Favorite Things of the Week!

This week I’m continuing my new favorite things of the week posts! Since I started blogging 12 years ago, one of my favorite things was sharing YOUR ideas! I hosted a link up party each week and I LOVED featuring the recipes, DIY ideas and crafts that were linked up!

Each week on Fridays I’m sharing projects from creative people I LOVE, plus I’m sharing some of what I’ve been working on and some cool items that I LOVE.

My Favorite Projects This Week

If you’ve been following along on my keto journey you know I’m always trying to recreate my favorite recipes. This week I shared this totally delicious recipe for a Cheesy Low-Carb Taco Bake that makes a perfect keto meal on a bed of greens.

In my Instagram stories yesterday I shared some progress on using removable wallpaper in my kitchen.

Jen over at Rambling Renovators finished up her Coastal Basement Remodel last week and I am absolutely obsessed with the results. I love the pulls she used–I’m going to be using them when I remodel my kitchen!

I can’t get enough of Sarah’s projects over at All Things With Purpose. She has the most incredible design sense AND she remodels RVs and trailers, something I have always wanted to do! She is one of my favorite instagrams to follow over @purposeblog.

Another Instagram I can’t get enough of is The House that Lars Built @HouseLarsBuilt. Brittany has such a singular eye for color, and her bright posts always make my day when they show up in my feed. I loved this flower light strand garland she posted about yesterday!

My Home Decor Secret Weapon: Rugs!

Nothing adds as much to a room as quietly and effectively as the perfect rug. The right accent rug can tie the whole space together like nothing else! This week I want to share some of the rugs I’m using in my house and some that I think could be cute for upcoming room ideas.

A few weeks ago I shared this bright pink medallion rug I’ve been using as a runner on my front porch. It’s on super sale for just about $40 right now!

I also love this pink and orange rug I’m using right now in my living room. The pop of color is the secret that ties together all the decor. It’s no secret that I love to decorate based on the accent color I’m using for my rug! It’s on a huge sale right now too, just $160 for the 8′ by 10′!

This Diamond Textured Trellis Tassel Rug I’m using in my office is one of my favorites ever! It keeps the room bright and has tons of texture in its unique design. The dogs love to snuggle up on it, too–for better or worse!

I still love this Textured Stucco Tassel Rug I used in our living room for half a year. It was perfect for brightening the room and sitting to play games around the table!

The rug I’m using in our bedroom right now is this Chroma Iris Fading Oriental Medallion Rug. I love its classic look and feel, and it brings all the colors in our bedroom together perfectly.

In my last house I used this Savanna Herati Medallion rug (on sale right now for about $125) to tie together the business of my craft and office space. It’s still one of my favorites because of how unique the design feels!

How to Make a Painted Greek Key Rug!!

I love graphic shapes. I found a geometric rug that I loved —

but it was $2500.

So I decided to make a my own geometric rug,

and I love the Greek Key pattern.

I made a geometric rug for under $80 using a simple cotton rug, paint and ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape.

I had a pillow I used for my daughter’s room with a “Greek Key” pattern. I used that pillow for inspiration. This project actually ended up testing my math skills. I had to get some help from my nice husband with the math and he helped me sketch the rug and pattern into graph paper. That made it easier for me to visualize as I taped the rug.

So now if you buy the same size Ikea rug (I used the larger Ikea ERSLEV rug, which is 5′ 11″ by 8′ 2″) and 2″ ScotchBlue tape, you should be able to end up with the same results. Be warned, it takes a while to get the pattern taped on. (It took us about two hours, not counting the first two hours of doing it wrong.)

And to save you the pain I endured, I scanned my sketch into a PDF that you can download and print. Note that I actually made a rug that’s the inverse of my sketch, but it doesn’t matter.

I used the 2-inch wide ScotchBlue tape and built my design on a grid made of 2″ squares. When you look at the sketch, you can see that the design consists of six identical patterns and a border around the outside. (If you have a rug of a different shape, you could just add borders or even increase the size of the grid.)

I taped off four borders of tape along the outside of the rug to make my grid centered on the rug (since it didn’t all divide out neatly). And then I divided the inside section into three wide rectangles, then divided those rectangles in two so I had six identical rectangles. I then taped off the “Greek Key” pattern within those six sections. And the last thing I did was take off two sections of the borders.

Tip: The first thing I did before I painted was I smoothed the tape down around the edges to ensure a sealed line. This keeps the paint from seeping under the tape. This rug had ridges so I had to make sure to smooth the edges down first. (the ScotchBlue tape has a feature called Edge-Lock that helps with this, and I must confess that I found that it actually DID help!)

I used a smooth roller for this project. I have found that smooth rollers work best for stenciled rugs. So I rolled the paint onto the rug, rolling over the taped sections.

Once the first coat of paint was on, I let that dry.

Then I applied a second coat of paint. I think two coats of paint makes the paint darker and makes the paint “pop” against the white rug.

I let the paint dry overnight, and then when it was dry I peeled up the tape, revealing a beautiful patterned rug.

The last thing to do is to apply a sealer of some sort like Scotchguard over the top. Your rug will wear naturally — that’s part of its charm!

Polka Dot Project — My Polka Dot Runner {rugs}!

I love polka dots.

They are so cheerful and happy looking. I have them all over my house.

I polka dotted up some plates on my mantle and in my kitchen:

And I made some polka dot pillows to go on my banquette:

I even added a little bit of polka dots to my lamp makeover on my desk:

I have been looking for a runner to go by my sink and dishwasher for so long with no luck. It seemed like everything I found was like $100 and I would have to order it. So last week I was tearing through WalMart with my kids, running to get toothpaste, I spotted some colorful little rag rugs. They were turquoise and kind of Spring-y and fun. I picked up three to see if I could make some sort of runner out of them. At $5 each — I figured it was worth it to give it a try.

I spotted this ribbon right before I hit the check out line. {and I actually didn’t end up using all of it — just 3 rolls of the polka dot and about 1/3 of the roll of black satin}

Here’s what I started off with at the beginning.

And here’s what I came up with at the end. If you want to give it a try, here’s what I did:

I laid the rugs out on my craft table. I pinned the edges together so they would stay shut. Then I took the wide satin ribbon. {It’s actually outdoor ribbon and kind of rigid and crinkly} and pinned it on the back of the rugs with about 1/3 of it sticking out over the edge. I ran this ribbon all the way and around all the sides of the runner. Then I took it and ran it down the seams in the middle where the rugs came together.

Then I hot glued the ribbon onto the rugs. Pressing down as I went to get the best adhesion that I could. I made sure to run a continuous line of glue at the edge of the ribbon. Make sure that you still have that 1/3 of ribbon that is sticking out over the edge.

After that was done, I flipped the whole rug over and took my polka dot ribbon and matched up the edge of the wide ribbon that was sticking out from underneath and pinned that edge to the edge of the polka dot ribbon. I went all the way around the whole runner pinning it together. And where the rugs came together in the middle, I pinned ribbon over those seams too.

Then I hot glued the two ribbons together. I took the pins out and lifted up the edges of the ribbon and put a line of glue in the middle. I pushed down as I went so the ribbon would be smooth and would adhere to each other all the way around the runner. I hot glued the two lengths of ribbon at each of the seams too, smoothing the ribbon as I went so there would be no rippling.

**Make sure as you are going along, that you are making the edges straight. It’s helpful to have your cutting pad with the grid on it underneath the runner as you work to make sure that everything is straight. I also am not sure if the rug is washable because of the hot glue. For now I am shaking it out and spot cleaning. But eventually I am sure I will try washing it on cold and letting it air dry.**

So now I have a bright, Spring-y runner and it has polka dots too.

Makes me smile every time I see it.

Let’s see what else can I polka dot-up around here – LOL!

Update! My friend Michelle added this about washing this rug — Michelle has left a new comment on your post “Polka Dot Project — My Polka Dot Runner {rugs}!“:

If it helps any I wash my daughters hairbows that I make and they have hot glue, just don’t dry it. I’ve ruint a few bows by accidentally drying them, it heats the glue back up. I love the rug and can’t wait to give it a try.
