you really should. I say this because I have used their stencils for a few projects and every single time the stencil has turned out great.

They are so easy to use.

Then I hung up my pictures and plates! I used DISCHangers to hang up the plates. They are wonderful! You just put a little water on the back and then wait a few minutes and you are ready to go!

So now I have a real focal point in my room.

Beachy-ish Subway Art Sign {using the Silhouette}

To celebrate the exciting Silhouette Giveaway that’s going on now, I am sharing a project each day this week that was created using the Silhouette.

I’m working on my bathroom remodel right now, it’s going to be a Board and Batten room with beachy colors. So I thought it would be fun to make some Beachy art to do in that room.

I chose this phrase because I think it’s so true — your day will go better if you start it off with a smile!

I took a sheet of MDF from Home Dept and cut it in half. I also found some interesting trim molding and brought that home.

I painted the board a turquoise color using DecoArt — Spa Blue. Then I used DecoArt — Mississippi Mud and mixed it with their Glaze and painted over the turquoise. It gave it a kind of beachy look. I also painted the molding. Then I mitered the edges of the molding and attached them to the MDF board using Gorilla Glue. Instead of clamps, I taped down the molding using painters tape.

Once it was dry, I decided that it needed another layer of paint. So I took the ceiling that I am going to paint my bathroom ceiling — Martha Stewart — Blue Fir, and painted a layer over the whole frame. Once that dried, I sanded some of the paint off so that they undercoat of turquoise would come through and it would look a little weathered.

Then I used the Silhouette and cut out some letters that were 4-inches high using their Ariel font. I cut those out and transferred them onto the Transfer Paper. Then I applied the letters to the board.

The last thing I did was add a little flower embellishment. I took a strip of leftover fabric about 2 inches wide by 12 inches long, sewed a seam down the middle using my widest stitch — it automatically gathers. then I cut out two circles of burlap, one a little larger than the other. Then I frayed the burlap and hot glued those layers together. Then I hot glued the gathered fabric to the outside edge of the burlap in a circle and then added a paper scrapbook flower. Now I have a little beachy sign to go in my new bathroom!

Quatrefoil Wreath Tutorial

My Quatrefoil obsession continues.

I decided to try to make a quatrefoil wreath to hang in front of my house. Here’s what I did:

1. I took two small foam wreaths and cut it each in half with scissors.

2. Then I laid the pieces on my works surface and lined up the edges so it was even. I trimmed a couple of the sides so they would line up correctly.

3. I pinned the wreath edges together so the wreath would maintain it’s shape and so the edges would be tight.

4. Then I hot glued the edges together.

5. When the glue was cool, I wrapped the wreath in fabric. I cut a 2 inch section of fabric about 4 feet long. I wrapped it tightly all the way around the wreath and hot glued the ends down.

6. I added some ric rac and coordianting fabric to another strip of the fabric and added that at the top to hang the wreath.

7. I decided that it needed something else, so when I was at the craft store, I spied this plastic plate. I took it home and printed off a vinyl “H” on my Cricut and applied it to the plate.

8. I drilled a hole at the top of the plate. Added some ribbon and attached it to the bottom of the ribbon at the top of the wreath.
