Who isn’t a HUGE Snow White fan??

It’s an iconic movie, and so when I heard they were remaking a live-action version of this movie, I knew I wanted to go see it. And then when the creators of the  Mirror Mirror movie, starring Julia Roberts, contacted me to create a craft inspired by the movie, I was so honored and thrilled to make a project celebrating the movie.  I still can’t believe it.

One of the most beloved stories of all time is coming to life in the motion picture event for the whole family, Mirror Mirror.  A fresh and funny retelling of the Snow White legend, Mirror Mirror features breakout star Lily Collins (The Blind Side) as Snow White, a princess in exile, and Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts as the evil Queen who ruthlessly rules her captured kingdom. Seven courageous rebel dwarfs join forces with Snow White as she fights to reclaim her birthright and win her Prince in this magical comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences the world over.  The film also stars Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the Prince, and Nathan Lane (The Birdcage) as the hapless and bungling servant to the Queen.

Mirror Mirror will hit theaters March 30. I am so excited to see it with my girls!!!  The film is rated PG.

I thought it would be fun to make some Printable Subway Art to celebrate the movie.

Aloooooooha! I’m Charlie, from Attempting Aloha and I’m visiting you today from the sunny island of Oahu! Wait!! Don’t leave because you’re jealous!! Can’t we still be friends? I promise not to brag about heading to the beach weekly or about doing yardwork and getting tanlines too much…   Truly, I mostly just stay inside and work on our home renovations anyway (my hubs is in residency, so most of it gets done all by my lonesome). But if I find a contest for whitest legs on the island, I’m entering (only if food or cash is involved, of course)! As Jen is the queen of all things subway art, I asked her if I could share one of my subway art clocks with you wonderful peeps. And she said Yes! And then I fainted. But I’m back. And here I am chilling with 11,000++++ of the coolest people on the planet. Can I say ALOOOOOHA and Mahalo to Jen for just being so dang wonderful?! Back to business. Oh, but  here’s what I look like in case you’re the kind who likes to know who you’re dealing with:

OK, so I’ve done a few clock make-overs during my 5 months of blogging (see my header…). And one was a subway art one for my daughter’s teacher as a Christmas gift. For that one I used a holiday clock I’d found at Walgreen’s for just over $3. They were a little more complicated since they’re wider than a standard 8.5″x11″ piece of paper, so I searched for a clock that would be easily accessible across the country and also had a face smaller than 8.5″. Enter Wal-mart. Yes, folks, they truly do have everything. And chances are, there’s probably one near you or that ships to you.  So here’s the clock I chose:

Yep, he’s a pretty boring little fellah, but he was the size I needed, and the prize ($4) was awesome enough!  I chose black, so I could show you how easy it is to spray paint them, but it also comes in white and red, and spray paint comes in a huge range of colors! Here we go! Step 1)  Take your clock apart. You’ll need a small screwdriver to remove the 7 screws in the back. Then the frame comes off, and the glass comes out.

Step 2)  If you’re going to spray paint your frame, be sure to cover up the hands. I just used a paper towel and taped it down. I’m classy like that.   I did one coat of spray primer and one coat of spray paint. Worked great! I also chose to use a black acrylic craft paint to paint the red second hand black. It felt a little high-school-gym-ish with the one red hand…

Step 3)  Later, when you slip the new clock face on, the little tail end of the second hand will be a problem if left as is, so I simply clipped mine right down with a pair of scissors!

Step 4)  Download and print the clock face. Sscroll to the bottom of this post for the actual downloads. This spring version is available in pink, blue, and green. Be sure your print options don’t say anything like, “fit to print margins” as that will shrink the clock face, and it won’t fit properly. It should fit just right. Then you’ll cut it out right along the outside black circle and then cut out the small black center circle as well. Then go to your kindergartener’s school supply stash and bust out the glue sticks!! Purple is preferred but optional.   Push all three hands together (Ehhh…that would be hands on the clock. Sorry if that was confusing for all of you out there with three actual hands…and might I add that you are the envy of every mother with more than two children…) and slip your new clock face over them. My pic was taken before I painted the red hand, but you get the picture, right?

Be sure to push out the bubbles like in that last pic. Step 5) There are a couple tricks to putting your clock back together. First, I recommend putting a battery in, so you can make sure the clock hands are working properly. Tilt it up like it’s hanging on the wall and watch it go around at least a full minute. I had somehow bumped my hour hand loose, so when I tilted it up, it immediately flopped down to 6:00. It just took a little bit of tweaking. I just pushed down on that one hand and set it until it was firm on there.

Then put your glass back on, and you’re in business!

I am so excited to share this tutorial with you guys! I feel so lucky to be able to post it on tatertots and jello as well! I have to start off by saying that I really got the idea and inspiration for this from Ashley over at Lil Blue Boo, she is so creative and so inspiring! If you haven’t read her blog, you should really take a look!

This project has a particular way of letting your own creativity shine. Even people who don’t think they are creative will be surprised with themselves. I am a really cheesy Valentine lover at heart, which is where I got all my inspiration for the wording. I just thought of all the cheesy things I would want to say to my husband and this is what I came up with!

• Paint. I used Ceramcoat and Americana paints, in the following colors repsectively; charcoal, opaque red, pop pink, fuschia, fushcia pearl, think pink, rooster red and santa red (americana). Ideally you want 5 colors minimum. A base color, 3 block colors, a stencil/shape color and a overlay color.
• A thin hardboard canvas at 11 x 14 inches. Usually they come in packs of 3. You can get them at walmart and at Michaels, as well as the dollar store (though they only have smaller sizes)
• Painters Tape (mine is about 1.5 inches wide, and it is green from Walmart.
• Sanding Block/Paper, not too rough
• Paint brushes, foams about 5 or one for each color
• Words. I used my own design in black vinyl lettering that I cut out with my silhouette. Though you can use regular paper and a printer too.
• an open back frame, size 11 x 14
• acrylic spray sealer
• a pencil or stencils of your choice
• plastic bowl

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Paint your hardboard your chosen base color. I would suggest a lighter color if you plan on using darker lettering, or a darker color if you use lighter lettering. Paint on at least 3 coats, the less you paint, the more the canvas will show through when you sand, this is all a personal choice. I find that the canvas showing through a little makes the end result a little more antique looking, which I like.

2. After the base is dry, place your painters tape into whatever shapes you would like. I like squares and rectangles, though I have seen some sweet triangles. Paint each open spot one of your block colors, as I have at least 6 to 9 shapes, I use the same 3 colors, 2 or 3 times. Paint at least 3 coats again, enough to coat it evenly and well. Let dry and pull off the painters tape. NOTE: If using darker lettering, make sure your blocks aren’t too dark, and vice versa with lighter lettering… it doesn’t turn out so well! I know it looks a little scary right now, and thats normal! I think that about EVERY subway art I make like this… just keep going!

3. While the blocks are drying, prepare you lettering, either with a printer, or a cricut or a silhouette.

4. When your board is dry, tape on your stencil, or draw some shapes onto it. I drew on some hearts with an HB pencil as lightly as I could.

5. Paint in your drawings or stencils again making sure you use at least 3 coats, maybe 4. You really want these shapes to show up. I also painted an outline around my hearts to make sure they would really show. Don’t worry if they aren’t perfect, the edges of my hearts were definitley fuzzy! Let dry.

6. Once that layer is dry, take your overlay color, which can be the same as the base color, or a slightly darker/lighter version, and place in a plastic bowl. Add a very small amount of water and mix until your paint is watery and thin. Paint over top of everything. The Paint should be thin enough that you can still see whats underneath for the most part. Let Dry.

7. Once it is dried, sand that baby down. I like to sand in circles for some reason. Sand harder in some places than in others. I sand enough so that little grains of white show through from the original canvas. (the vintage feel, especially with cream colors) When you are done, take a damp cloth or paper towel and wipe off the excess dust.

8. Now you can carefully place your lettering. Since I am using vinyl, I remove the transfer tape and rub it down. If you are using a printer and paper, then use mod podge to stick it on. Mod podge dries clear, is fun to pull off your fingers and will work awesome, just make sure you use enough and that you evenly coat the whole project.

9. Now take your almost complete project outside and spray it with acrylic sealer, this will allow you to dust it off when it needs and help the letters from peeling. (You can skip this step if you are using mod podge, as mod podge acts like a sealer). Let dry at least 10 minutes without touching, you don’t want finger prints!

10. Place your finished piece of art in a nice open back frame and hang on your wall/ put on your shelf. Voila! Congrats! I bet it looks better than you thought it would!

but decided to go even bigger for Valentine’s Day.

Then last week I went out to lunch with one of my BFF’s Shelley from House of Smiths. We had such a great time. Eating, then shopping. We even ran into another blogging friend – Kirsten!

We found a beautiful rug for her living room and I told Shelley about my subway art project. She invited me to come over and design it in her super fabulous vinyl program and helped me print it out! Shelley designed this awesome background and I did the lettering. It was a fun collaboration.

And then at the end of the night we rocked out in her car to this song.

So much fun!!!

The other day I had my friend Sarah from Alpine Poppy and her daughter over for a Girl’s Subway Art Day. We had a wonderful time chatting and making some Subway Art projects! I made a Spooky Halloween one using a board I had in my garage from my Laundry Room project {more details on that coming up this week!}

It was great fun! A Girls Craft Day is a great way to get projects done while having fun!I highly recommend it

I painted my board using my DecoArt Americana Black craft paint. Then I cut out the letters using my Silhouette machine. But if you don’t have a craft cutting machine, you can use sticky scrapbook letters for the same effect. OR, you can print off letters using your computer on cardstock and cut the letters out and then decoupage them on!

I added three rolled flowers for fun, using two different fabrics in each.  I sewed the flowers together and then used Gorilla Glue to attach them to my board. There is a great Rolled Flower Tutorial over at My Sparkle if you want to check it out.

I had a dilemma of how to hang up my Spooky Subway Art when I was finished. Luckily, the nice folks at Dremel sent me a cool power tool a couple weeks ago and I had a chance to try it out!!! Wow – I felt so handy! It came with a box of little bits and there was a drill bit. So I popped that on and in 2 seconds flat it had drilled through my pretty thick wood. I made 2 holes and then I found an old wire hanger.

I cut it in a 20 inch section using some heavy-duty wire cutters and threaded it through my holes. I felt about 5 inches looped across the top. Then I took a pair of small pliers and wrapped the hanger around the pliers in a circular motion, creating a tight loop. I did this on both ends and then I painted the hanger with my DecoArt Americana Orange Paint.

And, instead of hanging it on a plain old nail, I slipped a sparkly knobover the top of the nail and hung it on that for a little excitement. I had the perfect wall for my Spooky Art – long and thin. It’s perfect!!

I have been enamored with Subway Art for awhile now. I love the graphic black and white look of it.

One type of personalized Subway Art that you can make would be a Family Sign. This would be a good gift if you have a friend or family member and would like to make a gift for the whole family. You can put each person’s name on the board and then characteristics of that person.

The second type of personalized Subway Art you could make would be individual plaques. You could do these for different types of people — family members, friends and even as teacher gifts.

There are two different ways to make each type of personalized Subway Art. 

The first is by printing out paper on your computer and mod podging it onto your board. I took a piece of MDF ( you can also use a canvas if you like). I painted the board black. You can also add some decorative molding to the edges if you want to make it extra special.

Then I went in Microsoft Word and printed out some letters (I used Ariel font — regular Ariel, Ariel Narrow and Ariel Bold). I printed out the fonts to see if they were the right size. Once I decided the right size for the board, I reversed the font out by making the background black, then I printed them out and cut out each word individually. Lay the papers on the board the way you want them to look when you are done. Then take them and lay them out to the side of the board in the correct order.

**Note — here’s a good tip — use photo paper and print out on the matte side of the paper. If you use photo paper, your black will be blacker.

Then I mod podged the paper onto the board. Once the words were all on the board, I put an extra layer of mod podge over the top of the board.

The second way of making the personalized Subway Art is to use your Silhouette and print the words off using vinyl. Then use Transfer Tape and transfer them onto the board.

I made the smaller boards 8 inches x 8 inches square — but you can make them any size you want! The last thing I did was added a vinyl embellishment or a flower to each board to add a little extra pizazz.

 And you have a great, personalized gift that’s great for birthdays, anniversaries or a great  
Christmas gift!
