Have you ever had a project in your mind and then you just can’t find what you are looking for?

That’s what I ran into with my guest room redo. For the bedding I knew I wanted a grey duvet cover that had some ruffles but not too many – so it wouldn’t be too “girly”. And I wanted it to be a plain color so I could make some graphic pillows to go with the bedding. I looked and looked and couldn’t find what I was looking for. I found a duvet at Anthropologie but it was a little too light and at $250 – out of my price range.

And urban Outfitters had a ruffled duvet, but it was a little too ruffled and still almost $200.

I decided to get some sheets and make my own duvet. But then while I was at Target, I went up their Bathroom aisle and saw a ruffled fabric shower curtain. And I wondered if that might work. So I bought a couple along with a matching sheet, came home and figured out a way to make a duvet.

I loved the ruffles at the bottom of the shower curtain. They reminded me of the Anthropologie Cirrus duvet. I Cut the ruffles off the second curtain and sewed them onto the first so that there were 6 ruffles. And then I took the left over fabric from that same curtain and cut out two 10 inch panels to add to the middle section to make it wide enough to fit a queen-sized bed.

Then I added a bottom 6 inch panel to the bottom ruffle. And now my top section was the same size as a queen quilt — 90 x 108.

Then I cut the queen flat sheet to the same size for the back of the duvet.

And since the shower curtain already had buttons at the top for the shower curtain rings, it was perfect as a duvet!

I sewed the top and bottom of the duvet together, leaving an opening at the top. The top of the sheet I used for the back of the duvet was hemmed and the duvet front had the button holes already in the shower curtain.  I made sure to sew the seams with the outsides facing inwards so when I turned the duvet right side out, all of the seams were inside of duvet.

the last thing I did was hand-sew on some vintage buttons and pop the duvet cover inside. I love the way the duvet looks, it’s just what I had envisioned, it cost less than the other duvets I was considering.

I’m almost ready for the full room reveal – it’s been a really fun project.

Today I would love to share 5 ways you can get fiscally fit by using coupons!

1. Subscribe to your local newspaper and get multiple copies!

Most local newspapers have deals for subscribers.  Call your local paper and find out what is available for your area. Keep in mind that there is value beyond the Sunday paper.  I get coupons in the form of peelies for local retailers on the outside of my newspaper, coupons for free appetizers or desserts in the local “calendar” section and even store coupons within the weekly grocery ads!! And don’t just stop at one! Get as many copies delivered as your paper allows (I get six) in order to maximize your savings.

2. Get organized

Where to begin? I don’t clip my coupons until I need them.  It saves me time, and makes it quick and easy to get all my coupon inserts in order and put away fast.  If you want to see more about my “Clip later” method, click the “Videos” link on my website.

3. Know the rules

Knowing your individual store’s policy on coupons and price matching can really help you save money.  Each store varies in how they price match, accept competitor coupons and even double coupons. Other stores have a store loyalty card that can save you money at the point of purchase as well as earn points for things like money off your fuel purchase. Make sure you ask for a copy of the policy (Many times available on the company’s website) to keep with you so you can ensure you are maximizing all the savings options that store provides.

4. Stockpile when items are on sale

When you see a great price on an item, why buy just one?  Think of this: If you buy a box of toaster pastries at $3.00 a box once a week, for 6 weeks, you have spent $18.  However when they go on sale and you can match it with a coupon, you could get it for around $1.00 a box.  Buy 6 and stockpile and you will only spend $6.  That is a savings of $12 on just one item!

5. Know when to hold ‘em!

Hold on to those coupons! Many coupons have expiration dates that last 6-8 weeks or more.  By holding on to coupons and waiting for that item to go on sale (sometimes 3 or 4 weeks later!), you can then use the coupon WITH the sale to double your savings.

Let me introduce myself, I’m Kaysi from Keeping It Simple

Like the name of my blog, I like all things simple! I’m a simple person and I wouldn’t want it any other way! I love to do all things crafty!

-Leather finisher

You can actually combine dyes if you need to. The brown that I got wasn’t dark enough, so I combined it with a black dye to get the dark brown.

1) First you will need to clean the leather with acetone and a cloth. Using a sock, I went all over the chair. (I did clean it with soap and water to get all the dust off)

Notice the different in color, it really cleans it!

Now it’s time to dye the leather!!

2) With water, I sprayed the chair to make it damp. Because I had such a big area, I would spray a little area at a time and then dye it and then spray another area.

3) Put the dye onto the cloth and wipe it all over the chair. (Wear gloves!! I made this mistake and was cleaning dye off my hands for a week). Dye the whole area trying to make it as even as possible

4) After each coat, take a dry cloth and rub off the excess dye

Do as many coats that you need. This is what mine looked like after 6 coats of dye. I let it dry about 1 1/2 hours between coats

Now you have to use a finisher to protect the leather and dye.

5) Using the spray bottle, I sprayed the finisher on the chair. Like the water, I did a little at a time.

6) Then with a damp cloth, I spread the finish evenly. I used long strokes to do this.

The finish leaves a nice gloss!

Because the cushion was ripped and not in good shape, I just put fabric over it. I used a thick ribbon for the edge in the front of the cushion. It looks so much better now though and I love just looking at it!!

I wanted to use a flowery fabric but my husband didn’t care for it, so I made a pillow to add a little girly touch

This is actually a really easy process! You can dye shoes, belts, purses and furniture!
