I’m Jen and I’ve been blogging at tatertots and jello for almost 13 years. I love sharing easy ways to make your life easier and more beautiful!!

Hi! Welcome to our home! I love Krista’s #SeasonalSimplicity tour week and look forward to it each year! I am excited to share our boho cottage front porch and entryway. But I also have a few other spaces in our home that I am sharing too! I love this time of year!

Decorating a Vintage Home for the Holidays

This is our second year in our #1891AvenuesCottage home. Last year we hadn’t started our remodel so it was hard to find things to share. This year we are in the middle of the remodel but we have gotten so much accomplished in the past 9 months!

Cottage Holiday Front Porch Decorating

Let’s start with our front porch! I love cottage style – it’s homey, warm and comforting. I like to add a little bit of a bohemian look too! This year I added this with our boho lighted tree, decorating our modern egg chair and our boho porch swing!

Cottage Holiday Egg Chair

I added some red and white pillows, a cozy throw and fresh garland. The fresh garland looks so festive at the top of the chair. I tied it onto the chair with some green pipe cleaners.

Cottage Boho Porch Swing

Our porch swing is one of my favorite things! We love sitting on our porch when it’s warm, but we also have been sitting out there while it’s been chillier. I added a soft faux fur throw and some cozy pillows. It’s the perfect spot to sit with a cup of warm hot cocoa and enjoy our downtown neighborhood!

Boho Wicker Tree

Isn’t this wicker tree so fun? The Wicker tree is from Ikea and loved the simplicity of the design. I think the wicker goes so well with the woods in our egg chair and porch swing. I added lights to the inside of the tree and it sparkles at night!!

Color Changing Porch Lights

We love our color-changing lights. During the holidays I love to set them to “white and red” and they make our house look like a candy cane cottage!!

Cottage Holiday Entryway Decorating

One of the sweetest parts of our 1891 is the little entry room. It’s small but so cute. Our home has very high ceilings and I love the dimensions of this room. I added a little DIY bench I made and hung my @SincerelyUsShop sign over the bench. I added some colorful pillows to the bench and some woven holiday rugs too! Fresh garland adds the finishing touch!

Cottage Holiday Office Decor

I spend most of my days in my office so I wanted to make it festive for Christmas! I decorated my office nook with some fresh greens and a holiday sign.

Decorated Dream Box

I keep my craft supplies in my Create Room DreamBox. It was so fun to add some festivity to the DreamBox. The thing I love about my DreamBox is it looks like fine furniture that fits in with my home. The main part looks like a pretty shelving unit and is so fun to decorate!

I added some bells, ornaments and little trees. It’s so pretty!

1891 Vintage Fireplace Holiday Decor

Last year I redid the original fireplace for under $200. I added peel-and-stick floor tile on the hearth. And on the surround I used black peel and stick tile which camouflaged the fact that the fireplace insert was off-center. I added some simple garlands and white village houses. I love the lights.

Colorful Snowflake Art

DIY Snowflake art adds some BRIGHT art to our family room and ties in with our bright holiday tree. I am going to write up a tutorial on how to make these. They would be fun to leave up all winter.

I also set up our family nativity set, which is so meaningful for the holidays.

Cottage Holiday Dining Room

Plaid is perfect for the holidays. I used my MacKenzie-Childs plaid throws, ornaments, Flower Market serving pieces to add some scottish flare for the holidays.

My favorite item this year is this GORGEOUS MacKenzie-Childs holiday wreath. Look at the details.

This wreath is so magical and charming. I love the way it looks above our dining room table!

We also celebrated my daughter’s birthday last weekend so our holiday dining room has doubled as a festive birthday space which has been fun!

I also added a few touches to this new cabinet we added in our kitchen! I filed the back of the cabinet with cement tile that Mathew our new pantry!

Cottage Holiday Bathroom Touches

I did a little bathroom refresh a couple of weeks on our main floor half bathroom. I painted the walls white and added black board and batten. As a temporary fix I used the same peel-and-stick tile that I used on my mantel hearth and I love the way it turned out! I will share more on that room soon!

Bright and Colorful Holiday Housewalk Tour

Colorful Holiday Ideas

Over the years I have decorated every color palette around for Christmas. I’ve discovered that bright colors are where my heart is. I love the way bright colors fill our home sense of whimsy and joy. This year I figured that we need all the happy colors we can get!!

Merry Christmas Mantel

I created a really easy DIY Merry wreath using some leftover ornaments and an embroidery hoop. I paired it with my favorite colorful bottlebrush trees.

DIY Wood Snowflake Art

A couple of years ago I created some Scandinavian Snowflake Colorful Ornaments and I love them so much that I decided to make a larger version to hang over our couch. The best part about this project is that you can make them as colorful or neutral as you want! Just paint the canvases whatever color works for YOUR home!

Candy Cane Colorful Christmas Tree

One of the first thing that I fell in love with when I walked into our 1891 home for the first time was the spiral staircase! There was the perfect curved place for a tree. I love filling it with a pretty themed tree each year. This year I chose “Candy Cane” for this tree and our kitchen area. I just finished installing the new runner and our kitchen remodel is almost done!

Our kitchen remodel is coming along. I painted our island black and I love the dark neutral background.

Bring Color in with Fresh Greens

I added fresh greens on our open shelves. I also added a wreath on our new planked hood.

Colorful Painted Cookie Jar

I spray painted a white cookie jar my favorite shade of pink and I love the way it pops in the kitchen, It’s the same shade of pink I painted the vintage step stool that’s in our back pantry!

DIY Tiled Vintage Cabinet

One of my favorite projects I tackled this year is the DIY tile backsplash that installed in a beautiful Facebook Marketplace cabinet. I used the same matching tile that we put in the back pantry. I love the way it ties the kitchen and back pantry together. This is where we keep our everyday dishes and glassware. I added a few holiday touches inside!

Can you believe this cabinet was originally a gun cabinet?? I added some plaid MacKenzie-Childs gingham napkins to add some holiday cheer to the cabinet!

Colorful Plaid Dining Area

In our dining area I went with a plaid theme. My mom, sisters and I took a girls’ trip to Scotland last year and the plaid reminds me of our trip!

I used MacKenzie-Childs throws instead of a tablecloth. My 8 quart MacKenzie-Childs stock pot to create a festive floral centerpiece and I love the way the bright floral Flower Market print plays with the plaids. Then I added some simple wreaths to the open shelves there and red and white plaid bows to bring color to the wall.

Holiday Butler’s Pantry

One of my favorite new spaces in our home is our NEW butlers pantry. We are just finishing this space up, but I couldn’t resist adding some bright and colorful items to bring some happiness to this baking section.

I added a colorful wreath, garland and fresh evergreen boughs and I love the way it looks!

Colorful Holiday Laundry Room Decor

Our new laundry room adjoins the pantry and it’s also is almost done! I spent all summer stripping and refinishing some vintage doors that we hung in the wall to separate the space. It was worth the work!

We are still waiting on some back-ordered cabinet pulls and a few other details but we are so excited to have a functioning laundry room!! Bottlebrush trees bring in some happy color. A wreath on top of a vintage ironing board adds holiday cheer!

Bright Colorful Merry Mantel

I love color! A couple of years ago I created a bright and happy holiday mantel and it was one of my favorites. I decided that I wanted to create a similar type of mantel this year!

Colorful Ornament Wreath

I started off with a DIY Colorful Ornament Wreath that I created. I had some leftover bright ornaments. The wreath is super easy to make.

Bright Bottle Brush Trees

I adore these colorful trees. You can find them at Hobby Lobby. I layered them on the mantel.

Merry Wood Art

The center of the mantel has a MERRY wood art sign. I surrounded the MERRY with the bottle brush trees and a felt garland.

Layer Garlands Over the Mantel

To add a little more color I added a couple of garlands over the front of the mantel. One is a wood bead garland with wood trees. The other garland is a colorful felted ball garland.

Bright Pom Pom Stockings

At the edge of the mantel I hung some bright pom pom stockings. I love how colors in the stockings reflect the colors on the mantel.

Bright Falala Tree

My falala tree also has the same bright ornaments. Bright colors are reflected in the tree in bright ornaments, colorful plaid ribbon and scandinavian DIY ornaments.

Farmhouse Wood Bead and Pom Pom Garlands

There’s something magical about pom poms. I love them on everything — drapes, bed-skirts, duvets, clothes and decor! I’ve been making handmade pom poms for years now and they are one of my favorite crafts to make.

Make Any Color Pom Pom to go with Your Decor

The thing I love about making yarn pom poms is you can change the color to match whatever project you are creating. All you need to do is get yarn the color that you want to make your pom poms and in minutes you can have small pom poms like the ones I used to make the tassel on my DIY Picnic Basket, or giant ones like the ones I made for this wood garland project.

Colorful Holiday Pom Poms

Last year I created a bright and colorful holiday mantel and tree. I love the colors! This year I am going to recreate that tree and mantel in my new office at the 1891 avenues cottage.

No Tools are Needed to Create Beautiful Pom Poms

I made a new garland for that bright and colorful tree! Bright pom poms really makes me happy! I don’t use pom pom tools. Instead, I cut a piece of cardboard to the size I want and use trim my pom poms by hand.

Neutral Pom Poms for Farmhouse Decor

Of course you can customize this project with more neutral, white or tan pom poms and it’s a gorgeous addition to your farmhouse decor! Just follow the same directions, and choose a neutral yarn color instead of the colorful colors I chose.

Only Two Supplies to Make Farmhouse Wood Bead and Pom Pom Garland

You only need two supplies to make this project — wood beads and yarn! So easy!

How to Make Handmade Pom Poms

1. Measure how wide you want your pom poms to be. Now double the width of your pom poms and add an inch. Cut a piece of cardboard the to that width. You add an extra inch because you will need that to shape your pom poms. The reason I have you double the width is that you will cut your string in half. This makes it easier – instead of wrapping the cardboard 200 times, you only have to wrap it 100 times since you are cutting it in half.
2. Slide the yarn off of the cardboard. Then cut each end of the yarn.
3. Hold the end of one side of the cut yarn. Cut the entire yarn in half.
4. Lay both cut yarn in a even pile. Then cut a 12-inch piece of yarn and wrap a long piece of yarn around the yarn pile and tie on one side. Flip the wrapped yarn pile over and wrap the yarn around the other side and tie it there too so it’s extra secure.
5. Leave the longer string you used to tie the pom pom. You will use it to tie the pom pom onto the wood bead strand later.
6. Hold the pom pom up and fluff it out. Then start trimming it into a ball shape.
7. Repeat this process. Make as many pom poms as you want for your garland.
8. String the wood beads. You can use either string or twine and tie the ends off.
9. Lay the wood bead strand on a flat surface. Arrange the pom poms where you want them on the strand.
10. Tie each pom pom to the bead strand. Use the long yarn that is still attached to each pom pom to tie them in between the beads at the intervals you decided on the bead strand. I counted out 8 beads and tied my pom poms between every eighth bead, but you can use whatever spacing you want, depending on how big you made your pom poms and what you want your garland to look like.

Enjoy Your New Farmhouse Wood Bead and Pom Pom Garland

You can use your garland to decorate a tree or mantel, or make a few and decorate your banister or a doorway. The ideas are endless!

Farmhouse Christmas Sign Ornaments

I love a Christmas theme! Last year our theme was “Joy to the World”. This year I decided that I love “Fa La La La” from “Deck the Halls” as our theme! And of course I wanted to make some elements that go along with our theme.

I love my giant signs from my friends at Sincerely Us shop. And I thought it would be cool to make some similar, small-size neutral frames with our Fa La La La saying inside.

Hacks to Make Farmhouse Christmas Signs Easier

I found a couple of hacks to make this project easier to create. I found 99-cent unfinished frames at Michaels that work great!

$1 Pre Made Frames

Another thing I found to make this project faster and easier is instead of hand-lettering the words, or using a craft cutting machine, I used thicker letters! Do you know what Thickers are?

Use Thickers for Letters

Thickers are scrapbook letters that are raised and have adhesive on the back. You can get them in any font. These Thickers are from my Pebbles This is Family line, and Pebbles new Merry Little Christmas line now at JoAnn stores!

You only need a few supplies to make these frames:

Unfinished wood frames

Paint for the inside of the frame

Stain

Thicker Letters (Merry Little Christmas Thickers, Jen Hadfield This Is Family Thickers)

Ribbon (if you want to hang them)

How to Make Farmhouse Wood Frame Ornaments

1. Paint the inside of your frames (let dry)
2. Stain the outside of the frames, front and back. A tip about staining the frames, I put some stain in a cup and added about 5x more water than stain. This diluted the stain and made it easier to apply. I brushed it on with a craft paint brush.
3. Apply the Thicker letters.
4. Add a loop of ribbon to the back and hot glue it in place. I just placed my frames in my tree and had the branches hold the frames in place. So adding the ribbon is optional.

Farmhouse Wood Frame Ornaments Make Great Gifts

These ornaments are big enough that you can give them as a gift too! The frames stand up by themselves and can be used as stand-alone Christmas decor. Plus, you can add whatever saying you want, so you can make these as Christmas gifts that people can use all year long!

Today I’m sharing a super simple and quick Christmas craft that you can use to decorate for Christmas.  It’s DIY white Christmas trees…farmhouse style!

DIY White Farmhouse Christmas Trees 

I really love farmhouse style decor.  It keeps to a simple color scheme–very neutral with pops of color found in nature like red, green, blue, brown, etc.  Elements I used for these trees are faux fur, braided cord, chenille fabric, and button ribbon.

I found all of these at Hobby Lobby but you can also find some of them in the links below for your convenience (affiliate links) or you can find most of these things at any craft store.

Supplies:

• Faux fur ribbon
• Braided cord (white)
• Braided cord (hemp color)
• Chenille fabric
• Button ribbon
• Cardboard tree forms
• Hot glue

For the “fur” tree you start by cutting your fur ribbon at an angle and making sure that the nap of the fur is pointing down, wrap the fur around the tree form, securing in place with hot glue.  Don’t burn yourself like I did!  It won’t wrap all the way around and sit flat, so you will have to do it in sections.  Just make sure you start all the pieces in the same place and that can be at the back.  Since it’s furry and wrapped with the cord you really won’t notice it after it’s finished anyway.

After the entire form is covered in the fur and you’ve trimmed off the bottom, wrap the white cord first, going up to the point and then back down, making a criss-cross pattern.

Repeat with the hemp color if you want.  I only had enough to go around once time.  I wanted to use the hemp color to tie in the button tree so they’d look like they went together.  I secured the ends of the cord with more glue.

For the button tree, cut a piece of fabric in a triangular shape.  Wrap the fabric around the form and trim to size.  I opted to have the soft fuzzy part on the inside so I could see the lines.

Glue in place and trim.

Wrap the tree with the button ribbon and secure with more hot glue.  And you’re done!

DIY White Farmhouse Christmas Trees
