Clean up ONE Area in Your Home Week!

This year we are switching things up a little bit. Instead of taking one space a day all over the house, we are concentrating on one area each week and cleaning those areas instead of jumping around. The first week is the kitchen, then we are moving on to bathrooms, then main rooms in the home, then bedrooms and closets and general cleaning the last few days. I will be sharing cool cleaning and organizing gadgets as as I share each days challenge on my Instagram channel – @TATERTOTSANDJELLO. So make sure to follow along to keep up on the challenge. And tag me so I can share YOUR organized spaces!!

Organized Spaces

If there is a day on the calendar that doesn’t fit to YOUR home, just substitute another space for that day. For example, we don’t have a garage at our new home. So on the garage clean out day I will substitute our laundry room for that day.

How to Organize a No-Closet Entryway

Our home was built in 1891 which gives it so much character and quirkiness, but it also presents some issues, one of which is a back entryway which is very small and has no closet for coats and shoes. It’s been a cluttered problem since we moved in four years ago. Now that most of our big home renovating projects are done, I decided it was finally time to tackle this messy space in our home.

Tight Entryway Challenges

The way our back entryway is designed, the door we use to enter is in the middle of a narrow hallway that leads to our back pantry and laundry room. There’s only 36 inches of space and the door opens inwards so there isn’t much room to work with. Previously I had placed a narrow bench and some hooks in the hallway, but the bench was always cluttered with items the kids dumped on their way in. I had baskets for shoes under the bench but even when the shoes were in the baskets, the piles of shoes sticking up always seemed very messy.

A Place For Shoes in the Entryway

Since we started our airbnb on the floor below, taking our shoes off has become a necessity to keep the noise to a minimum. Therefore, having shoe and coat storage became my priorities in redesigning the entryway.

Shoe Storage Cabinets

Ikea has some pretty attractive show storage cabinets, and I was considering them. Then I found the perfect cabinets online! These shoe cabinets come in a few different color options and sizes.

Boho Modern Shoe Cabinets

The shoe cabinets I found are so stylish! I chose the black finish with natural rattan inserts. And I love the shape of the rattan inserts. They are so sleek and go perfectly with the boho cottage feel of our home.

What are the Shoe Cabinet Dimensions?

I chose these cabinets because they are so slim! Each cabinet measures 6.7″ deep x 23.6″ wide and 29.1″ high. Three of the cabinets put together are the same width as our wall.

How to Attach Multiple Shoe Cabinets Together

Our home is over 130 years old. so attaching the shoe cabinets together to look seamless was a little harder than normal. The cabinets come with long screws and wall anchors which makes attaching them to the wall so easy. Our floor slopes so we had to adjust the cabinets to accommodate the sloping while making sure they were level. We attached the first cabinet using the screws and anchors provided. Then we lined up the next cabinet and made sure it was level. As our floor slopes, we had to get creative. We ended up attaching all three shoe cabinets and two of the cabinets needed spacers under the feet because the floor sloped. I found clear feet adjusters that I put under the feet on two of the cabinets. We attached all three cabinets with wall anchors and screws that came with the cabinets, but added a few more screws so that the two cabinets that need spacers are attached at the wall securely. You honestly can’t tell that they are basically floating; and more importantly, the cabinets all line up together seamlessly and are level.

Add Coat Hooks

When we had the bench in the space before, we had hooks on the left side of the bench and a mirror on the right. We took the hooks off the wall and attached them on the opposite wall for less clutter. Then we centered the mirror above the three cabinets.

My Favorite Cordless Rechargeable Lamp

The cabinets are perfect for displaying flowers. I also wanted to have a small light that can be kept on at night. Since the wall doesn’t have any outlets, I had to get creative. I found the MOST adorable mushroom lamp that is CORDLESS and rechargeable! It also has three different shades of white light. You just touch the button at the base of the lamp to turn it on. Then tap the button again to choose which shade of white you want the lamp to display. How cool is that?? It’s perfect for a wall that doesn’t have an outlet. Our front entry room doesn’t have any outlets, so I am going to order a lamp for that entry too!

Fabulous January Ideas

Hi friends!! Happy weekend! How was your Christmas and New Years? We had such an amazing time. My son and his partner came and stayed. It was so nice to have all of my kids together for the holidays! I’m so excited for 2023 and all of the projects and ideas this coming year. I was out showing houses all day and it was so fun. We found a cute place for my clients and sent a contract over tonight! Cozy Home and Organizing Ideas: Welcome Home Weekend

How was your week, friends? This week went by so fast! Our kitten Pumpkin is on day #23 of her FIP medicine. She is doing so well! We switched her over from injections to pills and I’m so glad we did! She was allergic to the injection liquid and her poor little face was swelling up and she itched huge sores on her ears and neck. Luckily she is not allergic to the pills and is almost not itching now!

New Year Office Organizing! I organized my office nook with new baskets, tags and a bright and happy new look!

New Year Office Organizing

Happy January, friends!! Do you love getting your home neat and tidy for the new year?? I love it and I’ve had a really awesome January Declutter Challenge for the past 5 years! We tackle one space each day and by the end of January our whole house is so organized and clean!

Office Decluttering

This week, one of the spaces we are tackling is our office/create space! Right before Christmas I wallpapered one side of my office and I love the happy pink feeling the wallpaper brought to my creative space. But my office nook was frankly a big mess. So I teamed up with Hobby Lobby to transform my office nook!

I headed over to Hobby Lobby to find some items to help with my office makeover. Hobby Lobby has so many great organizing items in their Home Decor Section! There are all kinds of baskets, shelves, hooks and containers to get your home organized!

How to Create a Office Nook

I turned a corner of my craft room into an office nook! It’s so easy to do. You can turn almost any corner or any room into an efficient place to work and it can also be used as a study space for your kids!

Create a Work Station

Start with a desk and shelves. Add as many shelves as you have room for on your wall. We have super high ceilings so I added three. You can see the before picture of how my nook looked. I loved the wallpaper but it did make my space seem darker and smaller than it does with the fresh white walls.

Add Containers to Hold Office Supplies

I found these Hyacinth Baskets with White Bottoms in the Home Decor section at Hobby Lobby. I love the contrast of natural material with the painted bottoms. They also come in two different sizes which was perfect for my shelves.

Corral Smaller Items in Smaller Containers

I found these white plaster pots also in the Home Decor section. I love how light the white pots look and the plaster texture is so interesting. I used one of the smaller pots to hold my pens and it’s so accessible right next to my keyboard. I used two more of the same pots and put faux flowers in those.

Organize Your Containers with Tags

I found wood tags in Hobby Lobby’s wood section. I printed labels on the tags and hung them on the baskets with pretty ribbon. Hobby Lobby’s ribbon is my favorite. And want to know a secret?? It’s almost always on sale 40% off every other week! I use their ribbon for projects all year round!

Add Pretty Elements to Your Shelves

I added a few of my favorite things to the shelves. My peg family is so sweet. I also added a little house my daughter gave me. Then on the tallest shelf I added one of my favorite wall art pieces, Pink Floral Wood Print. I love how it ties the pinks in the ribbon and tags, along with the pink faux flowers and my office chair.

Turn an Architectural Piece into a Photo Display

The last thing I did was I turned the Floral Cut Out Wood Wall Decor piece into a photo holder/mood board. I love cutting out magazine photos and displaying them as I brain storm project ideas. You can also slip photos, business cards or to-do lists into the grooves of this wall piece and it’s pretty as well as functional. I spray painted it a light pink to go with the colors in the floral print!

I also framed a picture of my husband and I on our wedding day to go on my desk!

Welcome Home Weekend

Hi, friends! How is your January going?? It’s been a busy week around here. I’ve been organizing like crazy while taking care of my sick kitten! On Sunday we took her into the emergency vet where she was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. I’ve been giving her antibiotics and hand-feeding and giving her water in a syringe. But her fever is gone and I think she is making progress!

Cozy Winter decorating Ideas

This week I shared some easy ways to transition your home from the holidays to winter. I have found that adding some cozy winter elements makes it easier when I take my holiday decor down. A Small Bathroom that is BIG on Organization

Hi! I’m so glad you’re here! Today I am sharing our NEW bathroom that is almost done! We’ve been remodeling our 1891 home for the past two years. We started on our main floor, then went downstairs and built a new apartment and Airbnb that we just listed. And now finally we are tackling our main bedroom and bathroom! I am so thrilled! The time spent on other remodeling projects gave me time to really think about our main bathroom and how to maximize the storage in our small room.

Decide What Items are Most Important in Your Bathroom

Since our home is 140 years old, we don’t have a giant master bathroom like new homes today have. Of course you can always make a big change by moving walls around. With the layout of our home moving walls around wasn’t an option. We have a staircase that runs right behind where the shower is and a hallway behind the wall where the staircase begins. So we worked with what we had. I also wanted a tub in our space. To make a tub possible we had to flip the vanity to the other side of the room and there was only room for a small vanity. I decided that giving up a double vanity was worth it to be able to have a beautiful clawfoot tub!

And as you see above, having the double vanity on the angled wall made the mirror look really strange. There was no way to have full size mirrors on that wall either. Because I knew we would lose storage space by going from a double vanity to a single vanity, I decided to make up storage space in other ways in the room!

Bathroom Organization: Create More Storage

We built shelves inside of the studs on one wall of our bathroom. This gave us SO much more storage! We actually have more storage now than we had when we had a larger vanity. My friend Frank at Frank Smith Renovations built custom shelves for the storage space and tied the shelves in with the shelf he built on the wall behind the tub and the bathroom window too! I found the baskets at Ikea and they are a pretty good size. I am on the lookout for baskets that are the same height but a little wider and be more efficient on the shelves.

Bathroom Organization: Group Like Items Together

I organized the baskets on the shelves by keeping like items in each basket. That way I can remember what is in the baskets and find the items easily.

The first basket has extra towels.

The second basket has extra toilet paper.

The third basket has extra toiletries

Things like like q-tips, cotton balls, extra face rounds and flossers, etc. I can restock the containers we have of those with these.

The fourth basket has our travel kits

Plus extra things like extra toothpastes, shampoos, lotions, etc.

Bathroom Organization: Pick a Cabinet That Maximizes Storage

As I was deciding on a cabinet, I really tried to think of how we would use it. I decided that I want BOTH drawers and a cupboard. I like drawers to keep my makeup and smaller things. But we also have large sized lotions, hairsprays and mouthwash that are too tall to keep in a drawer. So my husband and I each have one drawer for our personal things and then we share the cabinet.

Bathroom Organization: Maximize Cupboards

There is so much space wasted in bathroom vanity cupboards. I bought a adjustable shelf for the cupboard. The shelf can be adjusted both vertically and horizontally so it’s great for almost any size bathroom vanity cupboard. I ended up having to flip it upside down and sideways to make it work since the sink and plumbing takes up a lot of room inside of our cupboard. But the shelf makes it so I can maximize the space we do have!

Bathroom Organization: Use Clear Containers Inside Cupboards

I ordered all kinds of sizes of clear containers to organize our new bathroom. The larger ones work great inside the cupboard. I keep extra makeup and things I don’t use everyday in the clear container at the back of the cupboard. Then I put extra washcloths in the clear container in front so I can access them easily. On the bottom shelf I keep lotions that we can both access easily. On the other side of the shelves is a small space that is tall and that is where I keep a clear container with all of my hair supplies — hairsprays, oils, leane-in conditioner, etc.

Bathroom Organization: Use Clear Containers in Drawers

Since we each only have one drawer, I really wanted to use the space wisely. Instead of throwing everything inside the drawer, I used small clear containers to corral items. I keep my everyday makeup in my drawer. I have a container with my foundation, one for powders, one for misc. eyeliners and concealer and one for lipsticks.

My husband has clear containers with his medicine, shaver and things he uses every day. I also used small clear containers inside the medicine cabinet to hold razors and creams.

Bathroom Organization: Maximize Open Shelves

Our vanity has an open shelf on the bottom. Instead of putting pretty things on the shelf I store FOUR pretty baskets full of all kinds of useful things! Here are the baskets. And the vanity is deep enough that I can stack the baskets two deep and it holds so much!

Basket one: This basket is behind the front ones. So I keep things in it that I don’t need to access everyday. This basket has assortment of hair bands and headbands.

Basket two: This basket is also behind the front basket, on the other side. I keep my Red Apen nails in this bin since I only need to access the basket every week or so.

Basket three: This is one of the front baskets. I keep all of my hair tools in this basket — hair dryer, curling irons, flat iron.

Basket four: This also is a front basket. I keep my eyelashes, face masks and vitamins in this basket and it’s easily accessible.

Bathroom Organization: Medicine Cabinet

If you have a small bathroom I HIGHLY recommend a medicine cabinet!! I’ve had one at my last three homes and honestly, I am ALWAYS going to have a medicine cabinet. And medicine cabinets now are really pretty!

The one I chose is from Pottery Barn and looks just like a mirror. We built the wall out a few inches so we could sink it into the wall and you can’t tell that it’s a medicine cabinet. Magical storage!

I used the clear containers in the medicine cabinet. I love the clear round containers with lids! I put q-tips, cotton balls, washable face cloths and dental picks in them. These are items we use every day and they are accessible and so pretty! I linked all of the sources at the bottom of the post!

Bathroom Organization: Maximize Vertical Space

If you have a small bathroom, utilize your vertical space! Luckily our 1891 home has HUGE ceilings. I think the bathroom ceilings are 10 feet tall. So even though the space is small it seems bigger because of the high ceilings. I utilized the tall ceilings by installing the tallest medicine cabinet I could find! This Pottery Barn XX large medicine cabinet is 40 inches tall! It holds so much! I keep things we use every day inside like our toothbrushes, my contact solution, creams,

Bathroom Organization: Keep Counters Clean

To keep our bathroom feeling larger and open I organize everything inside of the shelves and vanity so I don’t have to keep anything on the counters except for our soap and lotion. I love a dual soap and lotion set on a stand like this one. Having a stand to keep the soap and lotion keeps the counter tidy because they stay together and it looks clean and organized!

Small Bathroom Tip: Swap Out Your Door

We took out the door that swung into the bathroom and replaced it with a sliding door. So now instead of losing space to a door, that whole area is opened up! It really makes a difference in a small bathroom.

Bathroom Organization: Maximize Towel Space

Since we built the shelf unit into the one big wall we had, I didn’t have a wide enough wall for a towel rod. I ordered a sleek metal ladder and since we don’t have the door that swings inwards anymore, now I can tuck the ladder in the corner to keep our towels. I also like that it can be moved. So if I am taking a bath, I can lean the tower over closer to the tub to grab a towel!

Add Elements You Love to Your Bathroom

Once I had the organization figured out, then I added things I love to this new bathroom! I love adding the plants and candles to the wall we built! We planked the bottom vertically and the top horizontally and I think it draws the eye upwards. I added a gorgeous minimal globe light with a black stained top. I love it! The black and white graphic floor echoes the hex floors that were put in houses this age but gives the floors a graphic, modern feel! I can’t wait to move our bed in and soak in my new tub!
