There’s something comforting about the sound of a screen door opening and closing. Plus it keeps the bugs out. I love feeling a cool breeze in the evening. We are enjoying our covered porch so much, I want to keep the door to the house open onto the porch but the flies keep coming in. So I decided to install a screen door. I love the look of a wood screen door.

So I headed over to Lowes. They have the cutest unfinished screen doors. I used one when I made the entryway organizers a couple of years ago. The one I used is called the Creekside Screen Door. And for under $35 I think it’s a great price. You will also want to pick up a Screen Door Hinge Kit – it will have hinges, screws and a pull.

So if you have ever wondered how to install a screen door, I am going to walk you through the steps!

I painted my door black because the interior door was black and I wanted them to match.

1. Measure your door. I assumed mine was 36 inches only to get it home to discover that my opening is only 32 inches. Make sure to measure.
2. Get your tools together. You will need a screwdriver or drill, a measuring tape, pen or pencil.
3. Look at the existing door, which way does the door open? You will probably want your screen door to open the same way.
4. Measure where your hinges will lay on the door. I put mine 5 inches from the top of the door and 10 inches up from the bottom of the door.
5. Make a mark at those points on the door and then lay the hinges on the marks and mark where the holes will go with a pencil or pen.
6. Drill pilot holes where you marked the hinge holes.
7. Lay the hinges on the door and screw in the screws into the pilot holes.
8. For this step you need another person. Take the screen door over to the door frame and line it up. You want at least 1/8 of an inch at the sides of the door and 1/4 inch space at the top and bottom of the door. If you need to trim down the sides do this before you hang it up.
9. Have someone hold the door in the correct position, mark where the hinge holes are with a pen or pencil. Then drill pilot holes. Screw the screws into the door frame.
10. Install your door pull. I put a pretty pull on my door. But if you buy the screen door hardware kit it comes with a basic pull.
11. Enjoy your new door!

The screen door is so homey. Some people dropped by my house the night after I installed the screen door and they loved the screen door. Yay!
