How to Clean a MOLDY Outdoor Rug

How to clean a moldy outdoor rug. A couple of weeks ago I got my courtyard at the #1905Cottage all spruced up for Spring. Over the winter leaves had gotten trapped and snow had piled up to create a moldy mess! And my rug was under all of that. I didn’t get it rolled up and put away in time. So as I was cleaning up the space I wondered if the rug could be salvaged. It had stains from the leaves decomposing over the winter.

I decided to clean it and see what happened. So here’s my experience cleaning a moldy outdoor rug.  Clean a Moldy Rug Spring Cleaning Tips.

Supplies:

Bucket

Detergent

Stiff Brush with Handle

Bleach (optional)

Clean a Moldy Rug Cleaning Tips

First I tried using dish soap first because it is gentle. I took the rug into my driveway and sprayed it down with water. I put a few squirts of dish soap in a bucket and filled it with water. Then I scrubbed the rug with a stiff brush that had a long handle. After the whole rug was scrubbed, I rinsed it off with the hose.

I discovered that the rug was cleaner but there were still stains. So I got serious. I

I emptied out the bucket and filled it with two cup of bleach and 10 cups of water. Then I tested a small section of the rug to make sure that it was color safe. After seeing that the bleach didn’t fade the pattern on the rug, I sprayed the rug down again with water and then scrubbed it with the bleach solution. I left the solution on the rug for about half an hour and then I rinsed it off again. This time I could see the yellow stains running off the rug with the water.

I also scrubbed my cement with a solution with twice as much bleach – so 4 cups of bleach with 10 cups of water and my cement looks good now!

I did this twice and then I let the rug rest in the sun for the rest of the afternoon. When it was dry it looked just like it had when I bought it two summers ago. I was so pleased.

I just had to share this little bit of good news. So if you have an indoor/outdoor rug that has stains, try these cleaning techniques before you throw it out.

Now my courtyard is all ready for Spring! And my rug looks great. Yay!!

1. Craft Room Storage

If you have a craft room consider organizing the closet of your room to keep all of your supplies. I took an inexpensive shelving unit from Target and added bins. Each bin is labeled with different craft supplies – paints, tools, party supplies, yarn, ribbon, etc. If you don’t have a closet in your craft space, consider getting a little shelf unit with doors to keep your supplies inside. You can grab the supplies you need and shut the doors for a clean look. Or you might live in a home that is smaller and you don’t have a dedicated craft space. I have a solution for you – a craft cart! Rolling carts are a wonderful way to organize. You can put your supplies on the cart to store them. When you want to craft, simply roll the cart into whatever room you want to work from!

2. A labeler is a great tool to get your whole house organized

The labeler I use is cordless which is so nice because you can get up into hard-to-reach places with it like your attic or garage and you don’t have to worry about plugging it in. Labeling everything makes finding items so much easier.

3. I keep all of my seasonal supplies and decorations in plastic bins

Plastic bins will keep all of your storage dry and the bins are easily stacked which makes your storage areas much neater and easier to navigate. I label each of my plastic bins with a printable label that I print off on my computer.  It’s so nice to easily see what is in your containers.

4. Organize Seasonal Items

As a DIY/Crafter I LOVE pillows. I ended up having TONS of pillows. You can see the before picture of my pillow closet below. If you have a lot of pillows and not enough room to store them all I have an idea for you. Take all of your pillow covers off of the inserts. You may find that you have many of the same size insert. You can donate your extra insert pillow forms and use one pillow form. Then when you want a different look, just take the cover off your pillow insert and put the new one on. I took all of my pillow covers and folded them up and organized them in a bin by color. Now I can easily see what pillow covers I have and my pillows don’t take up as much space! I store my pillow inserts in a bins and it’s easy to access them.

5. Store all seasonal items in the same place

Metal racks are an easy way to keep seasonal containers. I keep all of my seasonal bins in a storage room with these racks. I use the printable bin template to print off what is in each bin so I can easily access them. All of my seasonal items are kept together – Christmas, Halloween, etc. Then when I am decorating for a specific holiday or event all I have to do is grab the bins with those labels, instead of rummaging around in my storage room for the bins that go together.

Can you believe it’s almost January?? This year went by so fast! I am always sad to put the holiday decor away but in another way it feels so great to have a clean home. Every year the thought of cleaning out my whole house seems overwhelming. And I know from experience that making a big change is SO much easier in smaller increments. So as I was thinking of how to get on top of the clutter in our home, I broke it out into each room and then make a list of areas that needed attention. I thought if I just tackle one little section at a time, by the time the month is over it would add up to a BIG change!

So I took my list and made it into a calendar. Each day I am going to tackle the item on the list. By the end of the month my whole house will be cleaned out! Some items on the list will take longer than other items, but overall I think it’s a very achievable daily list. I can’t wait to get started!!

Spring Clean Your Home in ONE Day and Printable Checklist

I have a love/hate relationship with Spring Cleaning. On one hand I LOVE the way my home feels and smells after we Spring Clean but on the other hand I HATE the effort of Spring Cleaning and trying to get my kids motivated LOL. This year I’ve teamed up with Clorox to create an checklist of tasks we need to do in our cleaning to make thing easy! I think it will make the Spring Cleaning process faster and easier for everyone!!

Here’s how we are doing our Spring Cleaning in ONE day. I split up the tasks according to room. I created an EASY Spring Cleaning printable. I printed off a copy for everyone in our home and I labeled who is in charge of what AND exactly what needs to be done in each space.

I also love to use quality cleaning products that make Spring Cleaning easier. I’m sharing three of my favorite cleaning products and how they make cleaning faster AND easier. Here are EASY ways to clean every room in your house this Spring:

For the bathrooms you want to thoroughly clean them PLUS deep clean the bathrooms. These are things you don’t do every week when you clean — like cleaning the windows, scrubbing the walls and baseboards and cleaning your cabinets.

• clean windows
• clean cabinets
• wipe down baseboards
• scrub toilet
• wipe down walls and all surfaces

We love Clorox Disinfection Wipes and have been using them for years. They are so easy to use. All I have to do is give each of my kids a container of the wipes and the checklist and they can go work on their space. I know by using them they protecting us by killing 99.9999% of bacteria while cleaning through grease, soap, scum and grim. They are perfect for every space in the home.

Some of the things you want to do in your kitchen a few times a year are clean the windows, clean out the pantry, wet clean the drawers and cabinets. You also want to clean the fridge, taking out the drawers and shelves and scrubbing those out in the sink. Another good item to clean is the oven.

• clean windows
• clean out pantry – wipe down all of the shelves and bins.
• wipe down all appliances
• clean out the fridge – take all of the bins and shelves and scrub them out in the sink.
• vacuum and wipe down all of the cabinets
• sweep and mop floors. Wax floors if you have hardwood floors.

We love Pine Sol Lemon and use it throughout our home. In the kitchen I use it to clean out my fridge and scrub out my cabinets and pantry. It’s easy to use — all you do is add ¼ cup per gallon of water.You can also use it on no-wax floors, just diluted and rinse. I also use it in the bathroom — pour ½ cup in the bowl and brush thoroughly, including under the rim. It’s a one-item wonder, it cleans floors, sinks, counter, stoves, bathtubs, showers, tile, and more. Easy! I love how it cleans and the scent is wonderful. I use it all year and it makes my home smell so good. I love lemon scent.

For Spring Cleaning in your living room or family room it’s a nice time to de-clutter the room.In our home, the family room is a place that can accumulate a lot of clutter – like magazines, papers,etc. This is a good time to donate or throw away things that you don’t use. Another good thing to do in your living room is clean any area rugs or carpeting. You can rent a carpet cleaner or hire a carpet cleaning service. Also rotate your couch cushions and clean them. Our couch is slip-covered so it’s easy to take the slip covers off and pop them in the washing machine.

• wipe down baseboards
• clean and de-clutter room, especially any bookshelves

Bedrooms really need spring cleaning. They are a place where things go and are forgotten about. Especially in closets. I have my kids go through their closets and donate any clothes that are too small or that they haven’t worn in the past year. It’s also great to clean under the beds and in any bedroom cabinets. Another big item in bedrooms is flip your mattresses over. If you have a cushion-topped mattress you can rotate it instead.

• clean carpets and area rugs
• wipe down and polish bedroom furniture
• clean windows
• clean out closets

You may not have a dedicated space that is an “office”, but chances are you have an office space in your home where you work on bills, the kids do homework,etc. Spring is a great time to go through your papers and file important papers and get rid of clutter. It’s also important to clean your computer keyboards, restock office supplies and tidy things up in your work family office space.

After winter our yard always needs a lot of work. Some of the things that I like to do to get ready for Spring are sweep out the patio and porch areas, clean our grill and clean the patio furniture.

As we are cleaning our home for Spring, we have a lot of trash and bags to be donated. I love Glad Garbage bags because they are so strong. It’s the worst when your garbage breaks all over and you have to add the frustration of cleaning up spills too. I also love Glad’s antimicrobial protection bags with odor protection that keep our garbage cans smelling good. Because of our HOA rules we keep our garbage cans inside of our garage and the odor protection keeps our garage smelling fresh.

I love Springtime! The warm weather. The flowers. And of course Spring Cleaning. NOT. Actually I do love getting my home all cleaned out after the winter and letting fresh air in. But after all of these springs of getting my home cleaner, I have found out something a little mind-blowing. If you keep your home semi-organized, it’s not such a HUGE deal to do Spring Cleaning. My mom always said “A place for everything. And everything in its place” and I would roll my eyes. But it turns out she really was correct. Darn it!! LOL. And one of the places that can get the messiest and the yuckiest is the kids’ bathroom! So I am sharing five ways you can help your kids keep their bathroom clean.

Now the #1905Cottage is a small home. The addition is done and that brought much-needed bedrooms and two new bathrooms, but because of the size of the lot and the original small home, I could not add on too much square footage. As a result, the bedrooms and bathrooms are small. So these tips are great to keep a small bathroom clean and organized!

1. Storage for towels and washcloths. I bought a free-standing cabinet for the vanity. It looks so great but it doesn’t have a lot of room for storage. There is a shelf that runs along the bottom of the vanity, so I bought some baskets for storage. The kids know that towels go in one, cleaning supplies go in one and toiletries go in one. So when they are doing their laundry, they know to fold the towels up and put them in the towel basket.

2. Storage for cleaning supplies. The middle basket is for cleaning supplies. I have found that keeping the cleaning supplies in the bathroom is great and it makes it easy for the kids to grab the cleaning supplies and use them.

3. Make cleaning the bathroom super simple. Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are so easy for the kids to use on the counters. I love the clorox wipes because they get the area clean and they are so easy to use. Another thing the kids love is the Clorox Toilet Wand. All they have to do is pop a new head on the wand and scrub the toilet out. The Clorox toilet cleaning head is preloaded with Clorox toilet bowl cleaner and the heads just pops onto the Toilet Wand handle. The head of the want is pre-loaded with toilet bowl cleaner.Ella loved seeing the blue toilet bowl cleaner come out when she inserted it in the bowl. It also kills 99.9% of germs – which is awesome. And when they are done, the kids just pop the old head off into the trash and put the wand away on the little stand that has a place for it. You can also keep the wand heads in the container with the lid. It’s so nifty!

4. If you have a small bathroom, consider a hanging storage container to keep extra toilet paper handy as well as other items kids, teens and tweens might need like q-tips, razors, face cleaners. This hanging storage basket is great and it’s so easy for the kids to change out the toilet paper when it runs out because it’s right above the toilet. Kids love easy!

5. Keep cabinet drawers organized with simple clear containers that are easy to pop in the dishwasher if toothpaste gets messy. You can also organize hair bands and other things kids need in the mornings so getting ready is a snap. I love clear drawer storage containers because it makes it so easy to see what’s in the container instead of having things get lost. And they are easy to take out and reconfigure when the kids think a different arrangement might work better.

Of course we do a few extra things like scrub the grout and baseboards for Spring Cleaning, but having the kids know the steps to keeping their bathroom clean and staying on top of cleaning their bathroom makes Spring Cleaning so much easier!
