Amazing Summer DIY Home Ideas

Happy weekend, friends! How was your week? Ours was great. We are right in the middle of my kids’ bathroom remodel. So things are at that messy stage where you wonder if it will ever end but you’re excited because you hope it’s going to look so great! Haha!! Heres a picture of what the bathroom looks like today!

And here are a few inspiration photos of what I hope the space will turn out like!

Here’s a bathroom with a similar layout of what I am looking to do. We will do a large walk-in shower across the room with two pony walls and custom glass door and sides. I am also going to do brass fixtures.

My friend Joyfully Green did this amazing bathroom and I love the marble scallop backsplash! I am also doing a flower tile but on a smaller scale. I also love the painted beadboard behind the vanity!

Upcycle Old Sweaters into Trendy Sweater Pillow Covers

I had a big pile of sweaters to donate as I was cleaning out our home in preparation to move. I took a couple sweaters and turned them into cute fall decor! You might remember the white sweater that I turned into Fall Sweater Pumpkins a few weeks ago. I love the way they look on our mantel.

I also had a brown fuzzy sweater. I decided to create some fuzzy fall sweater pillows for our front porch swing! They are perfect for snuggling up on a fall day and watching the world go by in our new downtown house.

To give the bigger pillow a little more style I added fur pom poms on the four corners. I love the way the fur looks with the brown sweater. It’s so cozy looking!

How Do I Make Fur Pom Poms?

The fur pom poms are from JoAnn Stores and I think they are supposed to be hair accessories. They come attached to an elastic band. I used my 60% off coupon and they were about $2 each. I think they give these recycled sweater pillows a very upscale look!

Three Stitches on The Sewing Machine

I love making pillow covers. You can see my popular 10-Minute Pillow Cover Tutorial. Since my sweater had a finished edge I didn’t need to sew that edge. And since the sweater material was super stretchy and long enough, I was able to use one continuous piece of material all the way around the pillow, eliminating another stitch which also saves time!

How Do I Cut a Sweater to Make a Sweater Pillow?

Cut Panels Out of Sweater Material

You want to find the biggest area of the sweater and cut the largest piece of material out of the sweater. This is usually the back and front of a crew-neck sweater. If you are using a cardigan like I did, then that is the back and sides of the cardigan.

Cut the Back of the Sweater Out

I laid the cardigan out of my work surface and spread out the back of the cardigan. Then I cut the entire back out, all the way up to the arm seams and neck. This long area was the piece I used to create the large pillow cover.

I also cut out the side panels and they were big enough to make two additional pillow covers. This was a very long cardigan.

I laid my pillow insert on top of the panel I cut from the back of the cardigan and measured the width that I needed to cover the pillow cover. You need the width to be the width of the pillow cover PLUS at least one inch. If you are using a stretchy sweater material you can get away with cutting the width of the panel the same as the pillow cover since it will stretch. But if you are using material that doesn’t stretch you want the width to be at least an inch wider than the width of your pillow insert.

Since I had a piece of material that was long enough to wrap completely around the pillow insert and overlap, I didn’t need two separate sides. But refer to my popular 10-Minute Envelop Pillow Cover Tutorial for directions on how to make a basic Envelop Pillow Cover.

Add 4 Inches to the Length of the Panel

You need at least four inches of overlap on the length of your pillow cover material. This overlap is the part that keeps your pillow insert inside the cover. I also wanted the sweater edging to be in the front of the pillow insert for decoration. So that sweater edging is in the front of the overlapping material.

Sew Raw Edge of Panel

One edge on the length of the sweater panel should have a finished edge on the bottom of the sweater. The other edge will be raw. Sew the raw edge by folding the raw edge under twice to create a seam that won’t unravel.

Pin the Pillow Cover to Sew

Now pin the pillow cover. Flip the material inside-out and fold it so it is the size of the pillow insert, with the sewn seam on the outside, overlapping the original sweater edge by four inches. You cant all of your raw edges on the outside of the pillow cover. That way you can sew the seams and flip it right-side out and have all of the raw edges inside the pillow cover with the sewn edges on the right side of the pillow cover.

Sew the Remaining Two Seams

Now you will sew the two sides of the pillow cover. Be sure to back-stitch at the top and bottom of each seam.

Flip the Pillow Cover Right-Side Out

Once you are done sewing the two side seams, flip the entire cover right-side out. Your original sweater edge should be on the outside of the flap. You can choose to have this be the front or turn it to the back if you want a plain pillow front.

Insert the Pillow Form into the Pillow Cover.

Open the pillow cover and insert the pillow form inside. Pull the corners of the pillow insert up to fit inside the corners of the pillow cover and smooth the flap over the opening.

Sew the Fur Pom Poms on the Pillow’s Corners

Now you will sew the pom poms on the pillos’ four corners. The pom poms I bought had a rubber band attached. I kept that rubber band intact and used it to secure the pom pom to the pillow cover. Thread a needle with string and double reinformce the string – use two strands instead of one. You will need to use either heavy-duty thread or a lot of regular thread.

Reinforce the first Stitch

Since your sweater’s weave is more open than regular fabric, intead of tying a knot in the thread and running it under the pillow cover to start, you will need to run the needle under the pillow cover and knot it onto the sweater material first to make sure that the thread is really anchored. Then run the needle up to the pom pom and through a portion of the pom pom, then back under the sweater material and up again. Do this over and over again until the pom pom is attached securely to the pillow corner.

Sew the Pom Poms on Two Ways

You can either sew the pom poms on with the pillow insert inside the cover or without the pillow cover inside. I chose to sew the pom poms while the pillow insert was inside the cover because I wanted to make sure of the placement of the pom poms.

Aren’t they so cozy on our porch? I also made a round pillow and added big buttons in the middle. I’ll write up a tutorial on how to do that. Instead of making an envelope-enclosure I sewed the pillow form right into the cover and that is a different tutorial. Coming soon!

Make 10-Minute Spring Pillow Covers

I love making pillow covers. I know I’ve talked about it before, but making your own pillow covers is so much better than buying pre-made pillows. You can use the same insert over and over which is economical. PLUS you have so much freedom in terms of the patterns and colors of covers you can make. I’ve teamed up with fabric.com to show you how easy it is to change your look up with pillow covers! Here was the same room in the fall:

Make 10-minute Spring pillow covers

This project requires MINIMAL sewing skills. All you need is a basic sewing machine and the ability to sew a fairly straight line.

So I thought – the color of the fabric I used for my closets is exactly the right shade as my family room couch. Why not make some easy 10-minute pillow covers?? It really was a no-brainer.

You can get more information on how to make a pocket pillow cover at this post. But basically all you do is measure out the size of the insert; my inserts were 20-inches square. Then I added an inch all the way around for seam allowance. For the envelop backs you just measure the same as the front and add 6 inches on to the width so there is an overlap in the back which holds the pillow inside the pillow cover. Then sew a seam along the length of the two envelope pieces. You face the fabric inside, so the right side of the fabric faces each other. Pin it in place and sew along the outside of the pillow cover. Then pop the pillow cover inside out, which is really the right side. And put your insert inside.

The fabric I used is  Anderson Check Snowy Fabric.

The other fabric is Anderson Canopy Snowy Fabric

I used the two coordinating prints – one with buffalo checks and the other striped.

How to mix and match patterns

Black and White Fall Pillows –  mix and match patterns. We are still loving our bright Word Market couch. You might remember that I bought it online without being able to read any reviews or being able to test it out. We were so relieved when it came and it turns out that it is comfortable and we love the way it looks.

It’s kind of a gamble buying a colorful couch. There’s the chance that you might get tired of it. There’s also the challenge of decorating around it for different seasons and holidays – like Autumn, Halloween and Christmas. Luckily I love decorating for holidays with a non-traditional color palette. So as Fall approached I thought about how to bring the feeling of Fall into our family room with our green/blue summery-looking couch.

Here is what our couch looked like this summer. I think the pillows make such a difference in decorating for different seasons.

A few weeks ago I found some beautiful plaid flannel material at Hobby Lobby – including a black and white buffalo check and a smaller black and white gingham. I was thinking of making all plaid pillow covers for fall, but finding plaid that would go with my green couch was a challenge. Since I plan to decorate for Halloween this year in all black and white, I decided that black and white pillows in different prints would be perfect for fall and also could stay as we transition into the Halloween season!

I made pillow covers with the black and white buffalo check and the black and white gingham materials.

When I was at Swiss Days I stopped by Nannygoat Pillows booth and found a couple other black and white prints.

I also brought in my Ikea pillows from the black and white covered porch until I find a couple more pillows that will coordinate.

How to mix and match patterns

Black and White Fall Pillows. How to mix and match patterns. I love the way the black and white pops against the green couch. I think the trick in decorating with a lot of different patterns and prints is to keep the color palette the same in all of the fabrics. You can combine any print or pattern together as long as the colors are the same. therefore, I was able to bring in many different styles of patterns and prints because they are all black and white. And another tip when decorating for different seasons is to bring in a coordinating throw. I love this black and white window pane wool throw I found at HomeGoods.

Pillow covers are SO easy to make and also very inexpensive. My larger pillow covers used less than a yard of material. If you want to learn how to make easy pillow covers – here’s my 10-Minute Pillow Cover Tutorial.

Now I am excited to get cracking on a new black and white Halloween mantel.

I wish I had open shelving in my new kitchen because I loved decorating my kitchen for Halloween.

I love to decorate for holidays. And it’s even better when it’s easy! Here is a way to make 10-Minute Valentine Pillow Covers.

I love to make pillow covers because it’s easy to store them between holidays. You can take a pillow insert and use it over and over again all year with different pillow covers. Just store the pillow covers flat and they hardly take up any room!

My favorite place to buy pillow covers is Ikea. You can get pillow covers there very inexpensively. I think the plain covers are $4 and the striped ones are $5 – and they have zippers too. Great deal!

Here’s how to make the Valentine pillow covers:

Buy heat-transfer material (you can find it at the craft store)

Use your craft cutting machine like a Cricut to cut out hearts.

If you don’t have a craft cutting machine, you can trace a heart onto the heat transfer material and then cut it out with scissors.

A tip if you cut the heart out by hand, cut the heart out on a plain piece of paper first, folding it in half to get each side of the heart even.

Then iron on the heat transfer material onto the pillow.

Now you have a festive Valentine Pillow to celebrate the holiday!!

6 Tips to create easy holiday pillow covers and three FREE designs too!

I’ve sewn plenty of pillow covers in my time. And while they are fun to create, sometimes it’s just easier to fast-track a project. Ikea pillow covers are so inexpensive and great quality. For the price – $4 for plain covers and $5 for stripes -they offer an easy way to create holiday pillows and they even have hidden zippers. So you can take them off and store them flat. I change my pillows up all the time. I just save the inserts and change the pillow covers, depending on the season or holiday!!

So here are my 6 best tips on how to make easy Halloween Pillow Covers and I am also sharing THREE Halloween pillow cover designs too!

1. When using a craft cutting machine like your Cricut Explore, be sure to use the “Mirror Image” feature to change the image, so when you cut it out using vinyl transfer material and iron it on your fabric, the image will come out right-side up.
2. Unwrap your pillow cover and iron all of the folds out so it is flat.
3. Then fold the pillow cover in quarters and iron it so you have a center point in the middle of the cover. Do the same thing with the viyl transfer image so you have a center point on that too. Then line both the center points on the pillow cover and the transfer sheet and iron the image onto the pillow cover.
4. Sometimes the vinyl transfer material doesn’t adhere so well onto the fabric. You can buy a silicone sheet and put it over the vinyl transfer material. The silicone sheet intensifies the heat from the iron and really helps the vinyl transfer fabric “stick” to the pillow cover.
5. If you have used a spray adhesive to make your cutting mat “stickier” sometimes the adhesive can stick onto the pillow cover. To get rid of these “goobers”, use a piece of parchment paper and lay it over the top and iron and the “goobers” will disappear.
6. If you don’t have a vinyl cutting machine, don’t despair! You can create cute holiday pillows with a pillow cover and a piece or ribbon. Just wrap your pillow with ribbon and tie it in a bow. Use a ribbon color and pattern that contrasts with your pillow cover. So easy!!

I have a small obsession with pillows. They are such an easy way to change the look of the room and add seasonal festivity.

But I don’t have tons of room to store them. So that’s where pillow covers come in. Pillow covers are slipcovers for your pillows. I recently saw some pretty pillows on one of those daily deals sites. A set of pillows for $99. And they were reduced from $238. That’s a pretty good deal.

I realized that I already had that same material. And guess what? I made the same pillow covers for $4 each. Plus, my pillow covers are almost twice as big as their pillows.

Granted, that $4 didn’t include the pillow form. What I love about pillow covers is I can take a pillow form and change out the covers as often as I like. And, when I’m not using the covers, I can fold them up and store them in my linen closet.

This summer I learned how to make a pillow cover with a zipper and that was not nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be. But, making a envelope pillow cover is even easier. You can do it in just minutes in 4 easy steps.

Here’s how to make the covers:

1. Measure your pillow form. Add 1 inch total to the width and height for seam allowance and cut out the material.

2. Cut out the back panels of the pillow. Take the width of the front pillow cover, divide it in half and then add three inches to the total for both panels. So if you have an 18 x18 pillow, add an inch for the seam allowance — so the width will now be 19 inches, and each back will be 12.5 inches in width. The height will be the same as the front.

3. Take the length of each of the panels that will be overlapping and fold the seam twice to create a smooth seam. Sew the seam on both back panels.

4. Pin the back panels to the front panels with the right sides facing inward. Then sew around the entire pillow cover. I back stitched over each of the seams for durability. Turn it right side out and put the pillow insert inside.

Note — if you want even crisper edges, you can sew a stitch around the entire outside of the pillow once it’s turned right-side out. Like this:

I’m Cyndy and I have a DIY/Craft blog called The Exchange.

When it comes to deciding on a design layout for fabric, the possibilities are endless! So far, I have worked with masking tapes for my geometrical designs and large permanent adhesive labels to create other designs. For this technique, a really strong adhesive back is the key to getting a perfect line. If you look closely, you can see how I laid out the tape and labels to create the designs on some of the pillows I have made:

Instructions:

1) This project will work on any fabric except silk. I used canvas twill on the two Halloween pillows above. I have tried almost every fabric and it works on everything including velvet and again, the only exception that I have found is silk.

 
2) Fold your fabric in half (front and back of pillow) and slide poster board or thicker paper in between the top and bottom just in case the paint goes through the back of the fabric.

3) Pull your fabric tight and tape down to the poster board and counter. It is critical that the fabric be completely tight and flat:

4) Next, decide on your pattern layout. For the Halloween pillows I used wide Scotch brand masking tape and for the bat I printed out my bat design onto an 8.5″ x 11″ large permanent adhesive label (3M). Not all tapes are created equal! If you want to try other kinds of tapes or labels, you should test them first.

I have found this out the hard way!

5)For my bat design, I carefully cut out the design on the label and removed the backing and placed it where I wanted it on my fabric:

For my chevron pattern, I laid out my tape in the pattern onto my fabric and lined up the ends of the tape perfectly at each zig zag to keep the lines straight:

6) As you tape a line or lay your adhesive label, run your finger down the line to make sure the tape is attached. When you are completely done taping your pattern, take a credit card and glide and press down across the tape at least 2-3 times as extra precaution. It is very important to make sure that your tape is attached really good:

7) I have only used Simply Screen Screen Print paint and cannot speak about any other screen print paints. Simply Screen offers about 12 different standard colors and usually mix colors together to get my desired color.

***Mixing screen print paints together is kind of like mixing jello and you wonder if it will every mix. But, eventually, you get the right consistency and texture. If you are mixing colors, remember to give yourself ample paint because you don’t want to run out of a custom mix. Also, the paint dries about 1/2 shade darker than the paint looks wet! (you can test it on fabric and dry it with a hair dryer just to be sure):

 

8)I tested several different paint brushes and determined that the type of brush used makes a difference. A foam brush does not work as well as an acrylic paint type brush:

Begin painting on your screen print paint to your fabric. You don’t want to slop too much paint on but you want your brush pretty wet and your fabric wet as well, kind of like buttering a piece of toast:

9)Go up and down and then left and right over each area. You will see what I mean as you begin painting, it’s more like ink. Try and spend as little time as possible brushing along the tape lines because eventually, too much paint along the lines the adhesive naturally begins to lift. I try to get just the right amount along the lines and never go back over the lines after I have paint once or twice. Wow, I sound like a craft drill sergeant!

 

10) Screen printing paint takes a very long time to dry! Like 12 hours! However, if you put a fan on your fabric, the wetness on the tape will dry after about 2 and you can then carefully begin removing your tape. If you’re like me and cannot wait 12 hours to see your fabulous results and do the “it worked” crafty dance!

11) Screen printing paint also has to be heat set after 24 hours of drying. Just use a pressing cloth over your pattern and an iron (hottest setting) with no steam and iron the pattern real good.

I love this idea — there are special applicator tops that convert paint bottles into tools!! So you can add your paint to the bottle and then screw on an applicator top and you are ready to stencil without having to keep dipping your roller in a paint tray. Not only is it convenient but it also saves on materials and clean up!!

I can’t tell you how excited I am about this. I am not going to be boxed into a project just based on the limited spray paint colors that are available at the hardware store. Now I have 160 colors of spray painting options for projects. This is genius!!

Plus, there are really cool mediums like Chalkboard, Gilding, Glow-in-the-Dark, Etching, Metal Primer and they work on all crafting surfaces including wood, metal, glass, ceramic, Terra-cotta and fabric.  PLUS,  it’s indoor/outdoor safe and  is dishwasher-safe when used on glass. And it’s non-toxic, so it’s safe to use around your kiddos. Amazing!! 

 

• Measure your pillow form and add 2 inch to the width and length of your pre-washed fabric.

 

• Add Paint and Fabric Medium to Roller Container.

• I found the trick was to roll the paint on and then use the smaller sponge to smooth the paint over the fabric. This smoothed the paint and made the surface even. 

• Then, once the painted dried, I ironed the pillow fronts to “set” the paint. This makes the paint washable.

•  The last thing I did was I sewed the pillows together. And guess what?? I made my first zippered pillows. So fun!! A tutorial on that coming up soon!! 

 

I also made two other pillows using Martha Stewart supplies. The first was I made over this star pillow. I used the Spray Paint Kit. It was incredible. It works just like regular spray paint!! It is a little pricey — so save your 40% off coupons **I have a link to a coupon at the bottom of this post.

Then I used one of the special brushes to make lines on the pillow. I love that it looks hand done!

 

And the last pillow I made I added rows of ruffle fabric and stenciled the word “Family” with another of the Martha Stewart Stencils.
