Make a DIY Stenciled Grocery Tote! (tutorial)

Hello Friends!

I’m so happy to be here another month sharing with you one of my latest little projects.

Lately I’ve been super busy working on my kitchen makeover and inspired by it I made this tote.

The best part about it is that you can purchase these totes at your local Wal-Mart for about $6.00 for 3 of them.

We are just going to give them a quick makeover using paint, ribbon and buttons.

In about 30 minutes you can have one of your own!

TUTORIAL

The first thing I did was to iron the tote.

After the fabric was smooth I applied the vinyl stencil that I had previously cut.

I always like to press against the edge of each letter to make sure no paint will bleed under it.

The third step involves paint.

I like to use fabric paint for my projects since it is softer than regular acrylic paint.

Before I started painting I placed a piece of paper inside of my tote to protect the other side of it.

It is a good idea to add some painter’s tape to those areas where the edge of the vinyl is too close to the fabric.

You don’t want to paint out of the lines.

Use a flat brush for this step and tap small amounts of paint against the fabric.

Peel the vinyl off.

I used a pin to peel off those hard to reach areas.

After the paint was dry it was time to have some fun and give some personality to the tote.

I used ribbons and buttons to do so.

With the help of some pins I placed the ribbon in place.

Then I opened a few stitches of the tote and I placed the end of the ribbons inside.

I turned it inside out and I sewed it again securing the ribbons in place.

To secure the rest of the ribbon I sewed some buttons on top of it and a little bow at the end.

Before I knew it I was done.

My little tote will be part of my kitchen…

I am going to use it to store all of those plastic bags that come home with me from the grocery store.

I hope this simple tutorial inspires you to stencil some fabric of your own.

Pillows, curtains, totes and even rugs are some fun surfaces to work with.

{{Gobble Gobble}} Thanksgiving Pillow tutorial

Here’s a little Thanksgiving project I made up this morning.

{Kind of fun for this time of year.}

{Gobble Gobble Pillow}

I made it with my Silhouette and Heat Transfer Material. But you could print out the letters and make a stencil too, then stencil the words on your pillow with fabric paint.

I used the other side of my Pretty Witch Pillow — I’m frugal like that. They are cotton Ikea pillow covers. I was going to use orange heat transfer material, but I didn’t have any, so I used Turquoise. It matches my couch

Here’s what I did:

1. Create the gobble pillow in Silhouette’s Studio program.

2. Reversed out the text – so it will work with the Heat Transfer material.

3. Print out the letters with the Silhouette.

4. Peeled off the negative material, revealing the letters.

5. Printed out one Gobble out of the different colored material.

6. Arranged the words on the pillow cover.

7. Ironed the words on the pillow covers.

So fast and easy!

Now I have a whimsical pillow cover to celebrate Turkey Day!

{and it’s a little non-traditional, but I’m a little crazy like that LOL!}

PS — Here are the Silhouette files , if you want to use them. I used 9 inch heat transfer material. So I printed out the first sheet of two rows of gobbles, then one more row of gobbles and lined them up with the first sheet and then printed out the last gobble in turquoise.

$5 Challenge — 3 different Dollar Store Tiered Tray Ideas {and a Chevron stencil printable}

Studio 5 called me up a couple weeks ago and asked me if I would take the $5 Challenge.

Of course I couldn’t resist!!

So I headed over to my favorite place — The $ Store and scoped it out. I decided to make a few tiered trays. I have been loving Enamel Paint ever since I made my mustache glasses.

I wanted to make some Chevron Platters.

Kind of nautical for Spring!

I ended up making three different kinds of Tiered Trays from the Dollar Store.

The first were Painted Chevron Plates. I picked out two plates and my Dollar Store was out of glass candlesticks, so I had to go scrounge around a few thrift stores to come up with enough for my projects. But they ended up being between .25 and .50 each so score!!

I made a Chevron template on my Silhouette and printed it off on vinyl and then stuck the vinyl to the plates. Then I painted over the stencil with Plaid’s Enamel Paint.

Here’s a tip — do NOT let the paint dry and then peel off the stencil because your paint will peel off too. You need to peel off the stencil while the paint is still wet.

Then I painted some pennants on one of the plates and a flower on the other. You can use a pencil on your plates and then paint over the pencil marks. And obviously, you can paint anything you want. I was also thinking that a big number would be cute on the top plate.

{total cost — $2.50}

I have made a Chevron Stencil that you can download if you want to use it. You can either trace the chevron pattern on Contact Paper and cut it out with an x-acto knife.

Or you can trace the stencil onto stencil material and also cut it out with an x-acto knife. You can find stencil plastic at your local craft store.

Then bake the plates in the oven for 20 minutes to set the paint. Once baked, the plates are dishwasher safe. This paint is technically not supposed to come in direct contact with food, so use a doily or something when putting your food out.

The second type of tiered platter I made was — A Triple Tiered Platter.

{total cost — $4.00}

I got this idea from Joy’s Hope. She made some last Spring and I have been obsessed with them ever since. Super easy. Just get three of the silver platters at the Dollar Store and spray paint them different colors. Then spray paint a couple of candlesticks too. You can attach the candlesticks to the platters with Gorilla Glue, E6000 or 9001.

{total cost — $3.00}

The third platter I made was — Mod Podged Pizza Pans.

I also found the pizza pans at the Dollar Store. You take strips of paper and mod podge the paper on the trays. Then there is a spray you can spray over the top that seals the paper.

Painting my door and stenciling a rug for my front porch!!

I painted my front door!

It used to be this brown color. This picture is a couple years old and you can see even then there were some nicks in the paint. Suffice to say — it needed a new paint job pretty badly!!

I decided to go with black because it’s classic. But my porch needed something to go with the new paint job. I have loved Cutting Edge Stencil’s Houndstooth Stencil from the first moment I saw it.

So I thought it might be fun to stencil a houndstooth rug for my porch!!

Cutting Edge Stencils sent me one of their amazing Houndstooth Stencils as part of The DIY Club. Then I headed down to my local hardware store and found an indoor/outdoor rug for $19.99! So I brought that home and got to work.

The first thing that I did was I taped the edges of the rug. Since the rug was a different size than the stencil, I wanted a nice, crisp border going around the edges of the rug.

Then I started stenciling at one corner of the rug. I used the same paint that I used to paint my front door. And I also used a foam roller.

**One tip I recommend is to have a piece of newspaper handy to roll the excess paint from the roller before you roll it onto the rug.

**Another tip is to not push too much on the stencil as you roll – it can stretch.

I pushed a little too much and it made my lines a little wonky, but overall I really love my new rug! It makes such a stylish statement!!

Shelley made me a really cute House Number vinyl, but it’s been so cold that I haven’t been able to put it on yet

Quatrefoil Obsession Update

I wanted to share a couple projects that people made with the stencil I shared:

So cute! And here’s something really cool. Ashley from Cute as a Fox contacted me and asked if she could turn the stencil into a

Cricut SVG file. How cool is that?

I am still trying to figure my Cricut out, but Ashley says that In order to use a SVG file with your Cricut you will need a software called Sure Cuts a Lot — which allows you to cut any True Type Fonts, and shapes from your computer. You don’t have to buy cartridges anymore! You can purchase the software here. They also have a huge forum where you can download tons of images ready to cut.

Once you have the software installed, there is a button that looks like a little present and says SVG on it. You click on the button and choose your SVG file to import. Then you can size it how you need it and print it to your Cricut machine. So much easier than cutting it out.

Quatrefoil Painting Project — with free printable

I love quatrefoil — what a wonderful shape. So steeped in history — I may have a slight obsession with medieval historial fiction…. Anyway, I have been wanting to make something with a Quatrefoil shape for a while now.

Note — a Quatrefoil wreath is coming up soon.

In honor of The CSI Project’s first challenge — Paint, I made a couple of painted quatrefoil projects out of an old stool and a big tray.

Come over to The CSI Project for the tutorial and HERE is the stencil.Updated to add: I had a few people ask me the color of the paint on the stool — it’s Folk Art #444 Patina. Also, I’ve updated the links to The CSI Project. I am about to remodel my bathroom and am hoping to do it in this color and white. Blissful!
