Spring Sweater Refashion #4 {Tutorial}

Welcome to my quest to refashion my wardrobe!

My fourth Spring Sweater Refashion started off as a plain, green sweater from Target.

It hung in my closet without much wear because it was so plain and I wasn’t sure what to wear with it.

I decided to add some embellishments to one side of it, using some of my fabric scraps from my craft room. This is a 1.5 hour project, just because making the rosette flowers are a little time consuming.
But totally worth it, I think!!

Here’s what you need:

Sweater or cardigan
7-8 different coordinating fabrics {I used some fat quarter squares that I had in my fabric stash}
Sewing machine
Needle and thread
Fabric Glue {optional}

Here’s what you do:

1. Cut your coordinating fabric in 1 inch strips.

2. Take two of the fabrics and ruffle it up by sewing a big seam down the center of the fabric. I used 4 feet of 1” strips to make the ruffle on my sweater.

3. Once the strips are ruffles, lay them on one side of the sweater in a zig zag pattern.

4. Pin the ruffles in place. Then sew the ruffles onto the sweater.

5. Now make some fabric flowers with the other fabric strips. I have a fabric rosette tutorial on how to make fabric flowers if you want to check it out.

I made 9 different flowers in different sizes. To make the flowers different sizes, all you do is use different lengths of fabric strips. The shorter the length of fabric = the smaller the flower.

6. Once your flowers are done, use a needle and thread to attach them to the sweater. I also put some Beacon fabric glueunder the flowers to keep them even more securely in place.

7. If you are using fabric glue, you can use some weights like books to press the flowers onto the sweater securely. Note – if you are using fabric glue, be sure that there is some wax paper underneath the sweater so the fabric glue doesn’t seep through the front of the sweater onto the back. I found this out the hard way – lol!

8. And if you don’t like the frayed look of the unfinished edges, use a product like “Fray Check” on the edges. This will stop the edges from fraying.

Then you are done!

Enjoy your new, unique sweater!!

Spring Sweater Refashion 2011 {#3}

Welcome to the next installment in my quest to refashion my wardrobe

My third sweater refashion started off with a plain white cardigan from Target.

Add a few chiffon flowers and you have a sweater refashion that is super easy, fast and requires no sewing machine.

To make this easy sweater refashion, all you need is:

Chiffon fabric for the flowers.
a Candle
Buttons
Needle and Thread
Fabric Glue {optional}

Take your chiffon fabric and cut out four different sizes of circles. I cut mine out as a 3 inch, 2 inch, 1.5 inch and 1 inch circles. You can use a circle template if you want a perfect circle.

Light a candle and burn the edges of the circles. Rotate the material slowly all the way around each circle.

Once the circle edges are burned, lay the circles on the sweater in the place you want them. I arranged the circles 2-3 circles per flower.

Then pin the flowers on the sweater.

Now sew the buttons in the circle of each flower.

The last thing to do is put a circle of fabric glue under some the edges where the flowers are droopy. Or you can put a quick stitch through the material.

Voila — you are done!!

{total project time = 30 minutes}

Now you have a sweater with some personality!!

I added the flowers around the back for a little fun.

Now – go find some old sweaters and create make some new creations!!!!

Spring Sweater Refashion 2011 {#2}

My second sweater refashion is a plain, black Target sweater that I bought last year. It was too plain. So I decided to embellish it a little.

This refashion also uses a scarf. This is the problem — I buy scarves because I think they are so adorable but then I never feel like I know how to wear them. Or I feel too self-conscious to wear them. So I also had this scarf that I had bought, also at Target, about a year ago. I love the pattern and colors.

I took the scarf and cut it into 8 inch wide sections, then sewed all the sections together to make one long piece. Then I folded it in half width-wise. And I sewed a long stitch all the way down the scarf, creating a long ruffle.

I pinned the ruffle to the inside of the sweater opening and all the way along the collar, down the other side of the sweater. {I adjusted the ruffles so they were all even and the length fit the length of the sweater opening}

Then I added some pretty trim to the outside of the sweater opening. I found it at JoAnnes. I think it really pops against the black.

I also added a little ruffle to the sleeves.

Spring Sweater Refashion 2011 {1}

Last Thursday I went on Studio 5 and shared a bunch of sweater refashions.

Now, let me preface this by saying that I have only been sewing for about a year.

So these are really easy, straight-stitch kind of projects!!

The first one I’d like to share is also one my favorites {I have 11 to share}.

This is a kind of coral v-neck sweater with a blue and white nautical mix.

I love this color combination for Spring!!

I started with a plain sweater, a scarf and an old coral/orange t-shirt.

I laid the scarf on top of the sweater and draped it from one shoulder down to the opposite side of the waist. And then I made ruffles down the length and pinned those in place.

After they were all pinned, I sewed three straight lines with my sewing machine down the scarf, attaching it to the sweater. You can sew more lines down the scarf if you like a less poufy type of garment.

Then I took an old t-shirt that’s too small for me and is about the same color as the sweater and cut about 20 four-inch circles out of the material.

I then made a very fluffy flower. I used my Big Shot machine to cut the circles, but you could also hand sew them. I sewed it all together and attached it at the bottom with a piece of felt. Then I sewed the flower onto the top of the scarf.

Very easy refashion!! Total time — 30 minutes – 1 hour.

Total cost — $12 for the sweater {I already had the scarf and the old t-shirt}

Sorry my pictures are a little blurry. I was going to take some new ones but have been sick..

I wore the sweater out the other day and had tons of people ask me if it was from Anthropologie – {giggle}!!!

Spring Sweater Redo — Part 2 {and 3 & 4}

I had so much fun making over my white sweater a few weeks ago,

that I decided to do another – more colorful one. And while I was at it, I made one for two of my girls. We had fun picking out the material for the buttons and the big ric rac. I let them pick out the color of sweater (Walmart) too. Mine is from Target.

{I was having a bad hair day}

My 10 year old hasn’t taken hers off since we finished it

And when we were done, my teenage daughter even commented that she wanted one!

If you want to make one, HERE is the tutorial. This is a quick and easy project — approximately 20 minutes per sweater. And don’t worry — if you can’t sew, you can use Liquid Stitch on the ric rac — works like a charm!

20-Minute Spring Sweater Redo

I had some leftover supplies from a few projects and decided to redo one of my Spring sweaters.

I used some buttons covers from my Spring Ring Project, some fabric scraps from my Spring Burlap Wreath and some ric rac from a project that’s being posted tomorrow.

I hardly ever wore this sweater before because it was always kind of — BLAH… So — if you want a quick, easy way to add some pizazz to a sweater — try this!

First I covered the buttons with fabric. Very easy — use a pencil eraser to push the prongs through the material and then snap on the back.
Then I cut off the existing buttons.
Next, I took a piece of big ric rac I had laying around and stitched it onto the sweater — right over where the buttons were. {If you don’t have a machine, you could use fabric glue or Stitch Witchery} I tucked the ends of the ric rac under the top and bottom of the sweater and they were secure when I stitched it into place.
Then I used a needle and thread to attach the new buttons to the sweater.

I like the way the ric rac peeks through from under the edge of the sweater. Very fun! I am going to look around for a pink or blue sweater to do it with next!

15 minute Sweater Refashion for $2

Here’s an $2 solution to update a blah sweater.

I found this gathered ribbon at Hobby Lobby. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it at the time.

First I placed the ribbon on the sweater and pinned it on.

At the ends of the zig zags the ribbon folds UNDER and wraps down to the next row. I also let the ribbon overlap at the ends of the sweater, so when the cardigan is butoned, that ribbon lays against the other side of the sweater.

And, like the Anthro sweater, the zig zags are not perfectly lined up. It gives the sweater a more unexpected look.

Sweater Redo #2 and update on "pink and Chinese" bedroom

Here’s a fast and simple redo to update a top or sweater. I really liked this sweater, but it was a little boxy and I really prefer cardigans. So it sat in my closet, only worn a couple of times.

This is a 30 minute project. Here’s what you do:

Take your sweater, find the center. Cut a straight line down the center.
My top was a little wide, so I cut out a 2 inch section of fabric from the center.
Take your seam tape (available in many colors from your fabric store), cut two sections of tape a little longer than the length of each sweater side.
Lay the tape over one of the side, folding it in half with the sweater seam in between and the sides of the seam tape matching up. Pin it in place.
Fold the ends of the seam tape under on the top and bottom of the sweater seam.
Sew it together. and do the same thing with the other side of the sweater.

Hand sew the clasps on the inside of the sweater opening.

I took the leftover material, cut it into small lengths and joined it with ribbon to make a little flower embellishment.

Now go enjoy your new sweater!

And — it’s T-minus 3 days until Ella’s birthday and deadline for the “Pink and Chinese” bedroom. Have I painted the room yet — no, made the pillows or curtains — no. Do you think I need to get a move on??? I think I’m starting to panic!!!
