I love updating my mantels for different holidays and seasons.

The one in our living room is a little more formal — this year I went with a blue and green theme with succulents.

Spring Succulent Mantel

For my family room, I love to go with a more casual, bright mantel. And since I just updated my kitchen open nook in yellow and navy, I thought it would be fun to make my mantel kind of coordinate with that theme since the two rooms are open to each other.

And I love yellow for Spring.

I bought some wood shims a couple weeks ago and I wanted to experiment to see what I could make with the shims. I ended up making some pennants for a bunting. And when I was playing around with them, I fitted the angled ends together and thought I could make them into a flower. So with my sweet husband’s help, we did.

Did you know you an buy TWO different sizes of shims?? We made a large flower out of ther bigger shims and a couple of smaller flowers out of the smaller shims. The pennant bunting we made out of the larger shims.

I will post a more detailed tutorial on how to make the wood shim flowers and bunting soon. But in the meantime, here is how I made the Spring Mantel.

I took the old vintage door I have used for my Spring mantel last year and also for my Christmas mantel and I spraypainted one side yellow. Then I cut out panels to go in the panels of the door with fabric. I attached the fabric to the painted door with glue dots.

I also made a couple of fabric pennants with fabric from fabric I also had made into throw pillows for my couch. And then I took a frame and framed in some yellow chevron material and took a chipboard letter H and cut some moss to fo on top of it.

Another thing I did was I spray painted some resin eggs yellow and navy to match the decor.

I added a colorful bow to a little moss bunny.

And I added some pretty greens to a classic white pitcher.

And look at my bulbs!! They finally bloomed – yay!! I absolutely love looking at them. They make me think that Spring is right around the corner. And I love having them on my little coffee table — they smell so good!

Seeing my little yellow and navy space down the hall from my front door makes me so happy. I love that the mantel echoes the happy yellow of the little yellow table I spray painted that I inherited from my grandmother.

And here’s what it looks like going into the kitchen.

I recently changed out my little kitchen nook for Spring with Navy and Yellow. 

And I made a bunch of pillow covers for my home. 

I was going through Ella’s clothes she has outgrown the other day and I came upon a navy and white checked shirt. It was one of my very favorite shirts that she wore. I thought it would be fun to take the shirt and make it into a wreath. So I did. I took the shirt and cut 3-inch strips in the material.

Then I wrapped them around a syrofoam wreath form. Since the strips were pretty short, I started and ended each of the strips at the back of the wreath, hot glueing them down at the back of the wreath.

Here’s how I made the wreath:

One I finished wrapping the wreath in shirt fabric, I made some colorful bows to go on the front. I thought it would be fun to make a wreath that could have different bows. Kind of an interchangeable wreath that could be changed up for different occasions or seasons.

So I made the bows. There are three different components in the bows. The first is the back part of the bow. I took two pieces of material and cut out a long strip with the ends with two points. I sewed those pieces together and left an opening at the center, so I could flip the material through. The center of the back will be covered up by the front part of the bow.

The second part was the front part of the bow – which is basically a big rectangle. I folded the rectangle together until the sides touched each other, with the right sides facing inwards. Then I sewed the edges together at the top and bottom. Then I flipped the inside out so the right sides faced outwards.

Then I sewed a 4 inch tube of material for the center of the bow. Once that was done, I wrapped the center of the bow around the large rectangle and the outer edges of the bow, making a bow shape. And then I hand-stitched the back of the bow to the center to keep the bow shape in place.

I made a couple of different bows. ANd I attached them to the wreath with pins. So all I have to do to change it up is unpin the bow and add a different one. I thought this would be cute if I made a RED bow for the 4th of July. Red White and Blue!

I love the PRETTY Spring look of this wreath. So fun!! 

I also made some matching pillows and put them on a little bench. So pretty, nautical and SPRING looking!!

I can’t wait for SPRING!!

When we redid our kitchen about a year ago, we decided to leave a couple of the cabinet doors off by the kitchen sink for open shelves.

I took a $6 piece of beadboard and painted it an aqua color and then put it behind the open shelves. It has become one of my favorite places to displace seasonal and holiday dishes and decorations! And it’s so easy to change the space up every few months.

Lately I have been loving Navy and Yellow. I think the colors together are perfect for SPRING. And kind of nautical – which I love!

So the other day I took the beadboard out and spray painted it navy. Valspar has a reallypretty navy spraypaint — it’s called Indigo. And for less than $3 I changed up the beadboard background.

Once the beadboard was dry, I put the shelves back in place and then added all of my white cake plates. I scoured my kitchen and house and found all of the yellow accessories I could. I also put these little hedgehog measuring cups in the nook – so I can use them in baking. I think they are so cute!

I also took a wooden tray from Target and lined it with some fabric I found the other day at Hobby Lobby. It’s a trendy grey and yellow Ikat. I cut the fabric and then used double-sided tape to attach the fabric onto the tray. I could also have mod podged the material for a more permanent solution.

Another find was a burlap-wrapped glass vase from Hobby Lobby – it has a directional number stenciled on it which I love because it seems nautical. And it was 30% off and perfect for the space. I put some paper striped straws in the vase. So fun!

I also display a few pretty pitchers in the shelves. It makes it really easy to grab things for a meal in a hurry.

I spray painted a few finials and displayed them on the counter too.

I love the new update for my kitchen. 

And I think it looks so pretty along with my the new grey/navy color I just painted my office/craft room in the next room.

I kind of want to paint my whole house navy right now. I’ve even been dressing in yellow and navy – haha!
