Turn Scrap Wood Into Fall Pumpkins

We are in the middle of restoring or 1891 home. As part of the renovations, we have all kinds of miscellaneous wood pieces from framing different rooms, building our dining room bench and building our new fireplace. SO I decided to take some of the leftover scrap wood and make some easy and inexpensive pumpkins for a fall centerpiece!

Cut Wood to Size You Want

I used 2×4’s and 1×2’s to create my pumpkins. But you can use any size wood. Just cut it to the size you want. I glued my 2×4’s together in long sections. Once the glue dried I cut the wood to different heights with my chop saw.

Dollar Store Wood Tops

I found these wood slices in at my Dollar Tree. They are on the craft aisle and there are a few different sizes. I used wood slices from the medium sized bag. Such a great deal for one dollar!

Paint Scrap Wood Fall Pumpkins Any Color

You can paint your scrap wood pumpkins whatever color goes with YOUR home decor! I used three different colors of orange and pinks for my pumpkins.

Gild the Scrap Wood Fall Pumpkin Tops

I gilded the wood slices I used for the pumpkin stems. I love the gold sheen that it gives my little pumpkins.

Add Leaves or Ribbon to the Top of the Pumpkins

I added some leaf ribbon to the top of my pumpkins with hot glue. I added a dab of hot glue, folded the ribbon in half and put the crease of the ribbon on top of the hot glue. Then I added another dab of glue over the ribbon and put the wood slice on top to secure it.

Distress the Painted Pumpkins

Once the stems are on, you can distress the pumpkins with sandpaper or paint. I added a little of the gold paint on the edges of the pumpkins and rubbed it in with a damp paper towel.

The Easiest Scrap Wood Pumpkins

That’s it! Now you can use your wood pumpkins as a centerpiece like I did. Or on your mantel or a shelf. You can also use them on your porch for cute decor!

Bright and Colorful Mantel and Decor Ideas for Fall

We got a new sofa in the Spring. It fits our family much better, but I missed the color from my smaller teal couch. The new couch is grey with a kind of tweed feel. I struggled with how to bring my love of COLOR into our family room with this grey kind of masculine couch! Finally I had a decorating epiphany. I knew that my favorite color was bright pink. I decided to add some pink pillows to the couch. And loved it! Then I found a really bright and colorful rug and that changed everything for me!!

Bring Color into Your Home

Since then I have embraced my love of bright pink and brought the color into almost every room in our house. And it makes me SO happy!!

Bright Painted Pumpkins

So when I was decorating for fall, I brought out all of my Dollar Store painted pumpkins that I made last year. There were quite a few bright pink pumpkins, along with the other green, blue and orange pumpkins I painted.

Colorful Pom Pom Garland

I brought out a welcome sign and layered the painted pumpkins behind some textured baskets that I found at Hobby Lobby. I added a hot pink and natural wood bead garland I picked up from Target.

And guess what??? I FINALLY got a fiddle fig tree! I found it at Lowes. It was under $30 which is a good price. I had been looking around for one and they seemed to range around $100. So I bought two. I put the other one in my office. I put them in woven baskets. I love the way they look!

Now my couch seems like it fits our home so much better. I found a couple pretty pillows to add to the pink pillows.

I’m so happy with how our colorful pink autumn mantel and decor look! Sometimes I just have to sit and look around at how happy our home is!!

Hi! This year is FLYING by! I can’t believe it’s already October!! You might know that we moved into a wonderful, COLORFUL neighborhood about a year ago. We are loving our new home and neighbors. Last year I discovered that our community LOVES Halloween as much as I do!! All of the homes get so FESTIVE for Halloween. I am going to go around and take some photos of my favorites and share them with you — there are SO many fabulous ideas!

After we moved here I remembered how much I love COLOR and I decided that I wanted to celebrate my love of color in my home and on my blog. One of my favorite recent projects is my COLORFUL Fall mantel. I painted dollar tree pumpkins and displayed them in my family room. Everytime I go in that room it makes me happy to see all of the cheerful colors.

I LOVE decorating my porch for Halloween. And since I have this goal to create more color in my home I really wanted that to be reflected in my porch design for fall. I loved the idea of bringing the FEEL of my mantel onto my porch. So I headed over to Dollar Tree and found as many pumpkins as I could. There are two different sizes of pumpkins there. I painted both sizes of pumpkins the same colors.

I created a vine to go around my front door with these painted dollar pumpkins. I painted the stems gold and I love the way the stems sparkle in the sun.

I also created a rainbow pumpkin wreath, using the same color paint I used on my garland.

I had two cute galvanized metal planters on both sides of my door. I decided to create stacked topiaries to go on top of the planters. It was so easy. All I did was find three pumpkins for each side of the door. A larger one for the bottom and then two more that are a little smaller to stack on top of it. The trick to make the pumpkin topiaries stack is select a pumpkin for the middle that has a stem that is inverted. That way you can put it upside down on top of the larger pumpkin’s stem and it will lay flat. If you look at the picture of my pumpkins you can see how this works.

Our neighborhood can get a little windy. So instead of putting these dollar store pumpkins out on my porch I used real pumpkins and spray painted those.

I have quite a large porch so I wanted to make a few elements in a larger scale. One of the ones I created was a pumpkin display. I used a spray painted cart and brought it outside and layered pumpkins on top of it. I also painted a Pumpkin Patch sign I found from The Wood Connection and put it on a little bale of hay on top of the cart.

On the other side of the door I put a giant typographic sign. I love making these signs because they are so easy and inexpensive to create. I use plain pine shelving boards from the hardware store. I have a full tutorial on how to make Giant Typographic Signs if you want to make one for YOUR home!

I also found a little cart and put some small pumpkins inside of it. The last element on that side of the door are big cut-out wood pumpkins I also found at The Wood Connection. I painted them in the same colors to match my spray painted pumpkins.

I brought the colorful pumpkin theme out in front of my house by layering some of the pumpkins on more small hay bales in the planter area in front of my home.

The last thing I did was add a cute mat and colorful pillows!

Now I have a COLORFUL pumpkin porch to greet my guests this Fall and Halloween!

Colorful Fall mantel with Painted Pumpkins

Ever since I started blogging I have loved scouring the Dollar Tree for fall finds. Usually they have foam pumpkins for $1 – which is a GREAT price! I headed over to Dollar Tree last week and although they didn’t have the larger foam pumpkins out yet, they had smaller ones. Luckily I had a few older Dollar Tree pumpkins stashed away that I could use too, and a few foam pumpkins from Hobby Lobby.

I love non-traditional colors for Fall and Christmas. I think the bright, unexpected colors lend a whimsical feel and I like that. I also have a teal couch and a HOT pink chair in my family room and I wanted to incorporate those colors in my mantel. If you have some plain, orange pumpkins laying around, grab some craft paint and paint them an unexpected color!

Here’s how to paint foam pumpkins:

Supplies:

(I included affiliate links, in case you want to order the supplies to come directly to your home. Affiliate links help fund more projects on tatertots & jello)

Foam Pumpkins

Craft Paint

White Spray Paint

Tin Foil

Mod Podge (for stems – optional)

Gloss Polyurethane Spray

Glitter (for stems – optional)

Directions:

1. Use tin foil to wrap around stems so they won’t be painted.
2. Lay pumpkins on a tarp and spray paint them white.
3. Once dry, paint pumpkins with craft paint.
4. Once dry, paint stems with mod podge and glitter gold (optional)
5. Spray pumpkins with gloss polyurethane for shine.

Then layer the pumpkins on the mantel.

I also found two pumpkin string art pieces that go together and tie my pumpkin theme together.

I love that now I have some orange pumpkins, but I also have some pumpkins that tie in my couch and chair colors.

I added a COLORFUL felt ball garland to the front of the mantel.

Seeing my HAPPY pumpkin mantel is a joy and fits our #ColorfulHappyHome chapter to a tee!

Decorating for Fall is my favorite.

Last week I made a bleached dropcloth slipcover for my couch and I thought it would be fun to keep my Fall decor to grey and white. Kind of non-traditional. I just really wanted to go with a neutral and kind of beachy look for Fall.

DecoArt has an awesome multi-surface line of paints coming out. They were kind of enough to send me some and ask me to make a project with them. I thought it would be fun to paint pumpkins and attach wood letters that spelled out something for Fall!! I chose the word AUTUMN.

Here’s how I made this Beachy Fall Mantel!

• I took 6 small pumpkins. You can find them at your local craft store.

• Then I painted them. I originally painted them grey but once I put them on my mantel, I found that I liked a lighter color. So I repainted them white (just keeping it real).

• And I painted the wood letters Dolphin Grey.
• I attached the wood letters to the pumpkins with hot glue.
• I also painted a round grape vine wreath with the paint  and hung it on an old vintage door.

I just love the way it looks!!

I think the mantel needs something else — maybe a few grey and white Fall pennants??

I bought a couple of hula skirts at the Dollar Store last year thinking I might be able to make them into a Fall Wreath. The raffia-like hula material just reminded me of Fall for some reason. Maybe it looks like straw or hay? I never got around to making the wreath last year, but I found it last week as I was cleaning out my craft room and thought I might try the idea finally.

I really like the way it turned out. And I used some metallic paint pens on the pumpkins which I think brought it a more modern look.

Here’s how I made the wreath. It was a 30 minute project.

Supplies:

2 Dollar Store Hula Skirts

1 Wreath form (mine is 18 inches in diameter)

1 fall pumpkin garland

1/2 yard of burlap material

a cardboard letter

1 roll (6 feet) of lace ribbon

Hot Glue gun

Twine Ribbon for bow – optional

Here’s how I made the wreath:

• I cut the burlap material into sections of 4-inch wide sections.

• I cut each hula skirt into 6 sections. And then I tied the sections onto the wreath form, tying the knot at different places on the form, so it wasn’t super even.

• Once the hula sections were tied on,  I fluffed the sections around the wreath so each part was evenly covered.

• Then I took a 6 foot pumpkin garland I bought a few years ago, and wrapped it around the wreath form. I fluffed the hula sections over the garland.  I also added some chevron embellishments on the pumpkins with paint pens. So easy.

• Then I painted the monogram letter and then I cut sections of ribbon to wrap around the letter. I cut each section separately, instead of wrapping it around the letter, which would have made the stripes diagonal instead of straight.

• I hot glued the ribbon on the letter and then hot glued the letter onto the center of the wreath.

• To hang the wreath, I fitted the door hanger under one of the sections of the wire garland. You can also take a length of ribbon and hot glue the sections to the back of the wreath form, making a loop to hang the wreath

• Finally, if there are scraggly sections of the hula skirt on the wreath once you get it hung, just cut those sections to make it look good.

**Another idea for embellishing the letter would be to add mod podge to the letter and glitter it instead of adding lace. I did this with another letter and put it at the front of my porch. I love the way it catches the light!

And that is a simple and inexpensive Fall wreath idea.
