Christmas Garland to Valentine Wreath

Do you decorate for Vaentine’s Day? I love bringing happy red and pink color into our home to brighten up the winter blahs! Here’s an idea that costs almost nothing! Upcycle a Christmas garland into a pretty Valentine wreath!

Upcycle Old Holiday Decor

Over the past few years my holiday decor has evolved from traditional red and white to COLORFUL Christmas. So as I was thinking about Valentine decor ideas I turned to the bin of red and white decor that was waiting to be donated. I had three strands of red and white felt ball garlands that I really still love because of the texture but they didn’t fit into the COLORFUL Christmas theme that I use. So I thought “why not turn these felted ball garlands into a pretty heart wreath that I can use for years to come?”

I am sharing this felted ball heart wreath and my friends are also sharing DIY Valentine ideas that you can make! Scroll down to the bottom of the post and HOP over to see how to make these easy ideas!

How to Turn a Christmas garland into a Valentine Wreath

Now you can use pretty much any type of holiday garland for this idea. You will want to cut the garland pieces apart to see how they will look on your wreath form.

Gather Your Valentine Heart Wreath Supplies

Here are the supplies I used to create this heart Valentine wreath:

• Christmas Garland
• Wreath Form: I used a large heart wreath from Hobby Lobby.
• Ribbon or fabric to wrap around the wreath form. I cut up an old sheet and cut it into 4′ wide pieces.
• Ribbon: I used ribbon from Hobby Lobby
• Glue Gun and Sticks: This is my cordless Ryobi glue gun. I love it!!

How to Turn a Christmas Garland into a Valentine Wreath

Prepare Your Wreath Form

My wreath was covered in sparkly hearts so I had to remove those and then cut off the spokes that held the plastic hearts onto the form.

Wrap Wreath Form in Ribbon or Fabric

I used an old sheet and cut it up into 4-inch wide strips.

Cut Garland Items Apart

I used felted ball garlands. I cut the cord and then put all of the felted balls together. If you are using a different kind of garland, like a red ball garland, do the same thing.

Arrange Largest Items on Wreath Form

I like to arrange things before I commit to gluing them on. That way I can visualize how it will look before I glue. For my project I had garlands with three sizes of felt balls. One garland was all big red felt balls. One was medium red and white balls and the last garland was very small white and red balls. I arranged the big red balls around the wrath form, in a pattern. I think the eye just likes a pattern best and it looks uniform.

Glue Largest Items on Wreath

Once I had it all laid out visually, I glued the balls on the wreath form.

Arrange Smaller Items on Wreath Form

Then I took the medium red and white ball garland and laid the balls out in a pattern. By doing this you can see how it will look and also make sure the whole wreath form is covered evenly.

Then I glued the medium size balls on the form.

Use Small Items to Fill in Holes

I used the smallest ball garland to fill in holes. If you are only using big garland items, you might need to purchase something to fill in the holes. Small balls are a good way to do that.

Add Ribbon

I used a black and white LOVE garland and an off white pom pom garland at the top of the wreath.

Hang Your Wreath Up!

I hung my wreath over our kitchen hood but it would also look great on a front door. However, if your door is exposed to the elements I would not hang a felted ball wreath on the front door. This wreath would look lovely almost anywhere in your home!

Terra Cotta Pots are Inexpensive

You can find terra cotta pots at any hardware store and they come in so many different sizes and shapes! They are also very inexpensive so making this project won’t break the bank!

Spray Paint Terra Cotta Plants for a Farmhouse Look

Spraying terra cotta pots a different color lets you customize them to your color scheme. I used white paint because I love a simple look.

Seal Terra Cotta Pots

Using spray paint transforms terra cotta pots but it also seals the pots which is great. The reason you want to seal terra cotta pots is left untreated they are very porous which makes it harder to keep herbs moist.

Add Stars for a Patriotic Theme

Adding wood stars gives the posts a patriotic theme. I used natural stars that you can buy in a pack of 20. I left them unfinished for a farmhouse or scandinavian simple look! And stars are so cute in the winter at Christmas too!

Grow Fresh Herbs All Year

The thing I love about this project is I can keep my herbs outside in the summer and then bring them in when it gets cold and keep them in my kitchen so I have fresh herbs ALL year long. I think fresh herbs brings so much flavor when cooking!

How to Make Terra Cotta Star Herb Planters

Buy Terra Cotta Pots

I found a great supply of terra cotta planters at my local lowe’s stores. I liked these pots that don’t have a rim. Be sure to buy the accompanying draining plate. This will keep the water from coming out the bottom and damaging whatever they are sitting on.

Spray Paint Terra Cotta Pots

You can use a paint with a primer if you want. I primed my pots and then used a chalk spray paint for a matte finish. Terra cotta is very porous so it will really soak up the paint initially. I sprayed my pots with two coats of primer and two coats of spray paint. I also turned the pots upside down to get the bottom of the pots and plates.

Add Wooden Stars

I used 2-inch nice thick wood stars in this project. I used hot glue to attach the stars to my pots. The hot glue is a little fragile on the hard surface of the pot. So if you use hot glue just be sure to pick up the pots by the bottom and not bump the stars. You can always re-attach any stars with another dab of hot glue if they get dislodged when you move them.

Add Herbs to Your Pots

I added my favorite herbs to my pots but you can also plant houseplants or annual flowers – whatever makes YOU happy!

Place Pots in Your Home or Outside

I keep my herbs in my kitchen since I use the herbs when I cook! You can keep the pots both outside or inside. I think they are so simple and pretty. You can also put them on your front porch, filled with festive red and white flowers and they would be gorgeous for the Fourth of July!!

Beautiful Farmhouse Valentine’s Day Decorating

I love decorating our home. Over the years, Valentine’s Day as become on one of my favorite holidays to decorate for. The bright pink and reds of the holiday syeem to break up the Winter blues for me. Valentine’s Day Be Mine Signs and Mantel

This was one of my favorite Valentine’s Day Mantels. I took 90%-off signs and painted the insides white, then added simple metal letters!

DIY Burlap Valentine’s Day Heart Pillows

Still one of my very favorite projects. These burlap pillow covers were easy to make. I added felt 3-dimensional hearts to the fronts and some pom pom trim to the edges.

A Giant Farmhouse Winter Snowflake is Inexpensive

This giant farmhouse snowflake only costs a few dollars to create. You will love the way it looks in your home! All you need is a few pieces of wood,and some glue to create!

Customize the Size of Your Wood Snowflake

It’s easy to customize the size of the wood snowflake you create! I used pre-cut balsam wood from Lowes. Each piece is 24-inches long. But you can use whatever length wood you want! Make a huge one for your porch! Make small ones to sit on shelves in your kitchen. It’s up to you!

The Secret to Making a Giant Farmhouse Wood Snowflake

It’s all about the angles. I figured out the angles and that’s all you need to know to create this snowflake design. There are three main pieces of the snowflake. One piece is uncut. The other two pieces have angles that create the other arms of the snowflake. One arm has two 45-degree angles. The other has two cuts on each side of the arms that are each 22-degrees and meet at a point.

How to Cut the Pointed Snowflake Arm

The trickiest part of the project is cutting the two snowflake arms that have a point in the middle. What you want to do is cut the entire piece of wood in half. Then take each of those two pieces of wood and cut each side at 22-degree, creating a point in the middle of the end of the wood.

Cut the Snowflake Ends

Each snowflake arm has two ends. Cut wood at 4 inch sections. Then cut each end of the 4-inch piece of wood at 45-degrees, parallel to each other. Each piece of wood has angles that match.

Glue Farmhouse WInter Snowflake Together

Now flip the snowflake over and put it on parchment or newspaper and glue the cut pieces together. You can use wood glue, E6000 or even hot glue. Note — I used E6000 and still had to supplement with hot glue. Wood glue would probably hold better. To make the joints sturdier you can glue a piece of wood or paper over the joint to give it a little more stability.

Add Bright Rugs to Your Cottage Home

Rugs are an easy way to add color to ANY room in your home. I love finding rugs on sale and I switch out my rugs between rooms and bring in new rooms, depending on the season. I roll up the rugs I am not using and keep them in my shed at the top of the shed so they don’t take up much room when I am not using them.

Switch Out Pillow Covers Throughout the Year

Pillow covers are another secret weapon of mine. You can keep the pillow insert and then bring in seasonal or holiday pillow so easily throughout the year. For Fall I made some flannel plaid pillow covers to go with the Seven Pin pillow covers I am using in our family room. Fall is full or GORGEOUS fall colors. Bring them into your home! Add orange and yellow pumpkins, cornstalks, gourds and flowers. Pile pumpkins on your front porch, tabletops and counters. Mums are perfect to add color outside AND inside!

Add Flowers and Natural Elements in Unexpected Places

I added baskets of mums and pumpkins to our steps and I love the POP of color they add to our entryway!

Create a Mantel with Fall Leaves

Another way I incorporated natural fall colors is by cutting some live branches and putting them in a vase. I set the vase on our mantel. I also laid a branch across the mantel. I LOVE the gorgeous colors in the fall leaves this time of year.

Add Bright Fall Flowers

I love fresh flowers. I used a bright and colorful stock pot from MacKenzie-Childs on our stove. Think of using unconventional vessels, especially when displaying flowers in your kitchen. I love the way the fall flowers look in our bright pot!

Spray Paint Dollar Store Items for Fall

I love taking dollar store items and using paint to take them up a notch. This year I took the $1 foam pumpkins and spray painted them PINK. I painted the tops white and added pink and white gingham ribbon. I put those dollar store pumpkins all over the house!

I added those dollar store pumpkins on our table, along with bright flowers in an owl vase, natural pumpkins and some greenery.

Another way I used the PINK dollar store pumpkins is by creating a pretty fall centerpiece for our coffee table. I added some faux greens in a vessel and added a few of the PINK pumpkins.

Add Bright Pumpkins to Your Kitchen

We just added these open shelves in our kitchen. I use then to store spices, salt and pepper containers, baking items and glasses. I added some natural and bright pumpkins to the shelves. I also added some on the counters for COLOR.

A Colorful Life Home Tour

Yesterday I posted a home tour and shared some tips for adding splashes of color across the house. I’m so excited to be participating in the A Colorful Life Home Tour with some of my favorite bloggers!

I love Jennifer’s (from Dimples and Tangles) living room so much! She has such an eye for mixing some of my favorite patterns and textures (the brick around the fireplace, the buffalo check lampshades, and the plaid in bookshelf) while sticking to bright colors and making sure everything looks just perfect.

I love the pops of yellow in Tiffany’s (from My Eclectic Nest) family room! It’s the perfect way to make it playful against the basics of her lovely wooden floor and white walls.

I’m totally obsessed with the hot-pink accent wall Brenda created for her daughters’ room! You can see more about that room and her beautiful bright kitchen over at BD Interiors.

I can’t stop fawning over Carmel’s beautifully bright kitchen. The wood-accented stove hood and the blue of the kitchen island are my two favorite details, but there’s so much more to love.

There’s something so summery and perfect about the patio Camila from Effortless Style Interiors’ redesigned for her mom! There’s nothing like a bright spot to spend the summer afternoons. My absolute favorite place to spend time these days has been my patio!

Shop My Summer Home Tour

I’ve done a little round-up of some of my favorite things from my home tour help you with some inspiration for your own decorating!

Buffalo check table runners have always been one of my favorite dining room accents–and they’re only $7 on Amazon right now!

Another kitchen favorite is a couple of bright turkish cacala towels. They’re available on Amazon too for about $12 in over two dozen different colors.

One of my kids’ favorite things in my living room are these pom throw blankets. They look super cute and are soft enough for kids to cuddle up in for movie night.

A few artificial flowers in key colors can go a long way in decorating and redecorating your house. Here are some fake peonies in a ton of different colors, and they’re only about $10 per bunch!

The first thing you see when you walk up to my front door is this double hanging rattan chair from Serena and Lily. It’s my favorite place to watch the world go by with my husband, kids, or dogs—depending on the day!

I love this bright pink magnolia lattice rug I’ve been using as a runner on my front porch. It’s on super sale for just about $40 right now!

You can also get the bigger version of the rug, as seen in my living room. It’s on a huge sale right now too, just $160 for the 8′ by 10′!

I just got a pair of these Safavieh Dining Chairs from Overstock and I love how they accent my dining room! They’re out of stock on the wooden ones right now, but here is a white version I like just as much.

I’ve had SO many questions about the egg chair in our family room and out on our back patio. I bought TWO because I love it so much!! This Southport Egg Patio chair from Target is one of my all-time favorite pieces of furniture I’ve ever bought. It’s extra wide so two people can sit in it too. And It goes perfect with just about any accent colors and complementary furniture.

Bring Color to Your Cottage or Farmhouse Home

I love color, especially during the Summer. Bright hues just make life feel happier. I added some colorful elements to my cottage home and I am sharing the simple ideas with you today!

A Colorful Life Home Tour

Colorful Front Porch

Welcome to our home! Come right up onto our front porch and have a seat. We hung this swing this Spring and it’s our favorite place to sit and watch the world go by!

Overall this side of the porch is pretty neutral. I brought a little color in with some blooming plants.

Succulent Ladder

Our succulents are having a wonderful summer being outside. I bought this ladder (it was already this awesome shade of turquoise) and added succulents from inside our home.

Bright Boho Rug

The style aesthetic of our avenues homes is boho cottage. I love a simple cottage look but I put a spin on cottage with some bright colorful boho elements, like this bright rug!

Boho Cottage Kitchen

Come into our home. We have a little entryway room and through the door is our kitchen. We are in the middle of renovating it and so excited for the changes already!

Pink Summer Dining Nook

One of the first things we did when we moved in was planked this middle wall and made a dining nook by swagging a light fixture over so it would hang over our dining table against the kitchen wall. We also made an extra long wooden bench that sits against the wall and layered pink and white pillows over the bench.

Add a Bright Table Runner

If you want to bring color instantly into your home a table runner is a great way to do it. I ordered this bright pink runner for color, the buffalo check keeps in the cottage theme.

Tiered Table Centerpiece

To center our bright summer table, I layered some pink flowers along with some elements I already had. A “Home Sweet Home” sign. Then I brought the “home” theme into the centerpiece with some metal and wooden homes that I have collected. I also added some homes to the shelves behind the table!

Kitchen Summer Updates

I added some color in my kitchen with a BRIGHT kitchen runner. It’s outdoor/indoor so it really has held up great!

I also added a pink and white tasseled kitchen towel and some flowers!

Boho Cottage Summer Mantel

We planked our family and room and added a fireplace this spring. I LOVE decorating this mantel. We brought the white planking across the kitchen and into the family room and I love the simplicity of the planks.

I added color to our mantel with a saying from my Pebbles Hey! Hello! line and a simple banner that I created using a piece of the sentiment paper from the line (it’s at JoAnn Stores right now!)

Boho Farmhouse Coffee Table Centerpiece

I LOVE sparkly disco balls. They remind me of the roller rink in junior high. I had a few balls from Christmas but I decided that disco balls can be year-round decor! I love they way they sparkle in the summer sun! I think they add an unexpected, whimsical element to our bright family room.

Colorful Summer Rug and Pillows

A bright run is such an easy way to bring a colorful element into your cottage or farmhouse home.I added this hot pink and orange rug and I LOVE how happy it looks. The trick to adding such a colorful rug is to make it the focal point of the room. If you have too many colorful items they can clash with each other and make your cottage or farmhouse room look chaotic. I brought in some pillows with the same hues that match the rug.

Adding Summer Color to Your Bedroom

We have a pretty traditional rug in our bedroom. I paired it with an upholstered bench with hot pink buffalo check fabric. I love a crisp white bed for summer. I found sheets at Costco for $15 and they are so soft! A white duvet completes the white sheets and makes a neutral canvas to bring ANY color into the room.

I used some bright pink pillows that coordinate with the bench fabric. And a fluffy pink pom pom throw!

Color in the Backyard

Our backyard is also pretty neutral. I love plants and brought color into the space with potted flowers. I love the hanging flower shelves that we added to the backyard this spring. I also spray painted our pots in the spring. I have a tutorial on how to do that — how to spray paint resin pots.

The previous owners left these pots and I love how hot pink spray paint completely changed the look for just a few dollars!

Add Flowers Inside for Color

Bringing flowers inside is an easy way to add color to any area inside your home. There’s nothing like having fresh flowers to brighten anyone’s mood. I also bring color in using “faux” flowers. These pink peonies are so pretty and you can’t tell they are not real unless you really look.

Dollar Spot Modern Farmhouse Holiday Centerpiece

We are so excited to spend our first Christmas in our new home! Everything is still under construction but one area of our home is almost done – the kitchen nook!

18 Gorgeous Holiday Centerpiece Ideas

I’m sharing an easy holiday centerpiece using inexpensive items from Target’s Dollar Spot. And I am joining some talented friends who are also sharing holiday centerpiece ideas. Be sure to scroll down to the end of the post and HOP over to see all of the ideas!!

Make Holiday Memories at the Table

I think the kitchen table is the most important area of our home. That’s why it’s been the first room that we have worked on at the #1891AvenuesCottage. We ship-lapped the wall and added a cozy print from my friends at @SincerelyUs and then added some floating shelves and a comfy black and white checked bench.

Festive Dollar Spot Holiday Centerpiece

When I spotted the new holiday items at the Dollar Spot, I found some things that I really loved. I put them all together and had a festive holiday centerpiece in minutes that doesn’t break the bank! Here are the items I used:

Plaid Dollar Spot Runner

I grabbed this plaid runner. I love the bright pom poms and the colors worked perfectly with the holiday color scheme I chose for our Cottage Christmas Tree!

Black Iron Candle Holders

These black candle holders are perfect for a modern farmhouse look. The simple design and shape works well with modern decor. They come in black and a galvanized silver metal. I bought three candle holders and placed them evenly on top of the runner.

Berry and Leaves Garland

I cut some branches off of our evergreens in the yard and layered the greens around the candle holders. Then I put a berry and leaves garland from the Dollar Spot over the branches. I love the way the red berries POP against the dark greens.

Fresh Flowers

I love fresh flowers and the circle opening in the middle of the metal candle holders was a perfect spot to add a simple vase. I chose white hydrangeas and little green berries to put in three vases inside of the candle holders. You can also use faux flowers which are easier to use if you want to keep your centerpiece out for the whole holiday season.

Metal Bows

I couldn’t resist these metal bow ornaments. They come in a few different colors and plaid patterns. I think I am going to glue a plain napkin ring on the back of them and use them as napkin rings this holiday season. But for now I placed them along the centerpiece because I thought they were cute and also coordinated with the plaid runner.

Mini Wreaths

Another item I found from the Dollar Spot were these mini wreaths. They are perfect for hanging on the back of a chair. Just add a little ribbon and you’re done!

Farmhouse Kitchen Nook

I love the way the centerpiece looks in our new kitchen nook! I can’t wait to use this centerpiece all season long! If you want to read more about our nook, check out my Holiday Kitchen Shelves post.

Colorful Happy Home Dining Room REVEAL

I am SO happy about today!! Today is my COLORFUL Happy Home Dining Room Reveal! I LOVE color. Color makes me happy and I love finding ways to bring it into our home. I had an epiphany about my life this year and I decided to bring the happy color I love into my life. So when a bunch of amazingly talented bloggers contacted me about doing a room makeover based on color, I was thrilled. This fun project is called “Color Lovers” and everyone is making over one room in their home using COLOR. And TODAY are the room reveals. These companies have BEAUTIFUL home decor items. Minted has amazing art. You can find any style you want and the art is PHENOMENAL. Birch Lane is an affordable shopping destination with classic designs — I am in love with the chairs I picked out. More about those below! And The Mine has thousands of stylish furniture and home decor items – you can find virtually anything you could possibly want on their site. Their selection of rugs is phenomenal.

I based the whole room off of this gorgeous Minted Ivy Limited Edition print.

I love how abstract it is. And the colors are kind of beachy and beautiful. I love the greens, blues, with accents of white and bright pink.

For seating I brought in these beautiful Lennon Scandinavian Side Chairs through Birch Lane. I love their lines and the simple modern look.

I paired the chairs with a gorgeous Basset Dining Bench I found at The Mine.

Then I reupholstered the top with pink and white buffalo check material.

I matched the buffalo check fabric to bright pink table runners I also found through Birch Lane.

The rug is from the Collection Expression Area Rug from The Mine and I love the color combinations in it.

There are so many different shades of blues, greens, aquas and turquoise. I think it pairs perfectly with the Minted print.

Instead of placemats or a table cloth, I used the bright pink runners on the table. Birch Lane also has napkins that match the runners. And I paired the runners with lux gold silverware, also from Birch Lane. I love the way the silverware picks up the light on the table. It’s so pretty!

I also brought in a very simple console table —  Safavieh FOX4220B Fox Manny Console Table from The Mine.

I plan on having LOTS of family dinners in our dining room and I love having a console table to put food on so that there is more room on the dining table. I also love having a lamp as a warm light and it reflects up onto the Minted print at night which is beautiful.

I chose the Barclay Table Lamp from The Mine. I think it is really different and beachy. I love the square lampshade and the gold accents. The inside of the lampshade is foiled gold and it gives off a warm, gorgeous light at night.

Here’s what the room looks like as you enter it from our family room. I think the wood chandelier that I made goes really well with the wood barn doors and along with the colors in the room it gives the room a warm beachy feel. You can see my little succulent garden in the corner. I have managed to keep most of those plants alive so far LOL!

The wire plant stands are available through Birch Lane. I absolutely love them.

I also think they would make fun quirky nightstands too.

Here’s what the room looks like from our front entry. I love that it is one of the first rooms that visitors see when they come into our home. I think it reflects our warm, happy, colorful home!

6 Shelf Styling Tips – Make Shelves that POP!

I miss the open shelves in my 1905 Cottage. It was so fun to display things on them.

I also had a HUGE pantry in that home and I was able to display all of my pretty bowls and containers. Our new home doesn’t have any open shelves in the kitchen, but we do have some beautiful open shelves and a pretty wood ladder on wheels in our dining room. It’s been fun to style those shelves for different seasons since we have lived here.

After I had my #ColorfulHappyHome ephiphany a few weeks ago, I thought it would be nice to incorporate some color into this room. There is a room makeover happening and I will have details on that SOON! But in the meantime I thought I would share a little COLORFUL update on the room, PLUS a few ideas on how to style shelves that are pretty, interesting and can showcase things that you love!

6 Shelf Styling Tips make Shelves that POP! 

1. Keep Things Simple.

Cluttered bookshelves look busy and distracting. So instead of displaying everything you own on your shelves, thoughtfully consider items that you really love. You can always change things out and rotate through your treasures. Also don’t fill up every single bit of your shelves. Leave open space, it will give the eye room to breathe.

2. Stick to a main color scheme.

You know I LOVE color. But stick to 1,2 or three main colors. The overall look will be much calmer. For my shelves, I stuck with a plain white background. I brought in bright pink as my accent color and I have that color in a few places on the shelves.

3. Display collections together.

I put all of my white candlesticks together on one shelf, and all of my cake plates together on another shelf. This makes a big statement and really showcases your collection.

4. Display items at different heights.

For example my candlesticks are all different heights that this creates interest. Another example are the wood patterned trays I have on two of the shelves. I put them on shelves on top of each other to display them together, but I displayed one vertically and one horizontally and this is a little tiny surprising detail.

5. Add natural elements.

I always add something that is alive when styling my shelves. If you have a black thumb like me you can add “faux” foliage as long as it can pass for real LOL! In this room I also have a succulent garden which brings in a beautiful natural element and creates the illusion of the outdoors.

6. Add something metallic.

Something reflective will add a new dimension to the shelves. It also creates the illusion of more light and space. I LOVE mirrors in my home, much more than traditional art. Mirrors are kind of like empty space but they make every space appear lighter and larger. In these shelves I added a couple of mirrored elements. I added a silver shiny serving platter in front of the cake plates on the right shelves. I also displayed some mercury glass votives on a cake plate on the shelf opposite to draw the eye to both sides of the room.

I am still working on these shelves. A few other things I want to do are — bring in more of the hot pink color on the shelves. Another fun idea to switch up the look of shelves is to add color behind the shelves. I did this in the open shelves in my old house. I took cabinet doors off and I cut a piece of plywood to fit behind the shelves and then I wrapped fabric or wallpaper around that piece of plywood to easily change up the background of the shelves. I loved it!

I did this same type of thing in my closets upstairs in this new home. I took pieces of foamboard and wrapped fabric around them and then put them behind the shelves in my closets. It’s the same type of idea and it’s much easier to change out than wallpapering or painting behind your shelves.
