DIY Gingerbread Christmas Wreath

I love decorating our home for Christmas. Each year, I choose a different Christmas theme, and this year I picked a whimsical gingerbread theme! So when Hobby Lobby contacted me about coming up with a DIY Christmas wreath, I was so excited to create something special. I headed to my local Hobby Lobby, where I had the BEST time exploring all the Christmas aisles. And guess what? Right now, all of Hobby Lobby’s Christmas Department is 50% off!

Let me show you how I created this adorable Gingerbread Christmas Wreath that’s perfect for adding a little sweetness to your holiday decor.

Gingerbread Christmas Wreath Supplies

I found everything for this wreath at Hobby Lobby, making it so convenient to bring my gingerbread vision to life! Here’s what you’ll need and where to find each item your Hobby Lobby store:

25-Inch Norfolk Pine Wreath
I picked up the most realistic evergreen wreath in the Christmas section. The lush, bouncy tips are perfect for creating a festive base.

Gingerbread-Person-Shaped Cutting Board
This adorable cutting board caught my eye in the kitchen Christmas decor aisle. It’s the perfect whimsical centerpiece for this wreath.

Krylon Decor Selects Satin Brown Boots Spray Paint
You’ll find a wide variety of spray paints, including the perfect gingerbread-inspired shade, in the craft supplies section.

Unfinished Wood Snowflakes
These wood ornaments came from the Christmas crafts aisle. They’re easy to customize and make adorable gingerbread “cookies.”

Ribbon Bundle
I fell in love with the ribbon bundles in the ribbon and fabric section. The colors and textures—like rickrack and cording—are perfect for a gingerbread theme.

Small Pearl Buttons
These tiny pearl buttons were in the sewing section and add the sweetest detail to the gingerbread centerpiece.

Other Supplies
Don’t forget your essentials, like a glue gun, glue sticks (or E6000 glue for a stronger hold), and evergreen pipe cleaners, all of which you can also find in the craft supplies section.

Supplies You’ll Need to Make a Tis Gingerbread Wreath

Here’s everything I used for this project:

Main Supplies:

• 25-inch Norfolk pine wreath
• Gingerbread-person-shaped cutting board
• Krylon spray paint
• One pack of unfinished wood snowflakes
• Ribbon bundle
• Small pearl buttons

Other Supplies:

• Glue gun and glue sticks (or E6000 glue)
• Evergreen pipe cleaners (optional) If you don’t want to use the pipe cleaners to tie the cutting board onto the wreath, you can also hot glue or use E6000 to glue the cutting board to the wreath.

Preparing the Gingerbread Cookies

The first step in creating this wreath is transforming the wood snowflakes into adorable gingerbread cookies. I used two coats of spray paint on one side of the ornaments, let them dry, and then flipped them over to paint the backs.

Once the snowflakes were completely dry, I used paint pens to draw fun snowflake embellishments.

I created two different designs and painted three snowflakes in each pattern. They turned out so cute—like little cookies fresh out of the oven!

Attaching the Gingerbread Centerpiece

To attach the gingerbread-person cutting board, I first wrapped the twinkle lights around the wreath, making sure they were evenly distributed. I secured the battery pack to the back of the wreath using an evergreen pipe cleaner. It’s easy to tuck the battery pack out of sight this way.

Then, I attached the cutting board to the center of the wreath. I used pipe cleaners on the back of the arms and legs, securing them tightly to the wreath’s wire frame. If you prefer a stronger hold, you can use E6000 glue, but keep in mind it takes 24 hours to set completely.

Adding Sweet Details

What’s a gingerbread person without buttons? I used wire cutters to remove the backs of some pearl buttons, then glued them down the center of the cutting board. These little details make the wreath feel extra special. Next, I hot-glued the snowflake “cookies” onto the evergreen wreath. I arranged them evenly around the greenery for a balanced look.

Finishing Touches with Ribbon

The final step was adding the ribbons. From the ribbon bundle, I chose about 12 pieces in different colors and textures. I tied each piece into a small knot and attached them to the bottom of the wreath for a playful, whimsical effect.

With the ribbons in place, I flipped the switch on the twinkle lights and hung the wreath in our gingerbread-themed kitchen. It adds the perfect amount of holiday cheer!

Make an Adorable DIY Playhouse Out of a Box!

Creating a cozy and cute playhouse out of a cardboard box is a fantastic way to recycle and provide a fun space for your furry friend. But why stop at just dogs? This adorable DIY project can be easily adapted to create a playful hideout for kids, cats, or dogs!

Cardboard Playhouse Tips:

• For Kids: Consider adding fairy lights or glow-in-the-dark stickers to make it a magical play space. You can also include small shelves or pockets inside the box for storing toys or books.
• For Cats: Add some scratching posts or dangling toys to keep them entertained.
• For Dogs: Incorporate chew toys or treat-dispensing toys to make the playhouse even more enticing.

Upcycle a Cardboard Box into a Playhouse

We decided to make a little playhouse for our pets! My daughter sketched out the house first. She made it big enough that our dog or cats crate can fit inside. Hannah also made the house have an open bottom so we can easily put it over the crate when they sleep inside, but we can lift it off and out pillows inside for when they’re awake so she can go in and out of the house. We also put two windows on the side of the house so the inside would get plenty of ventilation.

How to Make a Cardboard Playhouse out of a Box

Supplies:

Cardboard Box

Box Cutter and/or Xacto Knife

Packing Tape or Duct Tape

Pencil

Ruler

Cutting Mat or Cutting Board

Paint (optional)

Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun

Sketch Out Your Playhouse

Make a sketch of the house. Figure out what size you want it to have and what features. We added a doors, windows and a little mailbox to ours.

Find a Large Box

We asked around and found a neighbor with a large wardrobe box.

Cut the Box Flat

Cut one side of the box so you can lay it flat. Flip it over so the side without words (if your box has any) is facing up.

Draw the Windows and Doors

Use a ruler and pencil, draw your windows and door or any open areas you want to cut out on the cardboard.

Cut the Openings

Put the cutting mat or cutting board under the areas that you intend to cut — windows and doors. Cut out the openings. You can leave the left side of the door attached and fold the door so it opens. We decided to cut the door completely out. We added hinges to make the door sturdier.

Reattach The Cut Side

Use hot glue or duct tape to attach the cut edge of the box together INSIDE OUT. You want the inside of the box outside, with the words or logos from the box inside.

Make the Roof Peaks

Mark the center on the box’s front side flap. Use a ruler to draw a line from the edge of that flap to the center of the flap and another back to the other side – creating a peak. Do this on both sides of the box.

Glue the flat sides to the peaks. Glue each side of the flat box tops to the sides of the peak. The flat flaps will not meet at the top of the peak, there will be a gap at the top — that is ok!

Measure the Roof

Measure the width of the box and half of the roof from the peak down to the edge of the box. Add about 6 inches to the width + length so you have an overlap. Make two of these dimensions for each side of the roof. You might need to use another box for the roof.

Glue the Roof to the Playhouse

Hot glue the roof onto the house. We reinforced our roof with flat 2 inch lengths of cardboard because the box we were using didn’t have a flat surface that was big enough and it had a bend in it. So to make the roof straight we had to lay that folded side on something straight.

Attach the Door

If you decided not to fold your door and cut it all the way out like we did, you will need to attach the door. We took two rectangular pieces of cardboard about 6″ x 8″ and folded them in half to make a 6″ long by 4″ piece of folded cardboard. Fold the cardboard and then hot glue one side to the door, the other to the edge of the doorway, creating hinges.

Embellish Your Playhouse

We painted polka dots on our house. Then we added pom poms along the roof and the mailbox. And we added “thicker” scrapbook letters to the mailbox that say PUPPY MAIL. And also a Welcome above the door. Then we put pillows inside for the dogs!

Let Your Kids or Pets Enjoy Their Playhouse

It was so funny! Our puppy immediately went inside the house and made it her home. It’s so cute in our family room. And the nice thing is that it’s really lightweight and we can take it upstairs so we can use it with her crate too!

Good Witch Tea Party!

I know I’ve mentioned before that I love the {Happy} side of Halloween.

I’m sharing this oldie but goodie today. I am updating it because I still think it is a great party to throw for your kids! Make spooky treats, create a witch umbrella to hang on your porch or inside and celebrate the sweet side of Halloween!

Good Witch Tea Party

I had such a fun time creating this little party for my girls and their friends. I had each of the kids come dressed up as a witch. They loved getting into the theme of the party!

Create Witch Hats Centerpiece and Place Cards

We spent the week before the party making the decorations! A witch hat centerpiece and little hat place cards! We also made paper cone party favors filled with treats that hung on the back of each chair.

Make Spooky Food

Activities at a Witch Tea Party

We welcomed the little witches and had them decorate cookies!

Make a Hanging Witch to Welcome Guests

It’s so easy to make this hanging witch skirt! You start with an umbrella. Then hot glue black feather boas around the edge of the umbrella. Fill stockings with bathroom tissue wadded up and tie the stockings to the umbrella spokes. Add tulle around the stockings. I added Halloween socks on top of the stockings. Then either make shoes out of black felt or tie real shoes onto the stockings! So cute!!

Decorate Your Party Table

We put the party food on a built-in cabinet. I already had a picture of the kids hanging there. I cut out little witch hats, masks and a moustache out of black paper and put them on the picture to spookify it a little. Then I added a black wreath and a little paper banner to the nook.

We even Spookified the pictures in our little Family Picture Nook for the occasion!!

And we made some Festive Halloween toothpick Flags and Treat Toppers:

My Favorite Light Fixtures & Chandeliers

I’ve had so many questions about where I found my light fixtures at the #1891AvenuesCottage, I’m sharing all of my sources here!

One of my favorite projects I shared from our last house was this pretty easy DIY Wood Chandelier Tutorial. I love how the simple wood look fits into just about any room–beachy, farmhouse, you name it!

One of my favorite recent discoveries has been these Hood Classic Pendant Lights from Rejuvenation.

You can customize the finish to fit into your home perfectly–mine are finished with black enamel.

The chandelier I’ve found for my living room is this Bubbles Brass Ring Pendant Light from CB2.

It’s neutral enough to complement any room perfectly while still injecting a ton of personality, I love it!

If you’ve been following me since 2013 you might remember this tutorial for a DIY Orb Chandelier. It turns out making your own light fixtures is much easier than it seems!

This Swoop Arm Chandelier from West Elm is tying my dining room together so well lately!

I love the soft glow from the different light sources, it’s perfect for (not-so) quiet dinners with my family.

As a little teaser for my upcoming pantry and laundry room reveal, I’m going to be using these adorable Antique Industrial Sconces from Amazon for the lighting and I’m so excited about them!

For the laundry room side of the room I’ve installed these Black Finish Industrial Wall Lights from Amazon (on sale for 2 for $75 right now). This isn’t a picture from my house, but you’ll see them soon enough!

S’mores Party Ideas

You all shared so many unique and amazing ideas for S’mores Parties this week, I had to share some of my favorites!

At this point you probably all know that I can’t resist a charcuterie board. This week I’m obsessed with this S’mores Charcuterie Board from Jenny Cookies on Instagram.

I also love the idea of changing up the temperature of s’mores with these Frozen S’mores Cookie Bars over at Grandbaby Cakes. Jocelyn made them so beautiful, too… I’m so jealous of her creativity!

Sometimes there’s no beating the classics. Melissa from Best Friends for Frosting shared this classic S’mores Party she threw with her family this week, and I can’t resist throwing one of my own soon!

My fabulous sister Ashley over at Modern Glam shared this mouthwatering S’mores Dessert Board and party she threw with her adorable kids. Over on her page she shared some tips for mixing up the classic S’mores concept with Nutella, peppermint, caramel apple, and other recipes!

I’m obsessed with the bold colors and patterns of Melissa’s latest downloadable fabric design for Nesting Polka Dot Baskets! Her designs are always so simple to replicate, so cute in the home, and (maybe most importantly) actually useful to store things in!

Another project I loved this week was the Amy from Ameroonie’s Rainbow Village and Mini Rainbow Quilt. You have to check out these two absolutely amazing projects that can add pops of color in your house using some of the cutest fabrics I’ve ever seen.

Happy Monday! I have some really fun news and a CUTE embroidery hoop tutorial today. You can make so may creative projects with embroidery hoops. My daughter loves stitching words and images on hers. I added some gorgeous bright paper flowers to the edges and I love the way it looks!

Last week I shared a Farmhouse Magnolia Embroidery Hoop Wreath. It was SO easy to make and only took a few minutes too!

This is a welcome embroidery hoop wall hanging.

It would be so cute to hang on a gallery wall! And the fun thing is you can use ANY word. Use your last name. Stitch your word of the year. Or a saying even! The possibilities are endless! You could also make a larger version of this embroidery hoop wall hanging and hang it on your front door. I did this with the Sun Shine Embroidery Hoop Wall Hanging I made earlier this spring.

Here’s how to make an Embroidery Hoop Welcome Wall Hanging

Supplies:

Embroidery hoop

Fabric

Embroidery floss – pink and blue are what I used

Pom poms

Wire

Paper (I used paper from my new My Bright Life line)

Felt

Hot glue and gun

1. Using pink embroidery floss, slip stitch around the inside of the hoop.
2. Using navy embroidery floss, backstitch the word welcome. To put the word WELCOME on your fabric, type your word on your computer with the font you want. Print it in the size you want. Then hold the paper up to a window with the fabric over the top and trace the word on your fabric with a pencil.
3. Glue on pom pom stamins. Glue on flowers. Glue on leaves. 
4. Trim the remaining fabric 1 1/2 inches away from the hoop. Using a slip stitch around the fabric. Pull tight to secure the fabric on the back of the hoop. Secure in place with a knot. 
5. Hot glue or stitch the felt circle onto the back of the hoop. You’re all finished.

Then hang up your creation! I love seeing mine on my mantel!

How to make felt flower hair clips. Kids will love making these felt flowers. They are a great kids craft or party craft idea! 

Kids Felt Flowers Hair Clips

One of favorite shows right now is Sunny Day. Have you seen it? It’s a super cute and upbeat animated series on Nickelodeon. The main character Sunny is 10-years old, which is the same age as my step-daughter. Sunny is a master hairstylist and salon owner. With her friends Rox and Blair Sunny saves the day, all the while being fabulous — one hair style at a time LOL! I love that her character is so strong and positive. She is a strong girl character who owns her own business and solves problems while supporting her friends. One of the main phrases from the show is “Keep Smiling, Keep Styling” and “Have a Sunny Day!”. SO cute! Watch Sunny Day Weekdays on Nickelodeon!

So when Nickelodeon reached out to see if I liked the show and would come up with a fun kids craft based on the show, we were excited to brainstorm. We love Sunny’s BFF Blair – she is such a sweet character. Her lavender hair is so pretty and she always sports rose hair clips. We thought it might be fun to try to make Blair’s Rose Hair Clips. Kids Felt Flowers Hair Clips

Kids Felt Flower Hair Clips Tutorial

Kids Felt Flowers Hair Clips

Supplies:

Felt sheets (you can find them at your craft store)

Hot glue and glue gun

Hair Clips (also found at the craft store)

Directions:

Kids Felt Flowers Hair Clips

1.Cut felt sheet in half.

You can use half of the sheet to make one rose and half of the other to make the smaller rose.

2. Cut both squares into a circle.

You will be left with a quarter of the felt sheet which you can use to make another rose or cut up for the backing of the hair clips.

3. Cut the circle in a spiral until you get to the center and then make a circle at the bottom.

4. Roll the felt up from the outside in.

When you get to the circle in the center, lay the rolled up felt on top of the circle and hot glue it so that the circle felt is at the bottom holding the flower in place.

5. Once you have done this for the big and small flower, hot glue both onto a rectangular strip of felt.

6. Then hot glue a clip onto the bottom of the flowers.

Then just enjoy your clips! This is a fun kids craft to do with friends. Or a great party craft too! Throw a Sunny Day party — have a nail polish station, make felt flower clips and have a hair station then watch some of the show. Your kids will love it!
