Giant Bubbles should be on your Summertime Bucket List!

It is such a fun activity to do with your kids!

Rhonda has a wonderful tutorial on her blog. Because it’s so hot and dry here, we changed a few things up to make our bubbles last longer.

Supplies:

Bubble Solution:

12 cups Purified Water

5 cups Unscented and uncolored Dishwashing Soap ( I used Dawn)

1/2 cup Glycerin (I found mine at Hobby Lobby in the Soap Making Section)

Pour the water into a bucket.

I used a clean plastic container.

Pour the dishwashing soap into the water.

Then mix it gentle with a wooden spoon.

Pour the glycerin in.

Mix gently again. You don’t want ANY bubbles.

Make the Wands:

2 Wooden Dowels ( we used 24″ dowels that I found at Walmart)

2 Eye screws

4 Washers

Cotton String (I started out with 20 pound weight butchers string but found that it was too thick, so ended up using 3 pound weight string I found at Home Depot)

Drill a hole in the end of the dowel.

(I just got a Dremel through the DIY Club, so this was the first thing I used if for and it worked great!)

Eye Hook

Screw the Eye Hook into the hole you just drilled until it is secure.

Cut a 100 inch piece of cotton string

And another piece of string that is 70 inches. (you can make the string as long or short as you like — as long as one string is longer than the other — we wanted our bubbles BIG

Put the four washers through the 100 inch string

Put the ends of both pieces of string through one of the eye hooks and tie a knot. Do the same thing on the other eye hook. Now you should have a long string and a shorter one that runs from one dowel to the other.

Take your bucket outside.

Put the end of the dowels in the bucket and the string should be submerged.

Bring the ends of the dowels up from the bubble solution, together until about chest high.

Then separate the dowels by pulling them outward so the string makes a triangle — pointing down. The washers will weigh the center of the bottom string down.

Step backward quickly so that the air goes through the bubble solution between the dowels and makes a bubble.

Giant Bubble Making Tips

**it takes quite a few times to get the hang of it. But once you figure it out, there are hours of fun to be had!!

** You may have to ‘tweak’ the bubble solution a little depending on where you live. We had to add more glycerin that was in most of the recipes that we found in order to get our bubbles to last longer. I think this is because we live in a very dry climate.

Welcome to the Summer of Paper series – where we’ve invited fabulous guests to create projects using supplies from my Home + Made paper decor line.

Hi Everyone! I’m Holly from Holly & Company and I am so excited to be sharing this project with you. I’m a jack of all trades crafter who dabbles in scrapbooking, sewing and photography. I also really enjoy digital design and even make free printables on occasion, you can find those here. My family moved to Texas a year ago and we enjoying being immersed in all things Texas.

Summer in Texas brings high temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms, which means we actually spend a fair amount of summer vacation indoors. We fill the time inside with reading books, watching movies, testing out new recipes and probably most importantly, crafts.

When I saw this collection, I knew the chalkboard paper would be so fun to use with metallic pens and markers. The matte black surface is a perfect blank slate for creativity. I decided these chalkboard paper crowns would be a perfect way to use that blank slate.

Supplies:

Pebbles Home+Made 12×12 Paper Pad

Pebbles Home+Made adhesive backed flowers

Pebbles Home+Made jewel stickers

Metallic Markers

Gold glitter tape

scissors or electronic die cutter (I used a Silhouette SD)

To make your own dazzling paper crowns…

First, gather all your supplies. Bright colors, metallic and glitter show up beautifully on the dark backgrounds. We used markers, jewels, tape and flowers. You could also use confetti, stickers and any other bits you can find.

Second, cut out your crown. I used a shape from the Silhouette store, but you could easily draw one and cut it out by hand.

     Third, decorate!

Finally, enjoy being the envy of all your friends. Seriously, we had such a fun time making these. The best part about crafts like these is there are no rules! Anything goes. This is a perfect play date activity, because the kids can’t wait to wear the crowns while playing pretend. As you can see, a princess dress was required to show off her beautiful creation.

I hope you enjoyed my tutorial. I love being able to use paper crafting supplies for projects outside the normal scrapbooking realm. It’s ideas like these that make me happy I have a stash of craft supplies to use. If you don’t have little ones to do this craft with, you could also do this for a wedding shower, birthday party or even a girl’s night in!

***********

Thanks Holly! I just love this cute idea for a kid craft, and it’s so pretty, it would be fun for a girl’s night too!
Holly has great ideas on her blog, here are a few I think you’ll love:

I wanted to make this a very inexpensive craft because budgets are tight around this time of the year. (Especially when the 8 year old throws a surprise request for a $130 Lego set to Santa. WHA?!)

Anyway, I’m keeping my extracurricular activities on the cheap. Like dollar store cheap. I got almost all of my supplies at the dollar store (we have Dollar Tree in my neck of the woods). Many of you may have this stuff already in your house which makes it even cheaper!

What you need:

Glass Jar (mine are from Dollar Tree but you could use an old pickle jar or jelly jar, whatever you have around)

Kosher Salt (mine is from Dollar Tree but maybe you already have some? (I did but forgot, duh…)

Bottle Brush type Christmas tee (supposedly Dollar Tree had these but I didn’t see any, I got this package of 2 for .75 cents at Menards! (Less than a $1, take that Dollar Tree!) Look near the Christmas Village items at Menards.

Glue gun or super glue. (already had it and surely Dollar Tree has some generic super glue)

Jute Rope or Ribbon (I already had it but Dollar Tree does carry a smaller roll of it)

These only cost me about $2.55 each. But, if you have a jar and some salt already they will only cost .37 cents a piece! How’s that for cheap?!

Since I tend to get sloppy with the glue gun I used a paper plate underneath to catch any drips and all those crazy tiny strings of glue. To get started put a good size dab of hot glue on the inside of the lid. Since my boys are too young to handle a glue gun I did this for them. They were happy to let me do it. (I think I have scared them to death of the glue gun with all my threats of “Never touch this or it will burn your skin off !!” but hey, they’ve never touched it

Stick your tree on the dab of hot glue and push it down so the glue spreads out under the base.

While the glue is drying, start the fun part of adding snow to your jar. At this point, if your kids are helping you your paper plate becomes worthless as a table cover but salt is easy to clean up so don’t sweat it.

You can add as much or as little “snow” as you like. One of the boys went a little crazy claiming it was a blizzard and filled the jar almost all the way up. I talked him out of the snow storm so we could actually see the tree.

Action shot… it’s snowing!!

Since the hot glue only takes a few minutes for it to dry completely they were ready after the snowstorm was cleared out. If you use super glue you may have to wait longer, you want it to be completely dry.

Have your kiddo turn the tree upside down and insert the tree into the jar. Screw the lid on tight (mommy helped with that, that could be a huge mess of salt snow!) Then they can flip it over and enjoy their “hard” work making beautiful water-less snow globes!

I tied a casual bow with some jute rope around the bottom just to dress it up a little. These were so easy and cheap I’m thinking about making a few more. It was the perfect craft for my boys on a cold Saturday morning (did you notice their pajamas?)

I’m so pleased with these, I think they are cute enough to keep out all winter!

I’ve lived all over the country. Born in Las Vegas, jr. high and high school in Iowa, a summer in Kentucky, college years in Utah and now I’m settled in fabulous Orange County, California. I’m married to my college sweetheart and we have two crazy munchkins. I’m a second grade teacher, turned creative blogging enthusiast, and I tend to the obsessive – just ask my husband I have an Etsy shop, do day care full time, and love blogging on my crafty blog.

Today I’m sharing a fun summer project that I’ve been wanting to make for a long time.

I found the towels over a year ago at a Black Friday sale and I just knew they’d come in handy one day. It’s the Surfer’s Poncho – or a new spin on the classic and much loved, hooded towel.

We have swimming lessons starting in a week and one thing that drives me crazy is the dragging of the towels across the parking lot or the crying 2 year old because she can’t keep her towel on and she’s “freezing”. The insanity!!!! So I was brainstorming with my husband about the problem – he’s a good sounding board – and he said, “You should make a surfer’s towel.” And I was like, huh? He explained that surfers cut holes in the top of a towel so they have a makeshift changing room on the beach. The towels don’t fall off – because they are poncho style. So I changed the plans a little bit and this is what I came up with.

Surfer Poncho Tutorial:

What you’ll need:

1 large towel

1 hand towel

thread

sewing machine

STEP ONE: Fold your hand towel in half. You can use the decorative edge or a finished edge of the towel to save you the time of having to “hem” the outside edge. Lay your pattern down and pin. I used a hood from a hooded towel we already had to make my pattern.

STEP TWO: Cut your hood pieces out, cutting a little extra for seam allowance if you didn’t already allow for that in the sizing. I added extra, because the pattern was actually for my daughter’s towel and my son has a BIG-ger head

STEP THREE: Sew around the outside edge where the arrows outline. I sewed a 1/4″ seam allowance with a zig zag stitch and then went over the seam again with a straight stitch.

STEP FOUR: Fold your towel in half lengthwise to form the poncho. Then, find the center of the folded edge. You could measure and be exact, but I folded it in half again and marked with a pin.

STEP FIVE: Use the neck hole of a shirt and make a pattern piece for the neck opening. You can also estimate and eye it if you’re comfortable with that.

STEP SIX: Open up your neck opening and pin down the front half of the ellipse. Then sew a 1/4″ seam around the pinned edge – again I did a zig zag and then a straight stitch.

STEP SEVEN: Find the center of the back part of the ellipse and mark with a pin. Then match the center of the hood to the center of the ellipse and pin the hood to the poncho right sides together.

STEP EIGHT: Sew the hood to the poncho with a 1/4″ seam. I did a zig zag and went back over with a straight stitch. Woohoo! Now you have a Surfer Poncho!

STEP NINE: Time to add the pocket. I grabbed my son’s sweatshirt and took a pattern from the pocket.

STEP TEN: Cut a little extra for seam allowances, then fold the edges under where the arrows are and sew down the raw edge so you have a finished edge.

STEP ELEVEN: Position in the pocket where you’d like it to lay. Then, holding the top edge of the pocket in place, flip the pocket up toward the hood, so that with right sides are together now. Sew with a 1/4″ seam along the top seam – that looks like the bottom seam of the pocket right now.

STEP TWELVE: After you’ve sewn the top seam, flip it back down and sew the bottom portion down, leave the holes open for the pocket.

And there you have it – The Surfer’s Poncho!

Greetings, TT&J readers!

I’m honored to be posting here on Jen’s great blog today!

My name is Rhonda, aka Mrs. Greene, which is also the name of my blog.

I live in a wee little town in Michigan with my awesome husband and our two kitties, Merlin and Abracadabra.

I dabble in all kinds of craft disciplines, including making dollhouse miniatures. Today I am going to share with you how to make some very quick and convincingly realistic lace curtains to dress up your dollhouse windows!

You will need:

Lace yardage (old lace curtains or a tablecloth will work well and can be found cheaply at thrift stores)

Lace trim

Bamboo skewer

4 pony beads

Straight pins

Needle & thread

Glue

Ribbon

Scissors

Start by cutting two curtain panels to fit your window. They should each measure about 2 inches longer than you want the finished curtains to hang and at least as wide as the width of the window.

Place the panels so that they overlap slightly along the sides and place the bamboo skewer across the top.

Fold the top edge of the lace over the skewer and pin it into place.

Cut a piece of lace trim the same width as the pair of panels.

Flip the panels over so that the pinned edge is facing down. Lay the lace trim across the top of the panels and pin it into place. Carefully hand-sew along the line of pins through all three layers of lace.

To make a mounting bracket for your curtain rod, stack and glue two pony beads together as shown, with one on its side resting in the hole of the other. Repeat with a second pair of beads.

Glue the ends of the curtain rod (with the curtain on it) into the bead brackets. Be careful to make sure both brackets are glued to the rod at the same angle and make sure that the rod is trimmed to slightly wider than the window before gluing.

To hang the curtains, glue the brackets to the dollhouse wall just above the window. If desired, tie back the curtains with short lengths of ribbon. Your window is now dressed and ready to compliment the rest of your tiny decor!

Wow Rhonda – that is so cool!

Hello~ We are Amy and Bri, of The Savvy Moms Guide.
{Two average moms who enjoy making the EveryDay SAVVY}We have found that Spray Paint, Scrapbook Paper and Fabric can give anything a face lift. The Dollar Bin at Target is better than a Sale Rack at Nordstrom’s (well maybe not, but that is what we tell our husbands). Pictures of family are Priceless compared to Framed Art (and cheaper). And nothing is better than Starbucks……but you can live without it, as long as you have a good Coffee Creamer.

We Love Play Dates and Parties, Decor and Design, and creating Perfection for Pennies. But Play Dates are kind of our ‘thing’.

Webster defines a play date as~an arranged appointment for children to get together for a few hours to play. While this is true, we wanted more.

And so began our Savvy Play Parties…the Ultimate play date!!!
A Savvy Moms play party is one that is creative, interactive, educational, fun, healthy and delicious, all at the same time. And every month we host one! We always want our followers to feel like they can create the parties we share. Our Play Parties are filled with Penny Projects, EveryDay Finds and DIY creations.

With that we present to you our
“Rock of Love” Play Party.
A day filled with Savvy Stylings that we hope ‘Makes your heart Sing’.

For this Play Party we wanted to take the traditional Valentine’s colors and theme and incorporate a bit of edgy rock. We were able to use records that we had from home and accent with leopard scrapbook paper to create that Rock of Love look we were going for.

We have been seeing glass bottles used in many photo shoots, parties and dessert tables lately. We love the look. So we had no problem buying a case of Starbucks Frappucinos and using the re-purposed bottles for the kids Strawberry milk. We added some leopard scrapbook paper from Jo-Anns and glitter heart stickers from the Target Dollar bins to create a sweet treat for the kids to enjoy. And the best part is we will use these bottles again and again!

We like to always include some sort of healthy snack for the kids that is fun and compliments the theme. So we cut up fruit and used a heart shape cookie cutter and placed them in fun plastic cups we found at the Dollar Tree and accented with leopard ribbon.

Another Signature ‘Savvy Moms’ idea are Place mats.
We think it is a great way for the kids to get excited about what they are doing if they have something in front of them that is personalized and themed. To create these place mats, and usually all of our Play Party place mats, we use 12×12 sheets of scrapbook paper, usually found in the Target Dollar bins or what we may have laying around. We used our Silhouette to cut out each kiddos initials, place onto a doilie and covered with contact paper.

We found these Valentine Trees at Jo-Anns and used them as our Rock Candy Tree, hanging Ring Pops off of them.

Our cupcake topper printables were created for us by our talented photographer Donella, of Ella B Photography. These were a ‘rockin’ touch to our yummy cupcakes made by our good friend Jamie of Kolby Kakes.

We followed the tutorial on how to make a cupcake stand, replaced the plates with records and added a touch of leopard and glitter heart stickers from the target Dollar bins creating one Savvy cupcake stand. We also used records and turned them into serving trays for the cookies, clever and creative!

No Valentine’s Celebration is complete without a Valentine exchange.
When we saw these Adorable Heart Pockets on One Charming Party we knew they were perfect. Savvy and Simple just the way we like it!

Each of our Play Parties also includes a coordinating story. So we read ‘The Night Before Valentine’s Day’ while they ate their Valentine treats.

We found a great recipe over at Parenting.com for Cupcake Microphones that fit the theme perfectly!! Some serious faces, but they truly made their ‘Hearts Sing’!

These microphones can also be turned into Valentine topiaries. Just get yourself a metal bucket (found in Target Dollar bins most of the time) or a planters pot and stick into foam, rocks or sand and use for decor for your home or next party.

My blog is about to get a makeover and a name change. Currently Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow but soon to be Hoot Designs.

This super fun purse is great for a young girl or with a long strap can be worn to dress up an outfit of yours.

The supplies are super simple, many you might already have. Buttons, sequins, ribbon, felt, $1 gloves, oval glass beads and puffy paint.

In this photo it shows buttons as “rings” and dotted fingertips. Really here is no right or wrong with this project.

Now you need your “flap” for the purse, which you will want to be able to get inside of. This is simply cut from felt with pinking sheers and hand sewn to the back part of the opening of the glove. Cut it as wide as the wrist of your glove. I made it with a fold making it two ply which you will eventually hot glue together to seal the threads inside. It also makes the flap more stable. I hand stitched it to the glove edge across the fold of the flap.

The left photo shows the flap unembellished and on the right with the oval glass beads attached with E6000 glue and a few sequins added with a needle and thread. The same paint on the fingers and dotted around the trim is also used to make the snowman’s buttons and face features.

Here is another variation, dots for a ring and the addition of the felt hat. The colors you choose and the decorations you can add are endless!

After all your embellishments are added you can add a ribbon for your strap. This can be hot glued to the flap inside seams before you hot glue it shut around the edges.

Today we’d like to share our Frozen Outdoor Ice Ornaments with you!

Why not bring a little holiday cheer and color to the trees in your yard? I love these frozen outdoor ornaments! The way the ice sparkles in the sunlight, and the bright colors of cranberries and citrus slices really add some pizazz to our yard. They were an extra fun project because we made them as a family.

To make some for your yard, first gather your supplies: you’ll need various containers to freeze the ornaments in (I just collected the cans from a week’s worth of cooking: cans from tomatoes, beans, even tuna fish), some yarn or string, scissors, various slices of citrus fruit, cranberries, evergreen sprigs, pine cones, sticks—whatever you have on hand. I even added some cilantro to some and liked the way it turned out. I think bay leaves would also look lovely.

Then start filling your containers! This is a perfect project for kids—they can place everything in the containers haphazardly and the ornaments still turn out beautifully. Once the containers are full of the items you’ve prepared, then fill them with water.

For this ornament, I wanted to make it hollow so I placed a can full of rocks inside a larger can, then all around the edges I placed red sticks I clipped from a bush I have out front.

When your ornaments are ready to be frozen, place loops of yarn or string in them so that there will be a loop to hang them on the trees with.
Hello! My name is Madeline, and I’m the crazy crafter from over at Buttons and Bangles. Ok, so first, I wanna tell you how EXCITED I am to be guest posting over here at Tatertots and Jello! When Jen contacted me a few months ago asking me if I’d like to be a guest blogger over there, I literally squealed with delight, and then of course said Yes!

So, First I’ll tell ya a bit about me. I’m 12 years old, I homeschool, I love the Lord Jesus, and I am absolutely ADDICTED to crafting/sewing! I started sewing around the beginning of this year, after finding Disneys’ blog, Ruffles and Stuff. I have just been sewing away since then Also, This is my first EVER time to guest post, So I hope it makes sense

Today I’m gonna share with you how to make these cute Holiday Ruffled Coasters!

As most of you know, December is usually the busiest month of the year, and most people are always having having company over! So, I figured some coasters would be fun to do, just to use at your house, or to tie up in some ribbon and give as a gift!

What you need:

A few different fabrics, about 1/8-1/4 yard each

4 tiles(Hexogon is all I had, But I would’ve used square)

Cork(by the roll)

Mod Podge

All normal Sewing Necessities

1. Make sure your tiles are clean, and ready to go!

2. Measure around your tile, as for we need to figure out our ruffle strip measurements. My tile was 14 inches around, therefor my strips were 28 in. long, and about 3/4 in. wide. Cut all 4 strips.

3. Ruffle your fabric! Make sure you don’t make it any shorter than the length of your tiles.Mine was 14 in.

4. Now take all the fabric that you are gonna use for your tiles, and cut a square of fabric to fit each tile. We’ll mod podge it on, and trim the rest of later, once it drys.

5. Got everything ready? Now it’s time to Mod Podge

6. Spread a layer of mod podge on your tile, and put the fabric on it, then coat the top. Repeat with the next 3. Once the first layer of Mod Podge drys, repear with another 1-2 layers.

7. Now take a tile, and using an exacto knife, trace and cut out 4 cork bottoms for the tile. If you haven’t cut through cork before, don’t worry, as long as it’s not to think, it really isn’t hard!

8. Now it’s time to trim the excess fabric around the tile off! You can do this with either an exacto knife, or with a pair of good scissors.

9. The next thing you need to glue the cork to bottom of the tiles, You can use either Gorilla glue or Hot glue, Gorilla glue would probably hold better, although that takes longer to dry! I used Hot glue, But if it doesn’t hold up, then I’ll go back through with gorilla glue!

10. Now, take your Hot glue gun, and put a strip of glue about 1/2 inch from the edge, and glue the ruffle, just glue as you go! Complete with the rest of them!

You’re done! Pretty easy, right? I hope the tutorial made sense! Now, go find a place in your house for them, or wrap em up and give em as a gift!
