Summer Shorts Refashion from Thrifted Mens Jeans. If you have followed me for a while you might know that I was OBSESSED with refashions a few years ago. I even started a separate blog about refashions – RefashionFiles.com. I LOVED finding things and making them unique. I was also very into ruffles at the time LOL! I still love a good refashion though. And my kids LOVE to buy clothes at thrift stores. So the other day we went thrift store shopping because they wanted to create summer shorts. And I think they turned out so cute! The great thing about refashioning is that you can make the project perfect for YOU. So if your daughter wants short shorts for summer, she can make those. But if you want longer shorts for you, you can make yours the length that works for YOU. Here is our little Summer Short Refashion idea! (the picture below is our inspiration photo)

We found our jeans for $8 at the thrift store. But if you already have jeans, use the ones you have and this refashion idea is FREE!! To get the look above, use jeans that are baggy. My daughter wears a women’s size 26 jean and she bought MENS jeans that are a 31. So that is about 5 sizes bigger than the jeans she wears. You don’t want these jean shorts to be tight because then they will be VERY small. So grab your husband’s, brother’s or boyfriend’s old jeans for this project. Baggy = cute.

TIP – If you are making a Bermuda length short, then buy or use jeans that are your correct size. You want the legs to be tighter and a tighter silhouette will look better for longer shorts. 

1. Try on the jeans and measure how long you want the shorts to be. Also – mark about 1/2 to 1 inch longer than you think you want them to be. It’s better to make them too long to start than to cut them too short and have to start over!

2. Cut cut the first leg. You want to cut so the sides of the shorts are a little higher than the crotch.

3. Fold the cut leg over to the uncut leg and follow the same cut line so that both sides of the shorts are the same.

4. Try them on and see how the length looks. Remember – when you wash them they will fray and roll a little so they will be a little shorter after you wash them.

5. If the length is good, now you can distress the middle of the shorts if you like that look. If the length isn’t quite right, trim the length.

6. To make frayed lines in the shorts, mark lines with a pen and then cut those areas and they will fray when you wash the shorts. To get the look of the image at the top, don’t cut the middle of the shorts. It depends on what you like whether you want to make cuts in the middle of the shorts or not.

7. Wash the shorts and LOVE your new shorts!!

Also you can make them a little longer and wear them longer or roll them like this too for a cute look!

TIP – if you want to contain your fraying and you want an even edge, sew a straight line about 1/2 inch up from your cut length on the bottom of your shorts — this will keep your shorts from fraying too much and will keep the edge of the shorts even.

5-minute t-shirt neckline refashion. I go through project phases I think. A few years ago I wanted to refashion my entire wardrobe. And since then I haven’t really refashioned or sewed much. But last week when I was in Texas I saw this t-shirt at the airport and LOVED it. I am all about mexican food and I just had to have that shirt. Nevermind that I can’t wear high collared shirts (I feel like I am going to choke in them lol).

So when I cam home I decided that I would cut the neckline into a deeper oval. And now I think the shirt is perfect for me!

It’s super easy to do. There is no sewing involved. Here’s how to alter a t-shirt neckline:

1. Try the shirt on and decide where you want the new neckline to fall. Mark that spot with a pin or write on the shirt lightly with a pen, right above where you will make the cut.
2. TIP – make the neckline a little higher than you think you want. It’s easier to go back and make the neckline bigger, than try to make the neckline higher later.
3. Use GOOD scissors. As you can see in the photos I started off with some cheap scissors and ended up using my good fabric scissors – they make a much smoother cut on the fabric.
4. To make the scissors cut as smoothly as possible, start cutting at the top of the front, cut through the collar ribbing and then hold the fabric that you just cut with one hand and pull the fabric taut as you cut. This will let you cut in a straighter line without as many jagged edges.
5. Once you cut all the way along the front, smooth the t-shirt and cut the same line along the back, so both sides match.
6. Then wash and dry the t-shirt and the neckline should roll, making it look more finished.
7. If the neckline is still too high, follow the neckline along and cut off as much as you need to so you get the effect you are going for.

The 5 minutes I mentioned does not include the washing and drying time (just in case you were wondering LOL)

And I didn’t have anyone in the house to show you how the shirt looked when it was done so I had to take some selfies – sorry about that haha!

Now I am so excited to share my LOVE of tacos with the world!! I love my new shirt!

If you’re kids are on Tik Tok, they’ve probably seen the big trend of bleach dying clothes. It’s so easy to do and there are so many beautiful patterns and designs you can create.

Please note —

• Do not bleach dye indoors. Bleach can be very dangerous, even fatal if swallowed. An adult must be present.
• Always work outdoors in a well-ventilated area but NOT in windy conditions.
• Never mix bleach with other cleaners, acids or compounds.
• Always wear protective gloves when using bleach
• Use only in well-ventilated areas with plenty of fresh air
• Store bleach in a well-ventilated area away from children
• Leaving bleach on clothing can result in holes and damage to fibers.

Bleach Dying clothes is a great way to take old clothes and give them a new look! Another idea is getting clothes from a thrift store and then bleach dying them.

Get a High-end Boutique Look for Less

Bleach dyed clothes are very trendy and you can find them in some high-end boutiques. But you can get the same look at home for virtually NO cost.

What Types of Clothes Do You Bleach Dye?

You can bleach dye almost any type of clothing. Shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, even jeans can be bleach dyed. Grab some old clothes and give it a try. You can also buy really inexpensive sweatshirts, shirts, sweatpants and tank tops on Amazon and bleach dye them.

How Long Does it Take to Bleach Dye Clothes?

It only takes a few minutes to bleach dye clothes. You spray the clothes with a bleach/water ratio and the amount of time depends on what level of fading you are looking for. If you want a subtle dye look, you leave the dye mixture on your clothes for 1-2 minutes. If you want a bigger contrast, leave the bleach dye mixture on your clothes longer.

Steps to Bleach Dye Clothes

Here is the easy process of how to bleach dye clothes.

Make the Bleach Dye

• You will need a spray bottle. You can find spray bottles at most grocery stores as well as dollar stores.
• We used the ratio of 1 parts bleach to 2 parts water.
• Shake to combine.

How to Bleach Dye Clothes

• Lay plastic garbage bags on your surface. We did this outside on our patio cement.
• Lay clothes on plastic bags.
• Put on protective gloves and goggles are recommended.
• Decide what pattern or design you want to create. (you can splatter the dye on the clothes in random patterns, or create a pattern by spraying lines or shapes on clothes. You can also roll clothes in a circle and add rubber bands to create a true tie-dye look).
• Start spraying the clothes with the spray bottle. You might want to start with a piece of fabric to experiment with before you start spraying clothes. Don’t leave on more than a few minutes – bleach breaks down the fibers in clothes and can result in holes.
• Leave spray solution on clothes until you achieve the level of bleaching you want.
• As soon as the bleach mixture bleaches the pattern to the level you want, rinse clothing in water, Then put the clothes in a washing machine and wash them to stop the dyeing process.

Embroider special words or sayings on a shirt for a one-of-a-kind statement piece. You can embroider any type of clothing – tank tops, shirts, sweatshirts, even shorts or pants! Give it a try! 

Embroidered Shirts are Cute!

Have you seen those shirts with the hand-embroidered words and/or images? Over a year ago I spotted a shirt idea in a boutique in Newport Beach. And it’s been on my mind ever since. So the other day I was feeling inspired and I made a couple of DIY embroidered shirts! It’s really easy. The trick it to have the supplies to be successful!

I have a new line out with American Crafts + Pebbles Inc. It’s called My Bright Life and I LOVE it so much!! One of my favorite elements about the line are the embroidery hoops elements. We have stickers that are embroidery hoops as well as some papers. I used the embroidery hoop paper as inspiration for the floral embellishments that I stitched on my shirt!!

Supplies you need to make a DIY Embroidered Shirt

Shirt(s)

Embroidery Hoop

Embroidery thread

Needles

Washable fabric pen or chalk

Here’s how to make DIY embroidery shirts!

Directions:

Decide on a shirt design

Print or sketch out the design you want for your shirt

Placement

Decide where you want your embroidery embellishment

Embroidery hoop

Secure your embroidery hoop to the shirt with the place you want your design in the center

White marker or chalk

Sketch your design on your shirt with your washable pen or chalk

Thread and needle

Thread your needle and start stitching

Back stitch

Use a back stitch to create your design (see the image below)

Tip for sketching your design

You can either free hand your design on your shirt, or another trick is to hold the shirt up to a window and slip the image you want to sketch under the shirt so that it shows through the shirt.

And don’t worry, if you TOTALLY mess up you can cut the stitches and start over. I used a stretchy cotton fabric for my shirts. A 100% cotton shirt will be the easiest to stitch on, but stretchy works too. You just need to be patient.

In about 20 minutes I was done.

And I love my shirts!!

The other design I created was a heart with a word in the middle.

I’ve had so many compliments on my DIY embroidered shirts!

It’s a modern animated take on beloved Oz books from M. Frank Baum and the characters are smart, funny and engaging. The main character, Dorothy Gale, is a 12-year-old who discovers her mother’s magical travel journal. Opening the journal unleashes a tornado that rips her home into its vortex and transports Dorothy and her dog, Toto, to Emerald City. The series follows Dorothy as she discovers that she must acquire every element on Oz’s “periodic table of magic” to find her way back home!

I love how smart the character Dorothy is. She reminds me so much of my daughter. She’s curious, smart and funny. We loved getting to know the characters in each episode. You find yourself rooting for them. I also love that the series has a science background!

Lost in Oz has received multiple Emmy awards and stars the voice talent of Ashley Boettcher, Gina Gershon, Allison Mack, Jorge Diaz and Nika Futterman.

I love that the new series takes elements of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz book and brings them into this new modern series. For example, in the original book Dorothy wears a blue and white gingham plaid dress. In the new Lost in Oz series, Dorothy Gale dresses like a typical 12-year-old, but the creators have brought the blue plaid from the original into the new series by having Dorothy Gale wear plaid sneakers.

I thought it would be fun to do a little tutorial on how to DIY Dorothy’s shoes by painting plain, canvas sneakers for a one-of-a-kind pair of shoes. And with back to school right around the corner, this tutorial would be fun to make with YOUR tween or teen this Fall!

Here’s how to make Painted Plaid Shoes:

Supplies:

Canvas sneakers (I found these at Walmart for under $6)

Paint (I used multi-use craft paint that works well on fabric)

Paint Brush

Painter’s Tape or Washi Tape

Directions:

I taped off rows in one direction. I tried to space the rows out so they were even. If this seems hard, you can measure your tape and use a pencil to mark where each row of tape should be on the shoe.

Make sure you smooth the tape edges down on the shoe so that no paint gets under the edges when you are painting the shoes.

Put paint on a paper plate and paint the rows.

Let the paint dry then remove the tape.

The next thing you want to do is tape rows going the opposite direction. Make sure your tape is completely dry before you do this. I waited at least 2 hours.

Paint the rows between the tape, this will make the plaid pattern on the shoe.

Let the paint dry, then remove the tape.

Enjoy your custom shoes!!

The post Painted Plaid Shoe Tutorial Based on the new Lost in Oz Animated Series! appeared first on Tatertots and Jello.

When I first discovered tissue tassels, I made them for parties, holiday decor, and even created a tissue tassel mobile for my baby’s nursery. The downside of the tissue paper tassels is that they can get torn or smashed easily. I wanted to incorporate them in my toddler’s bedroom but I knew she would ruin the the tissue ones so I went with YARN instead!

I found this awesome Neon Pink yarn at JoAnn’s (Lion Brand), along with some Red Heart boutique yarns on clearance (Trio for the blue tassels, and Sashay for the silver ones). Here’s what I used to make my tassels:

• Yarn (Lion Brand – 81 yard skein made 6 tassels)
• Something to wrap your yarn around that is the desired length of your tassel (a clipboard worked perfect for these 8″ tassels)
• Scissors

The process for making a yarn tassel is so easy! It is a perfect thing to do while you are watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. 1. Take the end of the yarn and hold it in place on the front of the bottom of the board. Now wrap it over the front and around the clipboard. Keep wrapping it until you have the desired thickness for your tassel. I wrapped mine 18 times. 2. Cut the yarn at the bottom of your board. 3. Now you will cut a small piece of yarn to tie the tassel together. Mine was about 8 or 9 inches but I just eyeballed it. 4. Thread the smaller piece of yarn underneath your rows of yarn and pull it to the top of the board. 5. Tie it together once, and hold the ends securely. Now flip the board over to the other side (still holding on to the yarn at the top.) 6. Now you are ready to cut! Cut the yarn carefully across the bottom of the board, and that’s it! Starting to look like a tassel, huh? Make sure the ends are even and then tie the top once more into a knot to make it secure. 7. Now you will cut one last piece of yarn, a little longer than double the length of your tassel. Just eyeball it! 8. Use this piece to tie off your tassel, about an inch down from the top. Tie in a knot and trim the ends to match your tassel length. ALL DONE!! Once I got going, it only took me about 3 or 4 minutes per tassel. Aren’t they gorgeous?

Here is what my daughter’s bed skirt looked like before:

It is really cute, but I wanted to add some color since her comforter is also white. I decided to add my tasssels at the top of the bedskirt for a few reasons… First, it was really easy to attach them and they are not permanently sewed on, so I can still take them off and wash the bedskirt easily. I used regular masking tape to attach them to the part of the bed skirt that’s hidden by the mattress. Second, Her comforter is a twin size on a full bed, so it doesn’t hang much over the sides. The way I attached the tassels, I can see the full tassel and it looks like they are almost part of the comforter when her bed is made. I like how it looks both ways!

My daughter loves the new “icing” on her bed!

Today I want to share with you how to create an adorable Boutique Holiday shirt. It’s a high-end look with a low-end price!

To begin you will need the following supplies:

– Shirt or dress ($5)

– Shimmer Sheets (Tulip offers a pack of 4 for $14)

– Iron

– Scissors

– Template or pattern for design (free!)

– Paper Towel

I found my shirts at Hobby Lobby. The little tank dress, which I will layer over a long sleeve shirt or pair with a cute denim jacket, was originally only $8.99. And then of course I used my 40% off coupon, which made the price even better! The fitted t-shirt is actually a woman’s extra small. I like the cut of the shirt better than the boxy children’s shirts. Since it will be long on my first grade daughter, she can wear it like a tunic/dress with printed leggings.

1. Now for the shirt design, you can use any pattern you wish. Candy canes, snowflakes, snowmen, ginger bread men etc. I chose a reindeer silhouette and the profile of Santa Claus. Simply do an internet search for the image you are looking for and print it. You can find the reindeer pattern I used here and the Santa Claus pattern here. Both are free downloads from their respective sites. I free-handed my heart. And I used a stencil to create my letter “I”.

2. To cut the patterns exactly, trace the design on the shimmer sheet first. Or tape both the pattern and the shimmer sheet together and cut them at the same time. (If you have a fancy cutting machine, that will work too!) Once they were cut, I spaced out my images on the shirts, making sure they were straight and centered.

3. Finally, I placed a paper towel on top of the Shimmer sheet and began ironing.

The Shimmer sheets adhere easily to the shirts. Check the edges of the images to make sure they are secure. Re-iron where necessary.

My girls love their sparkly shirts. Happily, they look cute with things we already had in the closet- leggings and flats.

I dressed up our Old Navy leggings by adding these ruffle cuffs. Just ruffle up some fabric around a circle of elastic. Then you can slip the cuffs on and off easily to change the look of the legging without making any permanent changes.

You could also pair the shirts with a fluffy tutu-skirt for Holiday parties. I am happy that they were so easy to make and that I didn’t have to spend a lot of money on an outfit that will only be worn during December. This shirt idea works well for little guys and moms too!

I have three girls, and consequently we have a lot of hand-me-down shirts that get donated after being worn by all three sisters. Most of the shirts are not really something that can be worn again, since they are stained or worn out. But I hated to see them sent to the landfills. So I thought it might be fun to take the t-shirts and make something with them.

Here’s what I did:

• I collected a bunch of shirts in four different colors and cut them into 4-inch ruffles.

• Then I sewed the panels together in each color and ruffled each color into a long strip.I wasn’t sure how long of ruffle each shirt would need so I sewed a really long ruffle and cut off the excess at the end of each row. I folded down the edge at the end of the row. A rule of thumb is 2-3 times the width of the shirt is how long you need each ruffle to be — depending on how ruffly you want your ruffles.

• Once the ruffles were done, I laid them onto my shirts to decide what placement I liked most.I ended up using 2-3 different colors on each shirt, instead of the whole rainbow.

• And then I pinned the bottom ruffle on the shirt and sewed it on. (I folded the edges down at each end of each ruffle)

• Once all the ruffles were sewed on, I took a sleeve from one of the shirts and sewed the top and bottom closed and used it as a tie on one of the tank top straps. Kind of fun, but it can also be removed.

**Note — If you are sewing on a knit shirt, you need to use a stretch stitch so that the thread doesn’t break when the fabric is stretched. If you are using a sewing machine, your machine probably has a stretch stitch. See image below:

You don’t need to hem the t-shirt material. It will just roll up when washed. Awesome!!

I finished each shirt in less than an hour. And the girls love their new shirts!!

I also think this would be a fun project to make for the Fourth — you could use red, white and blue ruffles!!
