<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don&#8217;t you love Spring? I always get so excited to plant flowers and get my yard ready for outdoor entertaining! When my kids were little I remember taking an old chair, spray painting it yellow and planting flowers in it. So over the weekend when my husband and I were out on our early morning Saturday, walk and I came across an old chair abandoned on a street corner, I knew what I wanted to do! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An old chair can become the perfect upcycled planter. There are a few ways to turn an old chair into a planter. I am going to share two ways to turn an old chair into a delightful flower planter. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Chair Planter with No Pot </h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-pin-title="yellow planter chair " data-pin-description="How to upcycle an old chair into a charming yard planter. " src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/yellow-planter-chair-.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-106764" width="402" height="720" srcset="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/yellow-planter-chair-.jpeg 402w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/yellow-planter-chair--168x300.jpeg 168w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/yellow-planter-chair--84x150.jpeg 84w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/yellow-planter-chair--150x269.jpeg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">(source unknown)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the way I made a chair into a planter about 20 years ago. You don&#8217;t need a pot to use this method. This is a great upcycle if you have a chair with a seat that is broken or missing. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">No Pot Chair Planter Supplies: </h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>old chair with no seat </li><li>chicken wire or screen door material </li><li>coco liner material </li><li>garden dirt </li><li>flowers </li><li>Staple Gun </li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="375" height="640" data-pin-title="planted garden chair " data-pin-description="planted garden chair " src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/planted-chair-.jpeg" alt="planted garden chair " class="wp-image-106765" srcset="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/planted-chair-.jpeg 375w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/planted-chair--176x300.jpeg 176w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/planted-chair--88x150.jpeg 88w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/planted-chair--150x256.jpeg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How to Make a Chair Planter with No Pot </h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Cut a large length of window screen or chicken wire and staple it onto the top edges of the chair cavity, leave enough in the middle so it creates a cavity in the middle of the open chair seat. </li><li>Line the chicken wire or window screen material with coir/coco liner.</li><li>Fill cavity 3/4 way full with garden soil. </li><li>Plant flowers in the cavity. </li><li>Fill in holes between flowers with garden soil.</li><li>Enjoy your planter! </li></ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Make a Chair Planter with a Pot </h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="1333" data-pin-title="Broken Chair to Beautiful Flower Planter " data-pin-description="Spring DIY Upcycled Chair Planter. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">I find this to be an easier way but it might not be as charming? What do you think? The chair that I found on the side of the road was originally a &#8220;commode chair&#8221; so it already had a hole cut out fo a container. I also love that it has a large apron that conceals the bowl. It&#8217;s perfect for a planter! But you don&#8217;t need this type of chair to make this planter. Any chair with a removable seat will work! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here is how you can transform an old chair into a cute planter in minutes! </p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Take the seat off your chair. Or, if your seat is hard to remove, but a hole in the middle of the seat. Measure your pot and cut the hole to be smaller than the widest point of the pot. </li><li>Paint your chair (optional). I painted my chair to give it more strength against the elements but you can also leave the bare wood of your chair or give it a coat of polyurethane to protect it. I used a ultra-bonding primer first and then put a chalk spray paint over the top.</li><li>If you didn&#8217;t cut a hole in the seat, you will want to add some pieces of wood around the base of the chair to hold your pot edges. I used a couple pieces of the wood from the seat and nailed them on both sides of the seat so that the pot could rest on them. </li><li>Add garden soil to your pot and plant your flowers. </li><li>Put the pot in the cavity of your chair. </li><li>Enjoy your adorable chair planter! </li></ul>

<p>I recently posted some <a href="https://tatertotsandjello.com/2014/02/home-decor-trends-2014-radiant-orchid.html"><strong>home decor ideas using Radiant Orchid</strong></a>. When I originally saw the color of the year, I didn&#8217;t think I could incorporate it into my home&#8217;s decor. It seemed a little too vibrant. But after doing some research I thought it might work. Especially for Spring. And I loved the idea of incorporating the bright purple color with the soothing color of succulents. The greens against the contrast of the purple seemed so pretty to me. <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-60283 aligncenter" alt="orchid succulent diy planter at tatertots and jello" src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/orchid-succulent-diy-planter-at-tatertots-and-jello.jpg" width="650" height="870" srcset="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/orchid-succulent-diy-planter-at-tatertots-and-jello.jpg 650w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/orchid-succulent-diy-planter-at-tatertots-and-jello-224x300.jpg 224w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/orchid-succulent-diy-planter-at-tatertots-and-jello-112x150.jpg 112w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/orchid-succulent-diy-planter-at-tatertots-and-jello-640x857.jpg 640w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/orchid-succulent-diy-planter-at-tatertots-and-jello-150x201.jpg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /> So I thought it would be fun to make a DIY wooden succulent planter and paint it Radiant Orchid. <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-60287 aligncenter" alt="valspar.paint.sample.raidant.orchid" src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/valspar.paint_.sample.raidant.orchid.jpg" width="378" height="378" srcset="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/valspar.paint_.sample.raidant.orchid.jpg 900w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/valspar.paint_.sample.raidant.orchid-150x150.jpg 150w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/valspar.paint_.sample.raidant.orchid-300x300.jpg 300w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/valspar.paint_.sample.raidant.orchid-90x90.jpg 90w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/valspar.paint_.sample.raidant.orchid-120x120.jpg 120w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px" />   Here&#8217;s how simple it is to make: <span id="more-60260"></span> You&#8217;ll need:</p>
<ul>
<li>3 of the 3/8 x 6 x 36 craft wood pieces &#8212; in my Lowe&#8217;s, they&#8217;re stored horizontally underneath the molding. Be sure to choose nice, straight pieces. (See left image below)</li>
<li>1 package of #6 x 3/4&#8243; &#8220;Pro Crafter&#8221; screws (See center image below)</li>
<li>Saw, drill and screwdriver</li>
<li>Sander</li>
<li>Wood fill if you want to fill in the screw holes</li>
<li>Paint (you can buy little samples of the Valspar Pantone Orchid color of the year, perfect for this project)</li>
</ul>
<p>Note: you could do this project with small nails to attach the wood. However, I first tried using nails to attach the wood and I found that it was even easier to split the wood with nails and they didn&#8217;t feel secure, so I used the screws. You may also consider using wood glue on each joint. <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-60264" alt="1supplies.and.ends" src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1supplies.and_.ends_.jpg" width="600" height="200" srcset="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1supplies.and_.ends_.jpg 600w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1supplies.and_.ends_-150x50.jpg 150w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/1supplies.and_.ends_-300x100.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /> 1. Use your saw to carefully line up all three pieces of wood and trim off one end &#8212; removing the rough, mill-cut end. (See the right picture above) <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-60266" alt="measure.cut.mark" src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/measure.cut_.mark_.jpg" width="600" height="200" srcset="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/measure.cut_.mark_.jpg 600w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/measure.cut_.mark_-150x50.jpg 150w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/measure.cut_.mark_-300x100.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /> 2. Measure 24&#8243; &#8212; or however long you want your planter to be &#8212; and mark it on the wood. (See picture at left above) <br class="none" />3. Cut the boards to the 24&#8243; length: I cut all three pieces at once. (See picture in the center above.) <br class="none" />4. Lay one of the boards perpendicular on the sides of two of the others and mark a board&#8217;s width light pencil mark along three sides &#8212; the two shorter sides (ends) and one of the long ends. (See right picture above.) Why? You&#8217;re going to make drill marks, so you need to know where to make those marks so they&#8217;ll go into the adjacent boards, like this: <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-60269" alt="mark.it" src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/mark.it_.jpg" width="600" height="200" srcset="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/mark.it_.jpg 600w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/mark.it_-150x50.jpg 150w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/mark.it_-300x100.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /> You can measure them so they&#8217;re consistent, or just guess well. Make these marks on each end and along the bottom. I did three on each end and about five along the bottom. You are only marking two boards and leaving one unmarked. <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-60265" alt="drill.chamfer.sides" src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/drill.chamfer.sides_.jpg" width="600" height="200" srcset="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/drill.chamfer.sides_.jpg 600w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/drill.chamfer.sides_-150x50.jpg 150w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/drill.chamfer.sides_-300x100.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /> 5. Now, use a small drill bit &#8212; I used a 1/8&#8243; one &#8212; to drill through the boards in each place you marked. You are only drilling two of the three boards. <br class="none" />6. Use a chamfer bit or a larger drill bit and good judgment to drill a hole to countersink the heads. I didn&#8217;t have my chamfer bit handy so I used a 1/4&#8243; drill bit to make a space for the screw heads to sink into the wood. Be sure to drill the countersink/chamfer holes on the opposite side of where you made the pencil marks on the two boards &#8212; then the pencil marks will be on the inside of your box. <br class="none" />7. Line up the two boards and the bottom board &#8212; the one you left unmarked and undrilled &#8212; and screw them together loosely. <br class="none" />8. Now, measure the remaining ends &#8212; they should be the same measurement, but they may be slightly different if your boards are not perfectly straight &#8212; and cut two end pieces from the wood remaining. <br class="none" />9. Slide the end pieces in and screw them on (see right image above). <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-60267" alt="screw.split.finish" src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/screw.split_.finish.jpg" width="600" height="200" srcset="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/screw.split_.finish.jpg 600w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/screw.split_.finish-150x50.jpg 150w, https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/screw.split_.finish-300x100.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /> 10. Tighten all screws and you&#8217;re done! Tip: Be careful putting in the screws. Because your screws are so close to the ends and sides of this wood, it&#8217;s easy to split the wood (see center image above). That&#8217;s why we pre-drilled both the screw holes and the countersink/chamfer holes. <br class="none" />11. Now you can use wood filler to cover the screw holes if you like, and paint it whatever color you like! I used Pantone&#8217;s Radiant Orchid for my planter. I sanded down the edges and added a little stain too. <br class="none" />12. And to make sure the wood didn&#8217;t get damaged by water, I kept the succulents in their pots and lined the bottom of the planter with a plastic garbage bag to keep water off of the wood. I camouflaged the pots by adding a layer of moss on top of the planter. <strong><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter" alt="diy succulent planter orchid at tatertots and jello" src="https://tatertotsandjello.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/diy-succulent-planter-orchid-at-tatertots-and-jello.jpg" width="650" height="718" /></strong></p>
